Chaplains QuotePrincipal’sPerspective

Welcome to the Term 3 edition of towards tomorrow. I hope

you will get the same sense as I did that Kormilda remains a

happy, vibrant and enthusiastic college community. I now invite you to share in our reflections of Term 3, 2009.

David Shinkfield - Principal

Something old....

What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? If a brother or a sister is naked and lacks daily food and one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill,” and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. The Letter of James 2.14-16

Something new....

You wish to be happy? Loved? Safe? Secure? You want to turn to others in tough times and count on them? You want the warmth of true connection? You’d like to walk into the world each day knowing that it is a place of benevolence and hope? Then I have one answer: give. Give daily, in small ways, and you will be happier. Give and you will be healthier. Give and you will even live longer. Generous behaviour shines a protective light over the entire life span. The startling findings from our many studies demonstrate that if you engage in helping activities as a teen, you will still be reaping health benefits sixty or seventy years later. “Why Good Things Happen to Good People” by Stephen Post and Jill Neimark

Whole School Social Yr 10 Fete

In July the Quadrangle was transformed into our very own outdoor nightclub, where we were supervised by colourfully dressed teachers, and entertained by school bands, musicians, and DJ Fish! A few people were too embarrassed to dance with the lights on, but once they went down, the party really got started. Over 300 students attended and raised over $1000 for the Middle School Ski Trip.

The Year 10 Fete was held this term with students raising over $2000 for the Royal Darwin Hospital. Students flocked to the gym to ravage the cake stalls, barbecues, fried rice, smoothies, and spider stalls. Some spent time browsing bric-a-brac and artworks on display, while others rocked out on Guitar Hero or tried their luck at side-show alley themed games. Thank you to the parents who donated prizes, including a Kakadu scenic flight, movie tickets, and vouchers.

Year 9 Camp

The Year 9 camp was the best one I have been on yet. When we were in the gorge, we went swimming and caught turtles. We had to cook for ourselves, which didn’t go too well. We burnt our food, so most of the time we got other peoples left-over’s. Tom Banks, Yr 9

Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes

In class we read about Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. It was about a girl named Sadako. She tried to make 1000 paper cranes so she could live longer. She had leukaemia from when she was two years old, from the atomic bomb. When Sadako died she had only made 644 cranes, so all her friends made the other 356 paper cranes. We have learnt how to make paper cranes. Levina Smiler, M22

In class we read a story about Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. It’s about a girl who got sick after the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. Peace day in Japan is August 6 to remember the people who died. Alistair Darcy, M22

Basic Babysitting CourseKormilda College Sony Foundation Children’s Holiday Camp

Sony Camp was an experience to remember. Early mornings, piggy backs, LOTS of running and Media Team duties were all part of the challenge over the three days on which the camp took place. It was a real eye-opener to care for the campers who had disabilities. It was fun for them, and their smiles showed it. Stephanie Alm, Yr 11

Without the support of sponsors we would not be able to offer this valuable service each year. In 2009 we wish to thank

the Sony Foundation, the Northern Territory Government (Youth Vibe Holiday Grant), Catercare, the Elizabeth

Valley Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade, the Toy Library, Penny’s Fancy Dress Hire, and the many dedicated

Kormilda staff who assisted.

This term, 31 Indigenous students from Year 10 graduated from the Save the Children Fund - Basic Babysitting Course offered in Terms 2 and 3. The presenters were members of the local Indigenous community, and they trained the students in the fundamentals of child welfare, while teaching them practical hands on activities to help them provide suitable care for children under five.

Year 12 Community Service and Culture Project 2009

Seventeen Year 12 students and four teachers gathered at Darwin airport on 27 June for an 18 day adventure to Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. The group had been preparing for many months with fundraising activities and weekly Youth Development Programme lessons. The group included Jessica McCasker, Rebekah Dunn, David Ougham, Tiffany Furniss, Jayde Robinson, Michael Cowley, Eulaly Allen, Ebonie Pedretti, Shannon Willis, Polly Henry, Nikita Kruger, Lilia Anderson, Finn Andersen, Julia Fenton, Lisa Campbell, Christian Pertudo, Nompumelelo Mpehle and teachers Adelle Barry, Mitzi Hesper, Greg St Vincent and Shane Shedden.

Highlights of the project included visiting the Sunrise Children’s Village in Cambodia (an orphanage) where we met our sponsored student Ny Moy Teang; an overnight stay in Pak Sy Village in Laos where we donated more Big Brother Mouse books to the library that we helped to establish last year; and the holding of conversational English sessions with Vietnamese students at C & R, Le Pub (Hanoi), and at Hung Vuong University in Phy Tho. The team also planted trees in the Phuong Vy Commune and visited Birla Orphanage.

Thanks go to the following sponsors – Palmerston Regional Business Association (PRBA), Lions Club of Casuarina, Tiwi Land Council and Connellan Airways Trust in Australia and to Wide Eyed Tours and UNIS in Vietnam.

Malaysia Trip

This 10 day adventure took us to many different areas of Malaysia and Singapore. Our first stop was Kota Kinabalu; personally this was

our highlight of the trip. While we were there, the group participated in community service with school kids and orphaned children. We all

had heaps of fun doing various activities with them like football skills, drawing, jewellery making, and also doing puppet shows and didgeridoo dances for them.

These activities were done to make us realise how fortunate we really are, and to put smiles on the kid’s faces. Before leaving Kota Kinabalu we also experienced the amazing landscape and nature this place had to offer, like the base climb of Mt Kinabalu and Poring Hot Springs National Park.

Our next destination was Kuala Lumpur; our itinerary was based on historic and tourist hot spots. Our last stop was Singapore this short trip was spent visiting historic sites within the city, and then shopping and packing to go back

home to Darwin. We would encourage anyone to go on this amazing trip, as you make heaps of friends with the

local people and within the group, and the memories and experiences will stay with you forever.

Red Cross Artwork Exhibition

The students in 9.7 were visited by members of the Red Cross and invited to create artworks based on the concept of missing families, and what family means to them. These artworks were shown at an exhibition at the Supreme Court in Darwin. Students also wrote and recorded a song about family which was played at the opening of the exhibition.

Family makes me feel safe, they support me, they love me and I love them. I am very close to my brothers and enjoy spending time with them. My painting is about my Aunty because she looks after me and without her I’d be lonely. I am very grateful that I have someone to care for me. My painting is also about my country, Broome, in Western Australia. Kelisha Johnson

Family is very important to me. It is my greatest source of love. They care for me greatly and I care for them, we are there for each other when things go wrong. My painting is about my community, Amoonguna, near Alice Springs. Amoonguna is important to me because that’s where my family comes from. Lauree Stuart

My family means everything to me. If it wasn’t for my mother I wouldn’t be in this world. My painting is about my country where my father comes from, near Ngukurr. Alexandria Dixon

Bridge Indigenous Film Festival

Pak Edy, an Indonesian Teacher, came to Kormilda to participate in classes

and meet our students. He enjoyed his time here, but was amazed at how

busy the teachers are, and the difference in behaviour of students in schools. Our

Indonesian students will keep up their contact with Pak Edy through a Wikispace project they are currently working on, as well as through the more traditional snail-mail.

Warrick was talking about how they found the actors for the movie Samson and Delilah. Warrick was the Director of the movie. He went bush to communities to see who wanted to act in the film. They took photos of the ones who wanted to be actors, asked them questions and saw how they danced and acted in front of a camera. The Director said that they were going to be famous.

It was a drama movie but a love story too. The dancing part was the funniest part of the film about how they made Samson and Delilah.

The actors went to the Cannes Film Festival and they were like movie stars. Rowan McNamara wore a suit and a handkerchief under his new hat. He looked very different. Marissa Gibson wore a silver dress.

Aunty Maggie and the Rooster was the other film. It was a funny because Aunty Maggie gave the rooster mouth to beak resuscitation and CPR.

We were happy to go to the cinema. Some of us were very happy to see our country and some family in the movie. Some students would want to be in the movies but some of us would feel too shy. Some of us have already done some work with movies. M21

The Flexible Learning Unit (FLU) decided earlier this year to dedicate some of their class time to reclaiming a small wetland area and constructing a self-sustaining ‘toad-proof frog pond’. This term, students have been busy measuring their site, digging the pond, ordering the materials that will be needed to complete the project, and researching ways to keep the toads out. This project has been made possible with the support of Conservation Volunteers Australia, the CDU CALM Unit, Frog Watch NT, and the NT Government’s Natural Resources, Environment, and the Arts Department.

20th Anniversary Celebrations

On 28 August 2009 Kormilda College officially marked the occasion of 20 years of teaching and learning as an

Anglican and Uniting Church College.

Our guests included His Hon The Administrator Mr Tom Pauling AO, QC and Mrs Tessa Pauling, His Worship Mr Robert Macleod, Mayor of Palmerston; former Director (1987 to 1988) Dr Peter Harris; former Council Chairman Dr Jan Hills, and a number of past staff, and members of the current Board of Directors.

Principal David Shinkfield outlined his goals for the College, while Dr Peter Harris spoke about the ‘sparks that ignite change’ when referring to that landmark occasion on February 28, 1989 – the date the College was officially handed over to the two churches.

Saturday evening brought a change of tempo with student performances both in the Performing Arts and sport, and on Sunday, the weekend

concluded with a formal Church Service.

All in all, a successful weekend, that offered something to everyone!

College Captains Clare Paynter and Steven Miles were the Masters of Ceremony at Friday’s Launch of Celebrations.

Old Scholars were thin on the ground at Tuesdays 20/20 Cricket match so staff got involved to even out the teams.

The results came down to the final ball and a six would win the game for Kormilda’s first XI, however, a four was

struck to end the game with a tie.
