Hello members and Corvette enthusiasts,

Well spring is here; now we have to deal with the pollen and the rain! April will be here by the time you read this, and I know that a lot of people are getting ready to make the trip to the NCM for the BASH.

Another thing we need to be thinking about is SVS. It will be here in a month, and we need the support of all of our members to make it a success. Ron Deering is putting the final touches on numerous things prior to our next meeting. Don’t forget for SVS we need the help of everyone for baked goods, donation for the silent auction as well as door prizes. Saturday May 5, the morning of the show, we will be starting to set up around 7:30 am. At the May general meeting, we will have a special presentation by three of our members about their experience at the Ron Fellows driving experience. You should plan on being there to hear this. Watch the website for upcoming events. Trips to Panama City and Charleston are both coming up in the next month. Also, look at the non-club functions. Keep in mind if you know of a destination you are interested in going to; let Ron Deering or the Board of Directors know and we will try to schedule something. I look forward to seeing everyone on April 10th at the regular monthly meeting.

Ron Fellows Corvette Owners Performance Driving School An article by CGCC Members Bill Hepler, Tom Jarrett and Don Bailey

There is a great experience awaiting Corvette owners when you purchase a new car and decide to attend the “Ron Fellows Performance Driving School.” The school is located just west of Las Vegas at the Spring Mountain Motor Resort and Country Club in Pahrump, Nevada, and will provide you with a heightened level of appreciation for the Corvette’s awesome capabilities. You will definitely learn a lot about your car and become a more confident and skilled Corvette driver, whether you drive on the street or track.

The “Corvette Owners Course” is an introduction to performance driving and learning about your car, and is designed for C7 owners of all experience levels. You will receive detailed instruction followed by an opportunity to practice dynamic car control maneuvers, proper cornering techniques, Rev-Match/Paddle Shifting, Performance Data Recorder (PDR) operation, and the different Driving Modes (Eco, Weather, Tour, Sport and Track). You will use Weather, Touring, Sport and Track modes on the Ron Fellows track. At graduation, they will provide you detailed instruction on Launch Control, but you won’t get a chance to practice it. Take a 16GB, 32GB or larger (formatted to FAT32) SD card with you for the PDR to record your driving. See your Owner’s Manual. After you buy a new Corvette and sign up for the course, General Motors will pay the balance of the two-day course cost after you pay $1000. GM will pay Spring Mountain $1,500 for Stingray owners and $2695 for Grand Sport and Z06 owners. Everyone get the same course and training, but the difference in price is the school’s car cost and maintenance.

You will also have to pay for your own travel, rental car from the airport (assuming you fly there), your evening meals and one night’s room at the training facility for the night before the school starts. You’ll receive one free night in their condo, and two free breakfasts and lunches. While there, you will drive their cars, which will be the same model and transmission you own (Stingray, Grand Sport or Z-06, and manual or automatic). All Ron

Fellows Stingray cars have the Z51 performance package.

Plan to arrive the day prior to class, just after 3:00 PM. You will check-in and be assigned a condo room on their 330 acre facility. All the buildings are new, country club quality, and well kept. There is a classroom building, maintenance garage, clubhouse and other assorted buildings, as well as a maneuver training area and three serpentine driving tracks. The school continues to grow and has recently purchased another 500 acres for future expansion. The facility currently has over 150 Corvettes and 175 other model cars to train various levels of drivers including NASCAR and Formula One. The goal of the introductory, “Corvette Owner’s Course” is a step- by-step process to demonstrate your Corvette’s handling capabilities, develop confidence in the car and increase your knowledge of the Corvette’s systems. The instructors are superb at explaining all aspects of the Corvette and answering questions, as well as fine-tuning your driving skills. The two-day course is meant to be a fun, learning experience and there are no tests! Learn all you can while there and become a better and more confident C7 Corvette driver.

The first day starts with breakfast followed by classroom activities at 8:00 AM. The maximum class size is 20 owner-drivers, so sign up for the school well in advance to reserve your spot. The instructors take

30-45 minutes for each classroom session, followed by about 30-45 minutes of track time. This process repeats throughout each day until 4:00 PM. The owner-drivers are divided into groups of three or four for on-track driving instructions. The instructor will drive the lead “pace” car and communicate with the drivers in his group via FM radio tuned in your car, plus you’ll have a microphone to communicate Corvettes raring to go outside the classroom !

with him if necessary. You drive alone

except when you ride with an instructor

during certain skills exercises, and for a demonstration lap where the instructor

drives to show you the proper technique

for driving the track. If you bring a spouse

or another person not registered for the

school, they may ride with the instructor

during some track laps. To the question,

what level of the car’s capability are you

driving the demo lap, they answered only

about 70-75%.

Day one includes class member introductions and academics about Corvettes, followed by driving exercises. One exercise is emergency braking straight away on wet pavement followed by emergency braking with a lane change. The latter simulates collision avoidance. You will see the Corvette’s ability to steer while under maximum braking on wet pavement is phenomenal.

Another useful driving exercise is slow speed Figure 8s around cones, then doing it with the windshield covered. This technique makes you look to the side before you turn – something you’ll be expected to use on the track to find the Apex of the next curve. Admittedly this is somewhat unnatural for most drivers. You quickly learn how useful it is to look “ahead” to where you‘re going rather

Page 6: t meeting. Don’t forget for SVS · 12 Business Cards March 14 Minutes Club Store18 20 Classifieds Sponsors 28 Upcoming Events. ... Chris Green Herb Guck Daleis Hamrick Heck Hoeckendorf

than right in front of your car. You’ll also learn how to effectively use braking heading into and during

the turns. This exercise uses harder initial braking before the turn then eases off during the turn. For

most, this technique will be contrary to how you use brakes in street driving. You’ll learn to optimize

the car’s weight shift and see how a combination of brakes and throttle can “balance” the car to

achieve an optimum turn circle. You’ll quickly see the benefit of “throttle steering”.

The instructor will drive to demonstrate (with you as the passenger) on a Figure 8 course around traffic

cones on a wet surface. You will start in the “Touring” driving mode and quickly spin out (they want

you to experience that). You will then switch

to the “Weather” mode and experience how

it significantly reduces the tendency for the car

to lose rear traction and swap ends. The

instructors highly recommend using the

“Weather” driving mode during wet road conditions,

or even if you let a friend drive your car!

Another exercise you’ll run before driving on the track is circling around a small oval. This is used to show the proper technique of using the whole track to make turns - slowing just before the turn, arcing to the optimum point on the curve called the Apex, unwind your steering input and then accelerating. During these exercises, the instructors will emphasize how you can control the car’s weight shift by balancing brakes and throttle with proper power control and visually scanning ahead in preparation for the next turn.

Finally, you’ll get on the serpentine track with three or four other students in a “lead-follow” configuration, always behind the

instructor. You’ll be provided with a Snell SA2015 approved helmet and skull cap for on-track driving. You negotiate the turns driving directly behind his car as he talks you through the course and offers recommendations over the radio. There are cones placed along the track to aid in deceleration, weight balancing and finding the apex points. Once you’ve driven the track several times and gotten your turn behind the instructor, you’ll quickly learn the track’s curves and begin to increase your speed and confidence in the car. Automatic transmission drivers will get to use their paddle shifters, so it’s a great learning experience of what a new Corvette can do. And so, to the question, what level of the car’s capability

Page 7: t meeting. Don’t forget for SVS · 12 Business Cards March 14 Minutes Club Store18 20 Classifieds Sponsors 28 Upcoming Events. ... Chris Green Herb Guck Daleis Hamrick Heck Hoeckendorf

was I driving (thinking you were pushing it pretty hard), the instructors answered only about 40-45 percent! The instructors said they normally get about three classes out of a set of tires – check out the

“tire boneyard”.

If you get a new car and are offered the Corvette Owners School, we highly recommended you take advantage of it. You will learn that your Corvette has so much capability you weren’t aware of with its powerful engine, transmission, brakes and electronic systems; it will thoroughly amaze and impress you. Just knowing you own and drive a unique automobile with so much technology helping you to drive safely is truly impressive. If you decide to follow up with another Ron Fellows Driving School experience, they offer Level 1 and Level 2 training programs. The school has a photographer who takes individual pictures of you in your car on the track (available for purchase); and a group shot (free) that he puts on a take-away USB stick. Attending the course with other Classic Glass Corvette Club members is a great way to get to know others, learn about your car and have fun with your new C7 Corvette. If you decide you’re interested, ask that an announcement be made at our Club Meeting about your intention to attend, and see if anyone else might want to go with you. The three of us went together and had a great time, got to know our cars much better and made new

friendships. If you have any questions,

please contact any of us.

Our first lunch ride this year was a good one despite the frequent rain showers. But aside from getting our Corvettes a little dirty, 11 cars and 19 members had a great time talking and getting to know each other at Edna’s Restaurant in Chatsworth, Georgia. The food was great and the fellowship better. Following lunch, since the rain had exited the area, we had a spirited ride across Fort Mountain to Ellijay where we almost stuck our heads in the clouds at a favorite mountain overlook site. We then took a leisurely ride to Talking Rock for some country shopping with four cars. Carolyn decided that wasn’t enough shopping so three cars headed to Wild Cat on a Wing American Craft Gallery in Ball Ground. We did a lot of looking, but not much buying, fortunately. They also have a trendy wine tasting bar, but none of us decided to partake while driving our Corvettes. We have several important events in April that still have room for you to sign up. We are looking forward to the Infinite Hero Corvette show at Buyavette led by Doug and Chris Reed. We have 18 cars signed up, but have room for more. We want to make a good showing to entice the Lanier Corvette members to participate in SuperVette. Next is the Vettes doin’ Charleston event, led by Bob Klinger. Toward the end of April is the Summit Racing Atlanta Motorama led by Bob Zajicek. Bob sent out an email recently to encourage signups for this terrific event. We have six cars signed up, but definitely would like more. Bob will be publicizing SuperVette Saturday while there. We also have the Ark Encounter (you need to check with event manager PJ Ray to see if there are any available hotel rooms) followed by the popular National Corvette Museum (NCM) Michelin Bash. I will be leading an off-expressway caravan to the Bash for those signed up and not going on the Ark Encounter, and have sent an email to those members. May starts with our big event for the year; SuperVette Saturday on May 5th. Preparations are going well and we have several committees who are handling various details for the event. We still need auction donations from the membership. See Tonie Etter and Nancy Alexander for questions on what they need for the silent auction, and Greg Brooks for the auction. Our last planning meeting for committees is on Tuesday, April 17th at the Cherokee Cattle Company. We have only 49 cars signed up so far (with a club of 250+ members). So, please sign up as soon as possible. It is simple and you can make your payment easily via PayPal.

We have an event scheduled for May 17-19, the Circle City Beach Caravan, that still needs a manager. I have sent an email to the participants to ask for a volunteer. If anyone is considering participating in this event, and would be willing to coordinate the group getting to Dothan, please let me know. Those signed up need to submit their application for the event. All needed information for deadlines and payment options is on the calendar information link. You will note that proceeds from this event benefit the NCM. Check the website events calendar often for updates and information and to sign up for events. Changes are sometimes made to dates and events added, so looking at the website and calendar is the way to keep up to date. As always, let me know if you have a question or need help.

St. Paddy’s Day Rain Cruise to Chatsworth By Brenda Clapp

Photos by Calvin Cruce

On a cloudy, misty day eleven of our Classic Glass Corvettes met to cruise to Chatsworth GA for lunch at Edna's Restaurant. Ron Deering led the way, leaving the Marietta-Canton area behind as we headed up Highway 5 through the towns of Nelson, Tate, and Jasper. Old Federal Highway and the Trail of Tears led us into Chatsworth.

Nineteen members, some new and some old enjoyed delicious home cooking at Edna's in a nice private setting. Cindy and Alan gave St. Patrick's Day cards to all wishing us luck, hope and happiness!

And, this cruise fit the bill! The Patron Saint of Ireland sent sunshine!

Then off to Fort Mountain for a winding and thrilling ride! Tail of the Dragon has nothing on us! Our next stop was Talking Rock for shopping. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed a ride to their homes thinking of a great outing with our club.

TALKING ROCK INTERNATIONAL CORVETTE EXPO By Corey Vette – Roving Reporter

Excitement filled the air as a horde of Corvettes from CGCC arrived at the first annual Talking Rock

International Corvette Expo in Talking Rock GA.

Luckily, fearless leader “Eagle Eye Deering” didn’t blink as the Vettes rounded the bend, and he easily spotted the show field. All show spaces were quickly filled by three generations of CGCC Vettes.

Initially billed as a national show, the Expo became international when a vintage Corvette Wannabe barn find (MGB) was discovered in an old barn adjacent to the show field, and a new class was added.

A silver C5 convertible, owned by Dennis & Gilda Stubblefield was selected as the “Best to Show” by a blushing bride who was having her wedding reception in the park across the street. She wanted a pictorial remembrance of her nuptials to show her exuberance, and the Stubblefield duo happily obliged her. Unfortunately, the length of her wedded bliss was put in to question when, as she walked back across the street, the bride turned to her new hubby and said “Darling, why don’t you have a Corvette”.

The Expo had a unique approach to trophies; you could buy any one you wanted at the Talking Rock Antique Store.

Exhausted after enduring the high stress of the Expo, the collage of Corvettes headed out to visit a nearby winery. Steve Boaz unselfishly put his beautiful red C4 at risk by blocking the highway to let all the other Vettes pull out of the show field. Luckily, the only other traffic on the highway was a local cat, but it was a mean one.

The happy CGCC Corvette owners are looking forward with great anticipation to next year’s Expo and are eagerly registering early to make sure they get a show spot.

GM Designer Tom Peters' Inspiration

What does today’s Corvette have in common with the Hot Rods driven by Rat Fink and the other bug-eyed, hairy, drooling monsters of the ‘60s and 70s? The answer is Tom “Big Daddy” Peters. Ken Cearns has a trophy won by Jack Norton. He asked if anyone knew Jack – no one did. He gave it to Doug

Reed.

New Business: None

Ken introduced Wesley Wong, our guest speaker. Wesley is a retired FBI Special Agent. Since his retirement, he

has been involved with many activities, including working with the NCM as a Board member, participating in

race track and race team events and has been a Grand Marshal for NASCAR.

Wesley entertained the group with interesting stories about happenings at the museum. NCM hired a curator who

will be developing exhibits and also involved with planning, acquisition, cataloging various objects and vehicles

related to Corvette history. For example, the museum currently has 80 donated cars in storage. The real value is

in selling the cars; perhaps through an auction.

He mentioned that the History Channel did a series on car culture in the past and is now working on a story based

on the 1983 Corvette. The vehicle won’t be called a 1983 Corvette, but a story documenting the building of a car

and what it could have been.

The Peter Max Corvette collection, which was stored in New York parking garages for years, has been uncovered

and sold to investors who are restoring the vehicles. They are still deciding if these will be sold at auction or if

some may be donated to 9-11 victims.

He thanked us for supporting the charity Wreaths Across America. He is also involved with that charity and other

charities, including one he and Doug Reed work with.

He answered questions from the group but when asked about a mid-engine Corvette, Wesley was a little cagey.

He laughed and said there was a mid-engine Ford!

Everyone enjoyed Wesley’s talk. There was lots of laughter and applause.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:03pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Linda Greer-Zeppenfeld
