FEDERAL GOVERNl\1ENT AGENCIES AND NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS

Federal agencies provide a variety of government resources and services. They may distribute literature, conduct research, provide grants, and offer a range of technical assistance. Some have a specific focus on a particular aspect of substance abuse or related subjects. They may have resource catalogues and brochures describing their services and constituency (Federal agencies identified by *asterisk.).

National organizations, councils, and agencies can provide various kinds of assistance and information to individuals and groups. Services differin scope and focus, but all provide one or more of these:

•publications and media resources, information on alcoholism and other drug services in local areas, technical assistance in developing new programs, and referrals to other groups. Many have special divisions working on specific issues, e.g. women, ethnic populations, young people, etc.

REGIONAL EDUCATION MEDIA CENTERS (REMes)

Regional Educational Media Centers (REMCs) were mandated by state legislation in 1970 and have been developed by regional planning councils. They serve local school districts to meet their media needs. They have duplication facilities, purchase materials, produce mediaoriented program materials and assist in evaluation of materials. They also cooperate with service agencies in areas relating to educational media. They can be a resource to community prevention groups working cooperatively with their school systems.
