300 M I LLI ON EUROPEANS AWARE OF CANUCK SCENE Maple M usic I nc. recently unde rtoo k a special study of the aftermath of the recent Maple M usic J un ket and have come up with an amazing revelation that the total potential audience (reader and listener) reach of the MMJ guests was 290,61 6,000. The 92 jun keteers contribute to hundreds of newspapers and magazines as wel l as several broadcast networks, inc l uding the giant BBC world-wide service.

Reporters/co lumnists were present from news papers representing the largest circu lation in the world . These inc luded: England 's News of the World (18 mil lion ) The Daily Mirror (1 4 mil lion ) ; and The Sun ( 1 0 mil l ion ) .

The Maple M usic J u nket, w hich received a grant of $ 35,000 from the Federal Government, contributions from CAPAC and BM I Canada Ltd., the two Canadian performance rights societies and the bu l k o f the monies from t h e Canadian Recording Manufacturers' Association (more than $70,000) flew the European media guests to Canada on a specia l ly chartered aircraft for a sampling of ,Canada's best in folk , midd le of the road, cou ntry and music of today recording u nits. Concerts took place in Montreal and Toronto between J une 2 and 8 .

The j unketeers, who apparently infl uence the opinions of more than 300 mil lion Europeans on a regu lar basis, were hand picked from 1 5 nations. These included the U.K., F rance , Germany, Spain , Switzerland , Australia, I taly, The Netherlands, Belgiu m, Den mark, Sweden, Norway, and Fin land .

GALT MacDERMOT LECTURES AT MacMillAN THEATRE Galt Mac Dermot, composer of the music for "Hair" and "Two Gentlemen Of Verona" was chosen to be th is year's CAPAC lectu er for the Lecture and Recital Series for 1 972 , sponsored by The Summer School of

, the Royal Conservatory of Music. MacDermot's first date at the MacMillan Theatre (j u ly 27 ) of the Edward J oh nson Building of the University of Toronto consisted of a live performance of excerpts from his two musicals as wel l as from a new work he is currently putting together. Performing artists for this session include d : Salome Bey; d ru m mer, Bernard Purdie ; Gordon Edwards, bass; and guitarist Bil ly Nichols.

The second evening (28 ) consisted of a short lecture and a q uestion and answer period on music and theatre.

CAPAC's J an Matejcek hosted an informal get together after the Thursday lectu re at Zeev's Tavern and a special press conference the fol lowing evening in the French Room of the Par k Plaza Hotel.

The MacMil lan Lectu res were established in 1 963 and are sponsored by the Composers, Authors and Publishers Association of Canada (CAPAC) and were named in honour of CAPAC's long standing Presiden t, Sir Ernest MacMil lan.

The Lectu res were instituted in collabora-

One guest, Stefan Liban, came from So pot Poland.

Prior to the J unket, Canadian music was thought to be part of "A merica". Even the Guess Who were regarded as Americans. Since the retu rn of the M M J guests, press and radio mentions have brought Canadian music to the forefront. Stampeders' manager, Mel Shaw, received so many req uests for his grou p that he en planed for Europe (j u ly 19 ) for tal ks with promoters , boo kers and record execs throughout Europe. A date at the Oly mpia in Paris has already been tentative ly set. Anne Murray, a lready an estab lished name in the UK and Europe, returns to England and an E M I sponsored tour of the major centres.

The Canadian Govern ment Travel Bureau, who have restricted their "sounding off" to historical and mu ndane Canadian attractions i.e. The Rockies, Calgary Stam pede, Toronto Fair etc. ) have now recognized the potential of the Canadian music industry. They have arranged to send Canadian posters to each of the jou rnalists and broadcasters who came to Canada.

F uture events to capitalize on the Maple Music J u nket, which actual ly re presented the largest gathering of foreign press on Canadian soil in our history, have been u nderway between the Board of Directors of Maple Music I n c. and Federal officials. There are no definite plans, at time of writing, but one spokesman noted : "There isn 't much q uestion about whether we wil l continue to promote Canadian music to the world as a u nited ind ustry - the only questions are exactly which ways it wil l be done."

tion with the Summer School of the University of Toronto - Royal Conservatory of M usic and al low a leading figure in the world of art with a p latform from which he can express his views of music or musical life. Tickets for the series, which ru n from J u ly 1 0 to August 3 are free an d are available from the Royal Conservatory of M usic.

MORNING MUSIC'S KRYTIUK CONCLUDES SEVERAL DEALS J ury Krytiu k of Morning M usic Toronto has concluded several deals re cently one with Clyde Otis of Eden Music Corp and Prentice M usic Corp. of Englewood, N . J .

This agreement gives Morning Music the right to represent Prentice and Eden in Canada and the West I ndies and covers more than 1 600 com positions incl uding standards : " I t's J ust a Matter of Time", "The Bol l Weevil Song", " A Lover's Question" an d others including the Is ley Brothers current release, " Pop That Thang".

Krytiu k also finalized negotiations for a sub-publishing deal with Charlie Boy Music and the Harbot Music catalogues.

Charlie Boy's recent re leases included Ray Price's "That's What Leavin's About" and from the Harbot catalogue, Crystal Chandeliers" by Charley Pride .

POPPY F AMllY/STAMPEDERS IN F OR CBC F ORUM TAPING The fourth concert in its Summerfest '72 series, sees the CBC tape a " l ive" concert featuring the Poppy Family and Stampeders from the Ontario Place Foru m , Friday Ju ly 28th at 8 PM. Unfortu nate ly the CBC press re lease was dated J u ly 21 st and this issue doesn't hit the Toronto streets until the very day of the concert. Fortu nate ly however, the show is being taped for broadcast at a later date on the entire CBC radio AM and FM network.

The Poppy Family, Terry and Susan Jacks (Terry is su bject of this wee k's RPM cover ) , first broke into the national disc race with a budget produced session in Vancouver. The song, " Which Way You Goin' Bil ly ?" , a Terry J acks pe nning, went on to become an international hit and catapu lted the Poppy Family into the top of London 's roster of stars. Their " Bil ly" single certified for Canadian Gold (RPM Gold Leaf Award ) as did their fo l low-up a lbum. They have become one of the few sustaining successes on the Canadian disc front. Terry and Susan have just recently sp lit - not divorced, but are now releasing solo singles and albu ms because of the success each had with experimental solo singles over the past cou ple of years. Terry is currently making good headway up the RPM 1 00 with "Concrete Sea", another composition out

of his Gone Fishin' - BM I publishing house.

The Stam peders, who just recently scored four firsts in their hometown of Calgary, (being acce pted in Calgary was their biggest cou p ) are also big win ners with Canadian Gold . With eight years of many disappointments, rejections and everything e lse Lhat usual ly made groups split, they final ly hit with "Sweet City Woman" which went on to become one of the biggest se l ling singles in the world with re leases in more than 22 countries. Their fol low-u p a lbu m, "Against The Grain" chal ked u p surprising sales and certified for Canadian Gold only a few weeks after release . They are back on the charts once again, this ti me with " Wild Eyes" which is receiving strong support from the broadcast mediu m. Last year they picked up an RPM J uno Award as Canada's best Vocal / I nstru mental Group, with group member Rich Dodson receiving a S pecial RPM Award as Com poser of The Year (for penning "Sweet City Woman") . They have a lso received Awards from BMI Canada and the Moffat Broadcasting chain.

Hosting the CBC Radio's Summerfest '72 is A lex Trebek. Airing dates wil l be annou nced later.

If there are two stations that hold the key to a music ind ustry in Canada, or if there are a dozen that hold the key, or if there are even more, then isn 't it the responsib i l ity of the OTH E R broadcasters to pol ice the offenders who are caus ing the trou b le? If the percentage of Canad ian content is increased because of a few offenders, RPM shou ld be the last to b lame. VANCOUVER'S STUDIO 3 WOOS WEST COAST CLIENTELE

Stu d io 3, the first to i ntroduce 8 then 16 track syste ms to the West Coast, have recently undergone renovations inc lud ing a new board . Taking advantage of the newsworthy event, Studio 3 invited Vancouver and area record people to look in on their new board, 16 track system - and new paint job. Hosti ng the six hour reception was Studio 3 's Ral ph Hard ing. G uests inc luded BM I Canada personne l , artists, managers, rad io and television personal i ties, members of the press, producers and even the ir com petit ion.

Studio 3 have put a lot of soun d u nder the i r be l t over the past few months inc lud ing the sou ndtrac k for the "Tal l Sh i ps" score as wel l as the lay ing down of sound for David G reenfie l d 's " New York Is Closed Ton ight".

The latter was a Doe l l-Lungren Produ ction and is released in Canada and the U .S . on the Lau rie labeL j ake Doe l l has just completed taping sessions for Ken Stolz and Pat MacDonnel .

The I r ish Rovers' CBCTV " l ive" set, taped during one of their television shows has been scrapped because of sou nd problems. Studio 3 was aske

'd to create a " l ive" situation for

their recording. A beer and food bash was arranged and the doors thrown open, resu lt ing i n a fu n pac ked stud io and a successfu l record i ng by the I rish Rovers. Their a lbu m, to be released on their own potato labe l, is expected short ly.

Ready for the stu dios again are Sunshyne and j a!;on Hoover. The latter achieved some su ccess in Ontario and Quebec with their Phonod isc distri buted single, "Everyth ing Is A l right" but fai led to get suffi cient numbers across the country to break national ly. Both Sunshyne and j ason Hoover rel ease on the New Syndrome labe l . j ust com pleted is an album session by recently discovered Bev Gore Langton from Victoria, and an al bum by j oy, prod uced by Merv Buchanan.

How nice it wou ld be for RPM to bel ieve that we hold the rei ns an d cal l the shots when it comes to percentages or new regulations. We real ly don't th i n k we are that im portant.

As for the record com pan ies, we wou ld l i ke to know why some of them take the side of the broadcasters when thi ngs are going we l l for their Canad ian content records, and then cry bloody murder when their records receive the usua l "garbage" rejection!

We l l friends, we just are n 't sure which way to turn. We are damned if we do, and we are dam ned if we don 't. Cou ld the whole bu nch of you get together and let us know exact ly wh ich way the wind i s b lowing?

Now if al l you Pol lyannas out there want to be l ieve that everything is coo l and that waves shou ldn 't be made, then let me know offiCia l ly . I would l i ke to have it on file that the ind ustry is happy (that wee k) because a week later, I don 't want to receive phone cal ls tell i ng me the i ndustry is all up in arms about two rad io stations.

On the other hand, have the record co mpanies eve r made their problems known to the CRTC and the other governing bodies that are interested in records? Or have the rad io stations come out against the other rad io stations that aren 't doing the ir part in maintaining the regu lations?

One other thi ng. We sti l l mai ntai n an open door pol icy for com ments from anyone in the trade who has a com ment. Letters to the editor wi l l be pri nted without the names of the writer if this req uest is made within the body of the com ment. We wou ld no more ask writers to identify themse lves than rad io stat ions ask cal lers to iden tify themselves on their phone-i n shows.

MUCH TOO MUCH MUSIC FROM COAST TO COAST

It seems that only five or six media monsters in Canada are capable of running a radio station , and the C RTC are hel l bent on making sure that a l l the available AM licences eventual ly land in the same hands . . . or are

' they . We wil l watch with great

interest. (Pub : See you in Vancouver at the cesspool . )

. • 1 .'" YO U A SKED FOR IT! 1 .. l j elvira capreese

You 've heard of . .. M UCH M O R E M US IC. Play around with those words and you ' l l find a line that is c loser to the truth. The odds are that you wil l find the winning arrange ment. Somebody already has. (Pub : Oh! Now! Aren 't we being a little direct ? ? ? )

On the Torontoladio scene . . . one radio station is losing its importance with the record companies. The listeners may react the same way. (Pub: That's right pal ! )

N O MATT E R .. . how you look at it, the Maple Music J un ket was a great success. I t's about time someone said that arid meant it. It is true.

The u nion concerts in the park netted one rock concert of the many dozens that are taking place in Toronto. One might ask the u nion where most of the money that is handed to the musicians real ly comes from.

FIVE MAN ELEC BAND CANCEL ONTARIO PLACE What was expected to be one of the highlights of the CBt radio network "iive" broadcasts from Ontario Place has turned into a large sized disappointment. Polydor's Five Man Electrical Band, sched uled for an appearance at the mu l ti-mil l ion do l lar Ontario Govern ment showplace , have apparently cance l led out their concert.

There have been many ru mours circu lating throughout the trade on both sides of the border that the high ly successfu l Ottawa gro u p were sp litting. These rumours had been denied but this sudden cance l lation has stre ngthened the ru mours. Their current single "The Devil and Miss Lucy" hasn 't been their fastest mover, with only regional action keeping it active.

The answer is rock records. The other question is whether there was a rock musician re presented on the com mittee that picked the bands that wil l p lay in the parks of Toronto . (Pub: I T R UST you have al l the facts ! )

The Vancouver booking scene is the tal k of Toronto , and none of it is ve ry good. We though t the Toronto booking scene was ·the cesspool of Canadian entertain ment, but the honour must go to Vancouvr and one of the "big boys" there . This casts the same shadow of doubt on the Vancouver u nion as the doubt that the Toronto u nion is real ly policing what is happening to their members.

Rumour has it . . . that a Toronto sign painter is being kept very busy painting the cal l letters of a Toronto station, reversing them and a few signs that aren 't com plimentary to the C RTC. A laxative may be in order.

TROIANO'S MERCURY SET BECOMES HOT CHART ITEM

Mercury's first big Canadian content acquisition , Dom Troiano, has become an item of national interest by both programmers and consu mers. His initial album release "Domenic Troiano"; is al ready picking up preferred play across the country and is on its way to becoming a top se l ler for Mercury.

It's interesting to note that although Troiano plays lead guitar for the James Gang, a Capitol recording unit, he has signed a solo recording agree ment with Mercury. The a lbum was given an even greater Canadian content val ue (it q ualifies for th ree parts M A L) with back-up m usicians from Mandala and Bush and vocals by Shawn J ackson. One of the most req uested selections on the albu m is "Writings On The Wal l " which has been included on the next, Three Dog Night a lbum.

Taking part in the signing and overseeing of Troiano's set were Stan Bly, National Director of Promotion for Mercury ; Denny Rosencrantz, West Coast A&R, who convinced Troiano to join Mercury; and Mike Gormley, Director of Publicity and Canadian Ambassador to Mercu ry and Chicago, in general.

Canadian record production is on the increase. Cou ntry music has never been put out so often and in such great Q UANTITY .. Howdy partner. Aren 't you proud to be a Canadian in Canadian cou ntry, but what about the other forms of music. (Pub: You mean it's a country cou ntry !! !)

. RPM is plan ning a move into bigger ·

q uarters sometime at the end of August. The new address wil l be announced in RPM shortly. The new buil ding is only a stones-throw from the present location, but don 't throw stones.

MARIPOSA WET BUT AHEAD ON PROFIT Centre Island j ust across the water from Toronto was the setting for the 1 2th annual Mariposa Folk Festival he ld on J u ly 1 4, 1 5 , and 1 6 . He lping to organize the festival were Buzz Chertkoff, festival administrator, Este l l e K lein, Leigh Cline, Richard F lohil , pu blic relations/pu blicity and I sla Adelson along with the many who did volu nteer wor k to get it al l together.

The first two days of the festival were very wet due to the rains that fe l l and fe l l . By Su nday the sun was u p, the ground was slippery and soggy but the 1 4,000 people who showed up to a sold out day came to enjoy the various concerts, the craftsmen and the ethnic groups displaying their dances and music.

A mong those performing for the th ree-day festival were M urray McLauchlan, Bruce Cockburn, Edith Butler, J oh n Prine, Leon Redbone and Bu k ka White to na me a few.

Th music ranged from rustic b l ues to religious tu nes to sing-along familiar fo l k tu nes. Special guest appearances were made by J oni Mitche l l , Neil You ng and Bob Dylan who reportedly was not on the I sland but those who were clapping along to his songs wou ld strongly disagree with that statement.

The diversified crafts inc luded weaving, painting, carving, jewel lery and leather goods which were being made and sold by the craftsmen who were from all parts of the cou ntry. Mariposa, the only annual fo l k festival is a place t o meet friends, sing songs, clap along and fee l the music and activity around you and being part of it al l .

COVER STORY IERRYJACKS INTO SOLO DISC SCENE Wel l - the story 's out. Terry and Susan Jacks have split. Hang onto your tu rntables it's not what you th ink and if you make a pass at Susan you ' l l sti II have to answer to Terry. The big fisherman has gone solo and he 's made fast in roads with his fi rst single, "Concrete Sea" on the London label .

Now - what makes Terry run ? Success in the songwri ting an d recording fie ld , is the answer. Let's go bac k to the year 1969. Terry and Susan were just a cou ple of love birds - up to their nest in hock. They were trying to break through the disc jungle but weren 't having much success. An old warehouse, housing a makeshift sound syste m was one of their hangouts and they played arou nd, overdu bbed, played around a bit more and final ly had the nerve to release " Which Way You Goin ' Bil ly ? " Need less t o say the hardhearted industry, general ly , said get lost - Poppy who?

Where there's smoke there 's fire and Terry who wrote "Bil ly" was sizzling. He knew he had a hit and he was going to prove it. Al ice Koury and Fraser Jamieson, the latte r treating Terry like a son , also believed that th is west coast d uo could su pp ly the 1969 answer for a Canadian happening. Promotion , hy pe, and more promotion an d final ly the London network of promotion people began to click. Susan and Terry wre picking up strong numbers in principal and breakout markets across Canada. Then th e Americans

discovered the J acks and it wasn ' t long before "Bil ly" became a national U.S. hit with Europe fol lowing. The Poppy Family were the Canadian happening for 1 969 -they received the honours of being voted by the industry (RPM) J uno Awards) as having produced the best single of the year. The single also certified for Canadian Gold (RPM Gold Leaf Award ) once its direction was established.

Re lease after release see med to click for the handsome cou ple from Vancouver. They tried their hand at solo bits and Susan came out ahead , several times. They conferred with Fraser an d Alice and decided to h it the disc trail , singly . Susan has proven her point before but she was sti l l tagged Poppy Family featuring Susan J acks. Now however, they have decided to remain man and wife but go their separate record ways, which doesn't real ly mean they ' l l never record together again. After al l , it gets pretty lonely being just a solo artist. A Gold Record is a poor substitute for keeping you warm at n ight. Anyway Terry bust out first and a look at the charts wil l show j ust what he is doing.

There 's more to the success story of Susan and Terry J acks than that which meets the eye or , for that matter, is public record. I t was mentioned that back i n 1 9 69 they were in hock. Like most married cou ples, they owed a few bucks and real ly didn't have much of a futu re cut out for them. Terry Ii ked to fish and Susan was just a homebody.

But what happened to them after they h;. with " Bil l y" shoul d serve as an example of

RPM 5/8/72 - - - 9 what can happen to Canadian talent - if they believe and are masters of their own destiny .

The J acks aren't spooked by agents or publishers. They work when they want to and how they want to. They demand and if their demands aren 't met, Terry goes fishing and Susan remains a homebody. Their demands are usual ly met however, but Terry manages to get in a lot of fishing from his yatch, which is docked , down the cliff, from their $ 1 25,000 home on the Pacific coast. I f the water is too rough for docking he usual ly ties-u p in a smal l in let not far from their home - but they can make this in no time in their expensive I talian sports car.

Can you make money in the Canadian m usic industry ? There 's one who has, on our front cover this week - Terry J acks.

IN THE AFTERMATH OF THE MAPLE MUSIC JUNKET Wel l the Maple M usic J unke t seems to have done its job. According to the non-profit Maple Music I nc. the number of consu mers who wil l eventual ly have been reached by Maple Music hype is close to th ree hundred mil l ion . A l ready , thousands of inches of

::; l"""-__ J_O_H_N_W_A_T_T._s_.,,J type have tol d the story of Canadian music to the Eu ropean people. The reach of some of the journalists who too k part in the J un ket is little short of incredible. Three British papers have staggering circulations: the News of the World, eighteen mil lion, the Daily Mirror, fou rteen mil lion and .the Sun, ten mil lion . These three papers alone, have exposed our music , in a positive way , to an audience which is larger than the entire popu lation of Canada.

A few quotes, se lected by Maple Music I nc . tel l the story : " I believe that Canada cou l d become a leading force in world music." Tony Norman, New Musical Express; "Canadian pop has p lenty to be proud of." Michael Cable, Daily Mail ; "the most ambitious government-' industry sponsored music festival ever", Gordon Reed, Scottish Daily Express; " beautifu l ly organized ", Peter J ones, Record Mirror.

These q uotes tel l the story but of cou rse everything was not roses, there were a few put downs, and Maple M usic of cou rse ignores these, but it is im possible to deny that the opinions expressed have been overwhel mingly favou rable. Thus the J unket has achieved its stated goal , Canadian artists have been written about in Euro pe. Many of the artists wil l be appearing in Eu ro pe shortly. Singles and al bums have been, or are being, released . For this we must than k the originators and the organizers of the J un ket as well as the guests.

In case you!re beginning to thin k that this little colu m n has broken with tradition and is not going to gri pe and be l lyache, you 're wrong. I wil l gripe and bel lyache in the approved manner but for once I am prepared to offer some constructive, although probably soon to be shot down , advice. Gripe Department: I would be wil ling to bet my album col lection that more has been written about Canadian music in the foreign press in the last two months than has been written in the Canadian daily p ress in

the last ten years. Constructive Advice Department: Al though it shoul d not be needed , organize a j unket in Canada, along similar lines to MMJ I for the excl usive edification of the Canadian media.

I nstead of Montreal and Toronto as showplaces, it woul d be perhaps advisable to se lect one western and one eastern site. In the aftermath of this domestic J un ket, fo l low-up im mediately with a fu l l scale cross Canada tour by al l the artists on the bil l , hitting fifteen or so major centres.

This idea is not based on the principle that the artists on the bil l wil l become acclaimed throughout the land and their records will therefore make money in this country . It is based rather on the idea that we cannot fairly expect to establish stars in England , Germany, the United States, or Tasmania, until they are bonafide stars here . Every producer has come u p against the age o ld q uestion, " Wel l , what's it doing in Canada? " when trying to make a deal elsewhere or to secure a release date if a deal has al ready been made. Who knows, perhaps the tou r part of this domestic J un ket cou ld become an annual event, featuring Canada's biggest stars, along with a few lesser l ights. Such an annual happening cou ld develop into the highl ight of the year's concerts in each centre it plays and there is no reason on earth why it cou ld not make money, after a teething pe riod, to pay the artists a substantial fee with any profit accruing to Maple Music I nc., or a similar body set u p to promote the affair.

In conju nction with this, I suggest some form of service to provide news of this star buil ding to the media and record people in other countries. For too long, people in other countries, particularly the United States, have been u n der the i l l usion that one or two radio stations in this cou ntry fairly and accurately reflect what is going on here. This myth must be shattered . It has already been the undoing of too many good artists and is cu rrently kil ling one of our biggest hits. I don't l ike to harp on this one, but to indicate that my harping is done in good faith I wil l state that I have never received a colour television from the group in question, I have never gone on an expense paid trip with them, I don 't have part of the publishing and I don 't boo k the m. The grou p is the Stampeders, a n d the hit is " Wild Eyes". This particu lar record has sold al most fifty thousand copies in Canada O UTS I DE ONTA R I O. The sales in Ontario are negligible due to the refusal of one station, CH UM, 1331 Yonge Street, Toronto, Ontario owned by C H U M Limited, to play it, except for spotty and useless play during the two weeks required by the MlS laws.

For many American stations, CH U M is

considered to be the great white god of Canadian recordom. If CH UM doesn 't Ii ke it, you can pretty wel l write off the hopes of a Canadian-signed group making i t in the U .S . What the A mericans don 't seem to know is that C H U M d oes not come close to reflecting what is real ly Ihappening here . Takin g a q uick glance at the CHUM Chart wou l d convince un knowing A merican program mers and record people that Pagliaro's "Some Sing, Some Dance" and April Wine's "Bad Side of the Moon" are ,bigger hits than " Wild Eyes". What these people cou ldn 't be expected to know is that both Pagliaro and April Wine are produced by M uch Productions which co-incidental ly happens to be owned by CH UM Limited and that the publishing of both sides of the Pagliaro and the flip side of the April Wine are owned by Su mmerlea/Winterlea, which again coincidental ly, is owned by CH U M Limited. They are both exce l lent records, there is no q uestion of that, and they do deserve airplay on CH U M, the C H U M owned stations across Canada, a n d on any other station for which the sou nd is suitable . But they do not deserve airplay on CHUM to the excl usion of " Wild Eyes" or any other record which has a l most reached the point of being certified gol d in Canada with virtual ly no sales i n Ontario, a market which usual l y accou nts for half of the total national sales.

I t 's an incredibly ludicrous situation , and if the C RTC or any other government body is scared to take steps, then the industry itself must make it clear to the world that C H U M is not representative of the Canadian m usic scene, and that other sources of information must be considered. Without this educational process, any domestic j u n ket wou ld be value less as far as international impact goes.

DALLAS HARMS HITS WITH COLUMBIA DECK Colu mbia's newest country acq uisition , Dal las Harms, is proving to be one of the label 's strongest contenders for a national breakout. His initial single re lease, " I n The Loving Arms Of My Marie" which he wrote, has made good moves up the RPM Cou ntry Playlist - much of it due to the readiness of country programmers to lean on what several term "a bitch of a record". The single was produced by Gary Buck for Arpeggio Productions but there is no indication of publisher or where the single was taped.

Harms, born in Drake, Saskatchewan, fronts a group known as Shiloh which also features a cou ple of other top flight recording artists - Donna Ramsay and Lee Roy Anderson. Miss Ramsay previously released on the Astra label and created a national image for herself with her single, "Something I n Your Face". She wil l be seen shortly on Cy True 's CBC-TVer "Country time" out of Halifax.

Anderson , who goes u nder the name of Lee Roy and releases on the RCA label , is perhaps one of Canada's most unde r-rated pop

STONES PASS THROUGH WITHOUT INCIDENT The famous Rol ling Stones currently on a North American tour were into Toronto for two shows on J u ly 1 5 th. Over 30 ,000 atte nded the concerts. There were 400 additional police on duty at Maple Leaf Gardens in anticipation of trouble from the crowds but there were no incidents either before or after the concerts.

Opening the Rol ling Stones show was Stevie Wonder who was very wel l received . Although the temperatu re in the Gardens was 1 05 degrees it did n't affect the enthusiasm of the crowd with the appearance of Mick J agger on stage. The Stones' latest LP "Exile on Main Street" on the Kinney label is currently listed at No. 1 on the RPM chart.

The main problem at other concerts have been scalpers sefling u nsolicited tickets causing fans to be turned away at the door. This problem occu red in Montreal where more than 3,000 people were u nable to get in to see the gro u p at the Foru m. This caused a riot with breaking of windows soon quel led by the riot sq uad brought in to se ttle the crowd. Another incident that occurred

in Montreal was a bomb placed in one of the trucks carrying the group 's equipment.

KARL ERIKSON SGNED TO BEECHWOOD Wil li Morrison, of Beech wood-Capitol M usic, has announced the signing of an exclusive writing contract with Karl E rikson , Erikson has been writing and performing for some years, and has, amongst other things, had an albu m released in Australia.

As a resu lt of his demos for BeechwoodCapitol , Erikson has generated considerable interest among record com panies. A recording-contract signing is ex pected to be annou nced shortly.

country artists. A native of Calgary, Lee Roy has been kicking around the industry for many years and has re leased exceptional ly wel l produced singles and al bums but has never bent enough programmer ears to catch on. His most recent release, " My Soul Sings Out", received token play but not enough to establish him nationally. His next release, " Hold On To A Little Bit Of Love" is expected shortly. Lee Roy p lays lead guitar and five string banjo in the Shiloh group.

Other members of Shiloh are Ken Scott, bass p layer and singer who hails from Stavely A lberta; and d ru m mer Ian Clark of Hamilton.

Shil oh are into the com mercial pop/country and b lue grass music and del iver a very tight and hard d riving four part harmony. M uch of their success on the night clu b circuit, boo ked by Haro ld Kudlets of Hamilton, is their ability o play their audience. They are equal ly at home with pop as they are with country.

After playing several dates throughout Ontario they head for Prince Edward I sland for three wee ks.

RECORDING SESSION SET FOR EDWARD, GEORGE, HARDING

Celebration recording artists, Edward, George & Harding, have returned to Toronto from a successful tou r of the Atlantic Provinces and wilt shortly move into Eastern Studios for an a lbu m session . Their manager, Mark Robbins, wi l l loo k after production chores.

The trio, who have had much success on the U .S . col l ege circuit, open at George's in Toronto from J u ly 31 st to A ugust 5th. They return to the east coast and a date at the Black Knight Lounge , in Halifax, from Aug 21 through Sept. 9.

VALADE/DIRT BAND GO FOR QUEBEC UA's Quebec promotion manager, Keith Patten can take a bow for the phenomenal action being given the left fie lder hit " J am balaya" by the Nitty G ritty Dirt Band. It is currently the, strongest sel ling single in the province being on every major Quebec radio station chart. The single experienced only limited success in Anglo Canada and the U.S.

Patten is moving in on UA's latest Canadian acquisition , Claudia Valade. Her initial single release, " Pour Un Hom me" is now beginning to show early indications of a breakout across the province. Miss Valade has lent herself to Patten who has escorted her on a successful province-wide tou r of radio and television stations.

Another UA Canadian signing, Peter Thom, is showing ear ly promise with his single " Letter To J ac ksonvil l e" and the album from which it was cu l led. Thom p layed Montreal 's Karma Coffee House and tou red Montreal radio and television stations which accounted for wide acceptance of his record product.

QUALITY'S MAMA LION CONTEST BRINGS LION CUB TO NEW ZOO Quality 'S Ontario Promotion Manager Bob Morten recently put together a contest that brought much attention to Toronto's new zoo (soon to open ) and to Mama Lion ( Ly ne Carey) who appeared recently at the Colonial Tavern. It also resu l ted in Mr. Walter Gray, Director of Puhlic Affairs for the New Metro Zoo, being presented with a cheq ue for $ 3 00 from Quality for the purchase of a lion cub. The contest was hel d in conju nction with C K F H , Sherman's M usic Centre and Q uality Records Limited .

Contest,e ntrants were asked to submit a name for the lion cub to CKFH and were also asked to su pport the " New Metro Toronto Zoo". Quality arranged for Mama Lion preserve wild l ife bumper stickers, which were available at CKFH, Shermans and the Colonial along with posters and photos.

Prizes consisted of: First prize: a j u ke box fil led with top 40 hits pl us selected gol den goodies (not all Quality ); Second prize: $ 1 5 0 retail val ue of Quality Record albu ms (approximate ly 25 al bu ms); and 5 ru nners u p who were treated to a dinner at the Colonial Tavern.

Winning entrant was from Kent Ch milar of Mississauga who named the cub Torzo. Second prize went to Ke l ly Ly nch of Toronto for the name Roarmus.

In appreciation for the efforts of CKFH, Miss Carey , Shermans, t he Colonial Tavern and Q uality Records, Mr. G ray presented each organization with a certificate of appreciation from the New Metro Zoo. The cheq ue for $ 300 was turned over to Gray by Miss Carey.

Duff Roman presented the contest winners with their prizes at Shermans M usic Centre (J uly 7 ) .

Other events that l e d t o t h e success o f the contest were spots purchased on CKFH along with the station's own public service annou ncements to promote the zoo and the contest; thirty second spots to promote " Mama Lion" at the Colonial; a taped interview with " Mama Lion" on CFTR along with visits to CH UM-FM, CKFH and C KOC; and a press/radio reception at the Colonial Tavern in conjunction with A m pex, tape distributors.

DECCA'S WISHBONE ASH INTO TORONTO'S VARSITY Decca recording artists, Wishbone Ash, are into Toronto's Varsity Stadium for a J uly 31 st e ngagement. Wishbone Ash wil l be sharing the bil l with Black Sabbath and Argent. The English group recen tly had their third a lbum released by Decca, "Argus".

The a lbum gained immediate reaction in Britain and is now enjoying strong initial acceptance from campus and progressive radio.

MCA, the distributor of Decca product in Canada, is preparing for the grou p's appearance with a fu l l schedu le of in-store display work, radio spots and interviews.

SKYLARK PUTS VANCOUVER INTO NATIONAL DISC RACE The latest and most legitimate Vancouver discovery, S ky lark, have brought Western Canada into the national record race. Their initial al bum re lease was somewhat u nique being released in the U.S. first with copies being rushed into their hometown of Vancouver before Canadian re lease, handled by Capitol . In view of the strong regional acceptance of the albu m, Bil l Bannon, ' national promotion manager for the label , has sched u led a " p u l l al l stops" promotion for the set.

S kylark is comprised of four Vancouve r musicians, David Foster , keyboards; Donny Gerrard, male vocalist and bass player; Duris Maxwe l l , dru mmer; and B.J . Cook.

Leader of the group is 22 year o ld David F oster who arranged and penned all the string parts with the exception of " A Long Way To Go" and " Wildflower" which were arranged by J i mmie Haske l l . F oster first entered the business at the age of sixteen and has worked with Chuck Berry and Pro co I Harum.

The a lbu m was produced in the U.S. with its engineer, Eirik Wangberg, taking coproduction credits. Wangberg first made a name for himself with th e re-recording and mixing of Pau l McCartney's " Ram" al bum.

S ky lark have been schedu led to perform with 3 Dog Night at a concert at Hol lywood 's Sportatoriu m in Miami and wil l tour the U.S. in the Fal l .

The group 's a lbum drew the fol lowing comment in R PM's New A l bu ms ( J u ly 29/7 2 ) : "Although not re leased in Canada yet, Vancouver-based S ky lark are a strong entry. Made up of various e lements of nowdefunct grou ps, S kylark is a group whose main strength is versatility. Moving from soft-rock to u p-te m po with ease, Skylark stands out, especial ly on ' Wil dflower ' ."

RUZICKA OF F WITH SIGNPOST ALBUM Bob Ruzicka, Edmonton born performer/ writer, has had J u l y 28th set as release date for his debut a lbum on the Signpost labe l . Signpost is distributed in Canada by WEA of Canada, Ltd .

Ruzicka made good chart gains in Canada with his initial single re lease, "Storm Warnings" which broke first on the cou ntry charts and moved onto the MO R Playlist and final ly established itself on the R PM 1 00. His a lbu m , "What The World 's A l l 'About" includes h is hit single a s we l l a s his fol l ow-u p sing le, " Down and Losing" .

Appearing on several CBC-TV network shows, incl uding six guest spots on the Tom my H unter Show, Ruzicka became a we l l known personality throughout Western Canada. He also assisted in the production of several CBC-TV documentaries for which he scored the music. It was because of these actjvities and the sponsorship of The Rich mond Organization (T RO) that he came to the attention of the , U .S. where his single was first re leased.

WHISKEY HOWL MEETS SUCCESS ON CANADIAN TOUR With their just released " Early I n The Morning" deck now showing strong moves towards the charts, WEA's Canadian hopefu l , Whiskey H owl , are meeting with good success on their cross-Canada tour. A l ready under their belts are appearances at Edmonton's Klondike Days (J u ly 25-27 ) and Chico Bay Resort in Saskatchewan (Aug 3 ) . They move down to Regina for the big western fair (Aug 5 ) and cap their western trip with an A ug 7 to 1 9th engagement at Gassy Jack's in Vancouver.

J ust prior to their trip west, the grou p were given a Winnebago house mobile for a two day promotion that centred around the Hamilton/Kitchener area with a capacity house performance at Water loo University to put the finishing touches on the promotion. The group invaded radio station CKOC and because of the warm reception given them by Nevin G rant and the roc staffers, packed the Winnebago with beer and food taking several of the station's on-air staff to Kitchener, for their show. Obviously the promotion was a su ccess with strong airplay being given the single by C KOC and CHYM: Their single was produ ced by J oh nny Sand lin at Toronto's Eastern Sound Studios.

If you go back to Wh ite Noise and " Electri c Storm ", this one will r ing some be l ls with you . Good , fu l l instrumentation with eerie vocal izing is mucho entertain i ng, and down right good. Be progressive, p lay it.

ROCK OF TH E R EN A I SSANCE J ones & Accademia Monteverd iana-Daffod i l SBA 1 60008-F

A tru ly del ightfu l exploration of some fi ne standards, we hate to pick favourites and won 't,· but wi l l si mply say that it is a finely produced orchestral al bum with wel l selected l ight c lassical material .

MA TTH EW & PETE R Playboy PBl 05-M

These two bunnies have excrutiati ngly squeeky voices which coul d easi ly turn you off this Si mon and Garfu nkel parody if i t weren 't for the real ly n ice instrumentation . The music saves "Smi les" and " Lu l labyes".

Al l depending on what size doses you take it i n , this al bum coul d be a delight, or a bore. The carnival the me is put across nice ly on "Tightrope". It gets pretty strange on "Out in the Woods". Definitely for a select audie nce.

Programmers DESIGNED FOR CANADIAN {{\ C'S

{\\ V O

TH E WRITING IS ON TH E WAll Programmers usual ly aren 't ready to accept a change, and if someth ing needs change, the programmer wil l resist u nt i l i t becomes absol utely necessary to make the move .

Music is u n dergoing a change, and very slowly the sound of radio is accom modating the l isteners ' wants , but because of the

The CROSS TA L K Programmers walt grealis

power of rad io, the sound continues to remain static whi le the progress ion of change takes its normal course.

What makes changes interesting is that a station that sits back and waits may see their com placency reflected in the rati ngs. The publ ic is much more keen about what it wants to hear than the program mer who can only try to give it to them.

M usic is getting better. The fou r man group that wandered into a recording studio a few years back and played and sang only adequately and depended on the beat and the "sound" is now becoming a th i ng of the past.

Lyrics are becoming more audi ble. Even requented love is coming back as the cou ntercu lture fades away. Harsh voices are

CRTC TRIES ON NEW ,PR IMAGE

The C RTC, who have often bee n criticized for their lack of public relations with the programmers, took a bold step in gett ing several of these people together for a coffee clotch in Toronto . Hosting the mid-morning bash , during rating wee k, were the C RTC's Doug McGowan and Shef Fran k l in . Some of the program mers present - and the C RTC representatives were of the opin ion that this was a move i n the right d irection and contrary to Toronto press reports, this wasn 't a cal l i ng on the carpet of Toronto programmers by the C RTC. The aim of the get together was to al low those on the programming leve l , ( rather than management) the opportun ity to meet mem bers of the C RTC and raise any q uestions and air problems that some may be having with the 30% Canadian content ru l ing.

Unfortu nate ly a gathering of programmers such as this with some i nvolved in an i ntense rating battle, wou ld create l ittle or no dialogue, let alone the revea l i ng of

being rep laced by mel low singers who h i t most of the notes, and l i ke it or not the bal lad is back in s low soft or medi u m tem po. Format radio hasn 't had to experience much of this in the past, and many young program mers are confused and ( bel ieve it or not) behind the times. To be extre mely h i p these days is to be away from " i t" !

Th i s may be why the de mograph ics are causi ng MO Rers to sound more l i ke the top 40ers and the top 40ers are l oo king for the softer sound that se l l s.

K id 's fare 'is becom ing less than of secondary i mportance. The h i t is someth ing that wil l su it al l ages and al l tastes. Make way for the return of the i nstru mental .

A programmer once said that what you bel ieve today , you m ust be ready to forget tomorrow as change continues to make music the most exciting business in the world . Be ready for anything, and keep the turntable open for bal lad, comedy records and who knows what else that may upset your balanced program ming. The l iste ner shows his preference at the record counters with h is coin . I n rating records or l isteners the two theories complement each other. The station that puts no value i n record sales, shou ld seek no value in the l istener ratings. I t 's a hard but true fact of l ife in program-

problems. One observer noted : " I real ize it wou ld be a momentous chore for the CRTC to meet ind ividual programmers but they shou ld make an effort to s ingle out those program mers of MOT music from the princi pal markets across Canada and have a one-at-a-ti me across the table confrontation between them and Pierre J uneau. Then, and only then woul d the real proble ms plagu ing the program mers come to l ight ."

I n any event, McGowan and Frankl i n are schedu l i ng further tal ks with program mers in other centres across Canada. I nc luded is a tentative Vancouver date fol lowed by a meeting with Ottawa programmers.

Attending the Toronto Hyatt House meeting were : J . Robert Wood (CH U M ) ; Don I nsley (C F RB) ; Don Le Brecht (CH F I-FM) ; George J oh ns (CFT R ) ; Bi l l Bal lentine (CKFM ) ; Carl Redhead (CH I N ) ; Bob Laine (CH UM-F M ) ; Gene Kirby ( C K E Y ) ; Bob Rhodes (C B L ) ; Duff Roman (C KF H ) ; A n n MacMittan (CH I N-FM ) ; J oh n Twomey (CJ RT-FM ) ; Bob Wagstaff (C BC) ; Adrian Marko (CJ RT-F M ) ; and J ean Ray mond S1. Cyr (CJ BC) .

m ing . . . to the station that is al ive.

If you bel ieve any of th is , bear in mind , that I am not a program mer, but I am a l istener and I know what I hear (or l i ke to hear, but maybe that is secondary to balanced programmers. I can al ways switch off the radio and put my money where the sound is . . . at the record cou nter and on my stereo set. That certain ly won 't show u p on the ratings. ( Not that I 've ever been sent one of those boo klets, nor have I ever met anyone who has . )

MLS INTRODUCES NEW RULING FOR MEMBERS Voting for the Maple Leaf System has been runn ing i nto several snags over the past few months, the worst bei ng last week ' s voting. Apparent ly several stations fai l ed to send their votes to the System 's co-chairman, Greg Haraldson, resu lting in a poor showi ng.

Nevin Grant, Chairman of the M LS , has therefore introd uced a new ru l ing whereby there must be 2/3 of the member stations voting on an agenda i n order that it be ruled a va l id vote. This means that seven stations must vote on any given agenda for the resu l ts to be b inding.

Grant is present ly on a two wee k hol iday and in h is abse nce, J ohn Novak wi l l be prepari ng the wee kly M LS agenda.

CHUM PROF ITS SHOW INCREASE CH UM Ltd ., who have recently purchased C KV N Vancouver, su bject to CRTC approval , have shown an increase in profits for the n i ne months end ing May 31 s1. Net profits have been l isted at $ 1 . 1 mi l l ion representing 36 cents a share as com pared with $ 724,906 or 24 cents a share for the same period last year.

I t's been reported that sales for the fu l l fiscal year are expected to set a record.

BROADCAST CANOl DATES 'TAKEN OF F CRTC HOOK The Canadian Rad io-Television Commission has announced that J i m Flem ing, a L iberal candidate for the October by-e lection i n Toronto's York-West d istri ct, w i l l b e al lowed to continue his broadcast activities over CFTO TV, in view of the exte nded waiting period from the announcement of the e lection ( March ) to i ts actually taking place. A CRTC announcement 1n May of 1 968 proh ibited cand idates for e lected office from continu ing the ir broadcasting activities du ri ng the cam paign period . The Commission has now defined this as be ing the eight wee ks prior to the e lection, thus a l lowing F leming to go back on the air. CFTO had removed Fleming from the airwaves fol lowing the annou ncement of h is candidacy .

I n Montreal , the C RTC i nvestigated a complaint against Rod Baker, a CJ A D on-air personal ity who is running as the Li beral cand idate for Lachine. The Commission ruled that since no federal e lection has yet been cal led, that i ts 1 968 annou nce ment had no beari ng on the situation. The Commission, d id , however, caution CJ A D from al lowing Bake r to make partisan remar ks over the air, and warned the station to be prepared to immediately offer eq ual t ime to candidates from other parties if he should.

N EVV S I N G LE : " DOVVN AN D LO S I N G " Bob Ruzicka is a young Canadian

from Edmonton. Arthur Mogull who heads Sign

post Records, recently commented, "I got the same strong vibrations hearing Ruzicka for the first time as I did when I first heard Dylan. Mary Travers. and Gordon Lightfoot There's no doubt in my mind that Ruzicka will attain international recognition and acceptance."

About a year ago, Howard Richmond, who heads the TRO music group, heard Ruzicka's multi-

faceted talents as a songwriter, performer and author of documentary television programs produced in Canada for CBG Richmond, flew to Canada to meet Ruzicka. He and Ruzicka spent a week exchanging ideas and plans for the future and reviewing songs that Ruzicka had written for Canadian artists, CBC Television programs, and for his own appearances on such programs as the Ian Tyson Show, Tommy Hunter Show, Tommy

Sanks Show, and others in Canada. Richmond was most impressed

with Ruzicka's ability to create, in his own unique way He also noted Ruzicka's awareness of social problems.

Richmond encouraged Ruzicka to write a group of songs that would eventually comprise his first LP Recently he and Ruzicka flew to Nashville, where the first record tracks were produced at the Quadrafonic Studios under Danny Davis' guidance.
