Although July was dominated by our Annual South Coast Lions’ Show project, we still managed to hold

both our Board of Directors and Club meeting.

This year’s South Coast Lions’ Show was another great success. This is truly a remarkable achievement considering the fact that our economy is in a recession and that the event now clashes with so many other events that are held in the area at the same time. Hats off to Lion Jean Masson and his team for pulling out all the stops and running this amazing event and also to our loyal helpers and supporters, without whom, this event would simply not happen. The teamwork that took place amongst our Lions and Lion Ladies was a fine example of how a group of volunteers can work together and achieve great things. Club Treasurer Richard Borradaile is still trying to finalise the finances but it looks as though we made a tidy profit for our community s e r v i c e projects.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Lion Jean Masson w h o s e m o t h e r , Meme, was called to rest l a s t w e e k . Meme was a much loved l o c a l w h o was a regular attendee at o u r C l u b ’ s s e n i o r C i t i z e n s events. She will be sorely missed.

We welcome L i o n R i c k Thompson as

our newest member and wish him many happy years of service and fellowship within our Sheppie Lions family. Lion Rick’s formal induction will take place during the Lions Leadership Retreat Dinner in September.

Our August Club meeting has been brought forward to Wednesday 23rd and the monthly Lions Bingo will take place on 19th August as we are hosting our Zone Meeting the following weekend.

Our next major project is our Annual Blind Bowlers’ weekend on 2/3 September.

Our 2017/2018 Club organigram has been accepted and all teams are now in place. We look forward to a really great year of service and fellowship.

Denis, congratulations on a fantastic show. The Herald team loved it and so did I. Also, as chairman of the Country Club, we hope we will always be “the home of the Lions Show”, in fact, we must talk about helping build a new clubhouse near the cricket pitch so the great Lions Club can become a permanent fixture in total. Well done Lions for all the effort and loonnnnng hours you all put in for no return except the satisfaction of raising much needed money for others less fortunate than many of us. The Herald and Port Shepstone Country Club are proud to be associated with you.

Bevis Fairbrother

Denis hi,

Thanks for your newsletter. As ever very interesting. The piece on the fire - that was REAL Lions work. Could you send copy of the fire piece please as I would like to put it in the SE News (International) as your clubs contribution. It's good PR both for your club and Lions in general. What's this from Council Chairman to Club President, don't you need a rest? Anyway congratulations on the new post. I'm 1st Vice for my club this year.

Please pass on my good wishes to all the Port Shepstone Lions and have a great year.

District Governor Ken was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England and is a Newcastle United supporter.

In 1975 at the age of 20 he married the love of his life Helen who, at the time was 18. They are still happily married today after 42 years. They have a son, David (40) and a daughter Louise (35)

In 1981 Ken was recruited by Eskom for its nuclear power station in Cape Town they emigrated to Sasolburg in South Africa. They both adapted quickly into their new community and it was then when their community awareness really began.

In 1985 Ken was transferred to Ellisrus where both him and Helen were soon running the local SPCA.

In 1990 the Toward family moved to Natal. They became more actively involved in assisting those less fortunate. Helen worked as a Carer at the Jona Vaughan home for the physical and mentally challenged and as a Trauma Councillor for Safecare, a community run project This is where they had their first encounter with Lions.

In 2007 Helen was invited to join The Lions Club of Amanzimtoti, and Ken was invited to a boy’s weekend camping with the Amanzimtoti Lions. Somehow, the roles were reversed and Ken ended up joining Amanzimtoti Lions instead. Helen became part of the working group known as the Amanzimtoti Lions Ladies. Two years later Helen joined the Lions club of Kingsburgh as a Lion, two Lions in one house belonging to different Clubs. One would think what a recipe for disaster but strangely not, Helen today is as much an Amanzimtoti Lion as she is a Kingsburgh Lion.

Within the Toti club, Ken has held many positions, including Club President, Treasurer and director, however he has always been able to avoid being Club Secretary.

At District level Ken has also held varies portfolios, including District Chairman, Zone Chairman, 2nd and 1st VDG - again managing to avoid the position of The Secretary...

During the 2017 Cape Town Convention, Ken was elected as the incoming District Governor for District 410C.Ken’s theme for the year is “Honour the past. Be proud of the Present and Look to the Future with Enthusiasm”Ken is extremely proud to be a Lion and equally proud of being a member of the Lions Club of Amanzimtoti. I believe that as Lions we do make a significant difference in the lives of those less fortunate within our societies.

Ken’s goal is to see our organisation grow to include different cultures, race, gender and ages. Our country is such a diverse country we are known throughout the world as the rainbow nation. How wonderful would it be if we could say that we are the organisation of choice for all people of South Africa, that we are truly the rainbow nation. Ken is appealing to all Lions Clubs in District 410C to find new members. Membership is the live blood of our Association. It is the responsibility of all members to see that we increase our membership and stem the resignations. Our future depends upon it!He also believes that leadership requires new blood and that we must ensure that we adapt with an ever-changing world. New Leadership brings with it fresh ideas and ultimately ensure a better future.

Lions has given Ken and Helen the opportunity to give back. Lions has given him the confidence to stand as a District Governor, Lions has offered him friendship and the opportunity to be part of a group of people whom he is proud to call friends.

The Port Shepstone Lions Club wishes District Governor Ken every success during his term as our District’s leader.

Despite the inclement weather conditions, a phenomenon that annually teases the organisers, The 2017 South Coast Lions' Show was a great success. The weekend event was supported by approximately 8500 locals and holiday makers, all of whom enjoyed A wide variety of entertainment for the whole family. The grounds layout provided good

exposure for the 124 exhibitors and stallholders, both indoor and outdoor. There was ample parking right next to the show grounds and the toilet facilities, sponsored by M-Projects, were constantly maintained by a dedicated cleaning staff. The electricity generators for the entertainment and catering tents were sponsored by Mascor and Multicrop Construction and diesel for the generators was sponsored by Wozani Fuels. Show organisers, The Lions Club of Port Shepstone, were extremely grateful for the sponsorship and support provided by main sponsors, UGU South Coast Tourism.

The Show started off with the traditional Lions' "Laugh Out Loud" Comedy Evening on Thursday. Approximately 850 tickets were sold and the entertainment tent was packed. Local musician, Lesley Dancaster was Emcee or the evening. The entertainment began with a superb performance by singers David Marks and Winston Smile. Comedian Tony De King then took to the stage and provided hilarious stand up comedy, generating much laughter from the very festive audience. The evening ended off with superb performance by local singer Promise Dlamini followed by Tony De King’s Elvis renditions. The comedy evening was a great success and the organisers are most grateful for the support received from the many local companies and individuals who attended.

Friday, which is traditionally an exhibitor's day saw an increased number of visitors attending compared to the previous year. This year's Show once again provided a full fun fair with plenty of adrenaline rides. Show stand judges, led by Mr John Graham took time to visit all the stands and begin with the adjudication process. Friday night's entertainment started off with a performance by well-known duo, “The Kickstands” which was followed by local band "Circle of Stones". Popular Durban band "Avade" then took to the stage and provided an array of excellent dance numbers. The evening finished off with music by local DJ Rudi Williamson. Emcee Bevis Fairbrother introduced the various bands and kept the audience entertained throughout the evening. Although the numbers were down on the previous year, those in attendance enjoyed the wide variety of music provided by the various bands.

The Saturday edition of the Show was, once again very well supported. Thousands of visitors started to stream through the gates shortly after opening time at 9am. Despite the heavy traffic entering the Country Club, there were no incidents reported. The 18th fairway which was allocated for parking, soon became full to capacity which resulted in an additional fairway being allocated for the overflow.

The arena entertainment schedule started off with the South Coast Strongman Competition which was very well supported by several contestants who kept the crowds in awe with their exceptional strength

and abilities. This was followed by an entertaining dog agility display by Gaby Frey and her team. The Le Riche Brothers then took to the arena and captivated the large crowds with their daring and internationally renowned motorcycle stunts. The official opening ceremony also took place in the main arena. Guests of honour included Ray Nkonyeni Municipality Deputy Mayor Ronnie Nair, UGU South Coast Tourism CEO Justin Macrory and Lions District 410-C Governor Ken Toward. Deputy Mayor Ronnie Nair addressed the audience, thanked the Lions for their fine efforts in community service and officially opened the Show. Port Shepstone Lions Club President Denis Meyer and South Coast Tourism CEO Justin Macrory and District Governor Ken Toward also addressed the audience and expressed their appreciation to all involved with this year's Show. This was followed by the official exhibitor prize giving ceremony. A total of 124 indoor and outdoor exhibits were on display at this year's Show. The following prizes were awarded :

The prize giving ceremony was followed by a very entertaining KZN Sharks Board demonstration, The Le Riche Brothers, a vintage car display, pipers from the Margate Pipe Band and entertaining dance displays by "Phlex" and belly dancers.

The Beer Tent entertainment began mid afternoon with superb music by local band “Flat Tyre Groove”. They were followed by another very popular local band, “Four 5 Seconds” who kept the dance floor full throughout their performance. Johannesburg based band "The Dixie Hillbillies" were the main attraction of the evening. This talented 5 piece band produced an excellent performance that was very well received by the hundreds of supporters who enjoyed a night of superb musical entertainment. Local musician, Lesley Dancaster was, once again, Emcee for the evening and did a superb job!

n Sunday morning, visitors started to stream in from about 10am. The arena opened with a ride in by a

Ogroup of Harley Davidson motor cyclists, another enjoyable dog agility display by Gaby Frey and her team, a display by Maskhane Zulu Dancers, The Le Riche Brothers and a highly entertaining remote

control Rally Cross race which continued through the afternoon until the closure of the arena at 4pm.

Sax Café started the live music in the beer tent shortly after mid-day. These two talented ladies, Lesley Dancaster and Professor Nan Yeld provided superb music with their saxophones. Nan travelled all the way from Cape Town to be part of the Show. They were followed by local artists “Reflex” and “Anton Roosterbrood”. Anton played his usual excellent music well into the evening as he entertained the Lions and their helpers during their traditional after-party. Port Shepstone Country Club PRO Sandy Danckwerts was a superb emcee for the afternoon session.

Judging by the positive feedback received so far, the 2017 Show was a success. There are so many who deserve recognition for making the event the success that it was. The public who supported the Show en masse, the exhibitors/stallholders who set up superb displays and worked very long hours, The emcees and the various entertainers who really put on great shows for the audiences, the very generous sponsors, our local Press and also press from around the country, all the wonderful helpers who always come forward and worked very long hours, the Round Tablers from Sheppie 83 and Margate 46, Lions from the Reitz Lions Club in the Freestate who travelled hundreds of km's to assist at the Show and Lions from Ramsgate who assisted, Port Shepstone Country Club for the venue and of course the Port Shepstone Lions and Lion Ladies - the unsung heroes who gave of their time and means to make this project possible. Attendance figures were, once again impressive and the profits raised for charity will be announced once our treasurer has completed the massive task of finalising the accounts etc. The Port Shepstone Lions Club would like to thank the South Coast community and our visitors from all over South Africa for their much appreciated support.

Port Shepstone Lions’ President (IPCC) Denis Meyer and Lion Secretary Alastair Warman attended the Reitz Lions' 30th

Annual Induction Dinner on Saturday 22nd July. The weekend visit began with very enjoyable fellowship and hospitality with a group of Reitz Lions on Friday night at Bass Feather Lodge outside Reitz. On the Saturday night, IPCC Denis officially opened the Club's new "Willie Van Der Schyf" Clubhouse. This was a very proud and emotional moment for all present who paid tribute to a legend who contributed so much to his club and his community during his lifetime. Outgoing Club President and Zone 1 Chairman Werner Barnard delivered an excellent annual report highlighting the successes of this fine Lions Club during the past fiscal year. IPCC Denis then performed the Presidential Induction Ceremony (in Afrikaans nogal!) and presented the Reitz Lions with a certificate of appreciation in recognition of their

assistance at the South Coast Lions' Show for the past 2 years. He also announced that Port Shepstone Lions will transfer R10 000-00 into the Reitz Lions Charity account in recognition of their contributions towards the Show project. PDG Willie's framed Governor's blazer was then presented to the Van Der Schyf family by the Reitz Lions. The two Lions Clubs have formed very close bonds and are planning another holiday at The Pont in Port Edward for underprivileged children from the Freestate. Well done to the Reitz Lions and Ladies for their dedication to the service of mankind and for honouring their beloved PDG Willie whose legacy lives on through all of them.
