Student Scholarships

Thanks are in order to the Jacobsen Company for providing new scholarship opportuni-ties for students. Nick Pennella, Kayle Fullforth, and Steven Slaughter were awarded $500 scholarships each.

The Delhi Turf Club, are off to a busy start! Thus far the club has set goals for the year, which consists of attending both the NY State Turf and Grounds Exposition in Rochester, NY and the GCSAA Tradeshow & Conference in Orlando, FL. to compete in the Turf Bowl competition they each host. The club has also taken a few local trips to see different layout styles of golf courses, participated in the college’s Community Service Day and Open House, as well as set up fundraisers such as raking leaves and selling chocolate bars to help attain these goals.

This year’s Horticulture Club members have a lot of energy and hope to accomplish many good things to

further their learning. Already the club has started weekly mini-informational sessions where club mem-

bers share knowledge with each other. Our first learning session covered the plant: Atropa belladonna,

commonly known as Deadly Nightshade or Belladonna. The club is also pursuing a project in which they

will create a display of antique horticulture and landscape design books. This collection will be placed in a

special case located in the library. To round off the semesters’ education theme, the club is also planning

a fall trip with guided tour of Longwood Gardens and a professional presentation on the art of bonsai.

For the official Community Service Day, the club cleaned out shrub and perennial beds around Farnsworth

Hall – what a difference a little clean-up can make! A fund raiser of selling spring flowering bulbs is just

coming to a close. Proceeds will be going to the annual PLANET Student Career Days which is planned for

Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado! It seems just like yesterday that we were there, but

that was in 2001 - wow!

Student interns had their hand in working the Men’s and Women’s US Open, PGA Championships, Bar-clay’s and Deutsche Bank tournaments of the FedEx Playoffs, Walker Cup, and several PGA and Web.com tour events. Superb weather for this year’s garden tour

field trip made a wonderful experience unfor-

gettable. The Planting Design class with pro-

fessor, Birgitta Brophy, ventured to the typi-

cal sites but added yet another stop to round

out the day. The students were introduced to

three very different garden styles: the Asian

influenced “Cup Garden” at Innesfree, the

Italian Renaissance inspired garden at Weth-

ersfield and lastly a picturesque garden design

guided by Andrew Jackson Downing at Mont-

gomery Place. A truly enjoyable time was had

by all.

For projects this fall, the Planting Design class

is designing residential landscapes for several

campus faculty and staff in the community.

Being able to survey properties, meet clients,

develop schematic designs and present a final

design solution has been and remains to be an

invaluable learning tool. We look forward to

this year’s projects!

GOLF & PLANT SCIENCES

Kathy Gillooley and Julia Ward plant cen-

tennial tree’s with the Introduction to

Horticulture Class.

With Julia Ward’s efforts, along with CADI, the Turf Club and the student

senate we were able to purchase a tower Hydroponic/Aeroponic gardening

system , in an effort to promote the Farm to Table program here at SUNY

Delhi. The system is a no weeding, no tilling, kneeling or getting dirty, just

plug and play vertical garden system. The hope is to grow different vegeta-

bles to be used by the Culinary students and/or CADI, as well as introduce a

newer Hydroponic technology to our students.
