“Draw near to God and he will draw near to you.” James 4:8

At the June 11, 2006 Congregational Meeting a vote was taken and was unanimously approved that

beginning in 2006 the Pastor shall take a Sabbatical every five years. Now, five years later, we are working on

fulfilling that commitment set forth by the congregation.

A Sabbatical Committee consisting of Andi Sanders, Debbie Tedford, Doug Trenton and myself was

formed and in consultation with Brian it was decided that he would take his Sabbatical from July 18th thru

October 10, 2011. Upon taking this Sabbatical, Brian commits to continuing with us for a minimum of two

years.

The Reverend Dale Suggs who has been our guest Pastor before, has agreed to be our guest Pastor for

those Sundays that Brian is on Sabbatical. The Elders will be doing hospital visits and home communion.

Brian continues to receive full salary and benefits during this time. A Pastors Sabbatical Fund was

established to cover the costs of continuing education, study, retreats and travel expenses for Brian.

Additionally it will cover the cost of having a guest Pastor during the time he is away. Currently there is

$1,815.00 in the fund and our goal is to raise $4,000.00. Anything received above that will be carried over

for the next Sabbatical. If you wish to contribute to this fund, we invite you to make a gift to the Church

and designate your gift for “Pastors Sabbatical Fund”.

A Sabbatical is an amazing opportunity for Brian to refresh, recharge and draw much nearer to God and

upon his return to help bring us nearer to God also. It is also a wonderful opportunity for each and

everyone of us as the “Body of Christ” here at the Pacific Beach Christian Church to come together and help

our Church to move forward.

If you have any questions or ideas of where you may be of service to our Church during this time, please

do not hesitate to ask any one of us on the Sabbatical Committee.

Jeff McDowell, President PBCC

Sabbatical

I am blessed and grateful for the gift of time this congregation has committed to giving its pastor every

five years. Time has become an incredibly precious commodity in our fast-paced and often over-scheduled

24/7 culture. Yet from the very beginning God highlighted the importance of balance in both life and

creation. The Genesis account of creation reminds us that God did the work of creation in 6 days and then

designated the 7th day as a Sabbath day of rest (Genesis 2:1-3). Later we learn that honoring the Sabbath day

of rest was lifted up as one of the Ten Commandments given Moses by God and was intended for all,

including the servants and even animals (Exodus 20:8-11).

There is a balance and rhythm to life that God intended for all of creation from the very beginning, but

living in that balance and rhythm has become one of the great challenges of our time. With so little time for

rest, renewal, reflection and relationship-building, we often find ourselves disconnected…from God, self,

each other and creation. And, frankly, pastors are usually some of the worst offenders.

Perhaps this is why the idea of a prolonged “Sabbatical” for pastors has become embraced more fully in

the wider Church over the last several years. It provides a pastor the gift of time for some of that rest,

reflection and renewal. Pastors can then minister from a deeper well of faith, spirit and energy as they return

to their ministries refreshed and inspired.

While I have very much enjoyed and valued my many years of ministry here at PBCC, I welcome this

opportunity to step away for a few months for an extended time of rest, prayer, study, growth, exploration

and inspiration. Some of that time has already begun to take shape with a clergy retreat in Oregon, a trip

with Education Project International to Guatemala and a Storyteller’s Convention in Tennessee. But much

of the time will be less structured as I take advantage of the gift of unstructured time to do some reading,

reflecting, and even some sharing and learning with other colleagues.

So thank you for making this Sabbatical time possible and for taking on the responsibility of ministering

to one another in my absence. You are a great blessing to me! - Brian

Dear PBCC congregation, youth and families,

It is with a sad heart that I write this letter to

say goodbye. I will miss you all so very much.

Unfortunately, due to an ongoing family crisis, I

will be unable to return to work as your Youth

Minister. Sometimes the seasons of our life call us

to make sacrifices in order for us to grow and allow

God to work in our lives. This is one of those

times for me. I want you all to know that I have

been extremely blessed to have had the honor of

being your Youth Minister. I shall always consider

you as family and will continue to pray for you and

the ministry that God will continue through you.

Thank you for all of your prayer, support and

encouragement. May God truly bless you and use

you for His glory. I know He will.

Much Love, Keith

While all of us were saddened by Keith’s need to step

away from the ministry last month, our high school

youth have come together to plan some upcoming

events during this interim period. Please mark your

calendars for the following dates:

March 29 – Interfaith Shelter Network Dinner

(5:30pm)

April 9 – CCSA Hunger Walk at Mission Bay

(8am)

April 9-10 – Loch Leven Work Weekend

April 15 – Movie Nite Overnight

(8:30pm)

Additionally, please take note of the following

Summer Camp dates:

July 17-23 – Chi Rho Camp (7th and 8th grades)

July 24-30 – CYF I (9th and 10th grades)

July 31-Aug 6 – CYF II (11th and 12 grades)

sponsored by our Region is

being held April 29th thru May

Conference Center located in

the beautiful San Bernardino Mountains. This year’s

speaker will be Rev. Dr. Scott Taylor and his focus

will be on ways we can develop biblically-based

leadership principles. The cost is $125 per person

for one of the cabins or $145 per person for a two-

person room. Carpools will be arranged for those

wanting to go up together on Friday afternoon. For

The first meeting of our new

“Pastor’s Book Club” will

take place on Sunday evening,

March 27th, beginning at 6:30pm

at the church. Anyone who has read The Shack by

William Paul Young is welcome to join us for the

discussion.

Pastor’s Book Club

We were blessed to have Alan

and Joan Eubank with us in

November as they gave us a

glimpse into their 50-year

ministry in Thailand. Now on

Tuesday, March 29th, the Thai

Drama Troupe will be here in

San Diego for a special performance at the Ruamjai

International Church in North Park. The Troupe

was trained at the Christian Communications

Institute in Chiang Mai, an education center

founded and developed by the Eubanks. The

performance will begin at 6pm and we will arrange

carpools at the church for anyone wanting to attend

beginning at 5pm. Join us for what promises to be a

fun and meaningful evening!

PBCC is assisting the Pacific Beach United

Methodist Church with the Interfaith Shelter.

The shelter provides lodging and meals for

homeless people who have jobs and hope to

attain more permanent housing soon. If you

would like to help with a meal or supervision

for overnight stays, contact Brian Daly or

Lucie Sovinsky. While we have a schedule in

place, there is always room for volunteers.

Tijuana House Build

Church of the Valley has invited us to join

them for another Tijuana House Build

through Project Mercy on Saturday, May 21st.

We will meet at the church at 6am and

carpool to the border where we will meet the

COV group at 7am. We will return to PBCC

later that evening. Both skilled and unskilled

builders are welcome, so please sign up on

the bulletin board if you would like to join

us!

We will take up a special WOC offering

throughout Lent to assist with the relief

efforts in Japan following the devastating 9.0

earthquake and subsequent tsunami earlier

this month. Envelopes will remain in the

sanctuary chairs for the next several weeks for

anyone wanting to give a special love gift

demonstrating our concern and support for

the Japanese people. Thank you.

CCSA Hunger Walk

Interfaith Shelter Network

Week of

Compassion

Special

Offering

The Hunger Walk, CCSA’s largest fundraiser

of the year, will be held at beautiful Mission

Bay on Saturday, April 9th. The walk raises

money for services given to the homeless and

hungry of Pacific Beach and Clairemont. The

walk is just a pleasant 4.2 miles and is just

the thing for your fitness routine. Let’s have

a great showing for “Team PB Christian”. If

you cannot walk, but you would like to help

out, this year’s walkers will have pledge

envelopes that you can sign.

For more information,

see Lucie Sovinsky.
