Tree! The Hanna Jazz Band will kick off the holiday season with the annual Christmas Tree Lighting in front

of the Anderson County Courthouse in downtown Anderson on Friday, December 5th at 6:00 pm.

Join the Hanna Jazz Band and Santa Claus for an evening of Christmas music and fun.

Congratulations to the TLH Jazz Band for annually being asked to have the honor of welcoming the

holiday season to Anderson!

Hanna Jazz Band to begin Anderson’s holiday celebration by

lighting the city Christmas tree!

All TLH Students to Receive

Chromebooks! Largely because of the outcome of the penny sales tax increase passing, we are going to be able to

issue all 10th-12th grade students Chromebooks in January (9th graders already have them)! We are

excited about the academic possibilities that these devices will afford our students, and happy that our

students will now have the opportunity to experience the “one-to-one” use of computers that students

in other districts enjoy. We anticipate that you may have questions and/or concerns about the new

technology and want to give you the opportunity to attend an informational session to have those

addressed. We plan to cover the purpose and vision for the use of the devices to support instruction,

any fees associated with the devices, and answer all of your questions.

There will be two sessions available:

December 3 at 9:00 am in our lecture hall

The second session will be held at the career campus. We will send out more information on that

session once the details are finalized. The form that must be signed by both parents and students has a

statement where the signers affirm that they are familiar with the policies, procedures, and practices in

the Anderson School District Five’s “One to One” Handbook. This handbook is located online at

http://goo.gl/c6MBcZ. It can also be found on our webpage under the Parent Tab.

PARENTS: FORMS AND MONEY DUE FOR CHROMEBOOKS

Students will be attending a training session during school hours and will receive a form to bring home

for you to sign on November 19. Your teen will not be issued a Chromebook until the form is signed

and returned and the $10.00 bag fee is paid (reduced lunch students will pay $1.95 and free lunch

students pay nothing). The deadline to return the signed form to the first block teacher is December 5,

but we would appreciate getting them back immediately. Students off campus first block should

submit them in the front office to Heather Holliday. Money will be paid to Mrs. Hughes in the school

store. Students may do this before school, during lunch, or during homeroom time.

New Red Cord Program for Seniors Who

Donate Blood

The district has approved the Red Cord program for seniors who donate at least 3 times before

graduation. This program is an initiative by AnMed Health Blood Center - to recognize graduating

seniors who have donated three or more times during their high school careers (via: High School

sponsored blood drives, community sponsored blood drives or visiting the Blood Center) by

presenting them with a special “Red Cord” to be worn during their graduation commencement

ceremonies, honoring them for their ‘life-saving’ gifts. They will also be recognized at the Senior

Awards night. When giving blood at a different location, students must designate the donation for

their particular high schools. Students ineligible to give blood (due to age, weight, or medical

restrictions) may recruit family members or friends to donate on their behalf (all donations must be

designated to the student at the time of donation to receive credit).

Also, previously, anyone with a tattoo had to wait a year to give blood. That is no longer the

case. As long as the tattoo was done at a licensed parlor that uses sterile equipment and non-reuseable

ink, there is no wait period to give blood.

Please encourage your 17-year-old who weighs at least 116 to donate blood on December 4 at the

Blood Mobile in the TLH parking lot between 8 am and 3 pm. Family members and friends are also

encouraged to donate at TLH on December 4.

Midterm Grade Reports Midterm grade reports will be issued to students on Wednesday, December 3, 2014.

Interact Club Meeting There will be a meeting of the Interact Club this Thursday, 11/20/14, during homeroom in Room 217.

Amazing Brain Science: Sleep, Adolescents

and Risk By Erin Cassidy-Eagle PhD / June 20, 2014

I love sleep. Not just sleeping, but the science of it all. This is why some of my friends and colleagues

call me “The Sleep Geek.” It’s a badge I wear proudly. My research looks at the effects of sleep on

older people. Evidence suggests that poor sleep can contribute to, or perhaps accelerate, memory loss

and cognitive decline in older populations. We’re involved in a study exploring whether sleep

therapy—helping people learn how to achieve better sleep—might improve outcomes in memory and

cognition over time.

Page 8: T. L. Hanna, an IB World School€¦ · T. L. Hanna, an IB World School 2600 Highway 81 North, Anderson, SC 29621 864-260-5110 11/19/14 Parent Newsletter # 17 holiday season to Anderson!

In adults, short sleep is linked to a wide range of problems, including obesity, hypertension, and

mental health issues such as anxiety, depression and suicidality. Sleep affects day-to-day choices and

behaviors, too. If you stay up all night, you’ll probably make riskier decisions at the casino. You’ll also

be ordering up some delicious high-fat, high-carb snacks to keep you fueled up for that game of

roulette—cravings for such fare increase as sleep decreases.

Our Brains and Sleep: When We Don't Get Enough

Loss of sleep directly affects mechanisms in our brains. Our prefrontal cortex is especially susceptible to

effects from poor sleep. It acts as our brain’s command center, decision maker and emotion regulator.

It’s the hall monitor for our personal social behaviors. It’s a big deal when it’s not working at top

pitch.

Another part of the brain that’s particularly affected by sleep loss is the ventral striatum, part of a

complex network of structures that mediate our responses to anticipated rewards. Your ventral

striatum is strongly activated when you anticipate things such as receiving money, tasting delicious

food or receiving praise or social rewards.

The ventral striatum and other structures interact with the executive-type functions of the prefrontal

cortex to evaluate things such as the value of a reward, the likelihood of receiving it and the risks

necessary to achieve it. You can thank them when you’d like that bicycle in the window, but not so

much that you’ll risk breaking the window to steal it.

Adolescent Brains and Sleep

Adolescents and young adults are a high-risk population when it comes to short sleep. Physically, they

need 9 or more hours of sleep a night, but 9 in 10 report getting less than this. Their internal clocks

change with puberty, so they don’t start feeling sleepy until late at night. School schedules typically

demand they awake quite early. Their weekday-weekend sleep patterns often change drastically.

They’re likely to stay up much later on weekends and sleep later in the day, which means their brains

and bodies are struggling Monday morning to re-regulate their sleep cycle for the week.

Adolescents are also going through an astonishing period of physical, social and mental development.

They have more freedom. They become more social. There are physical and hormonal changes in

their brains that influence emotions, motivations, sexual feelings and impulses, and response to risk

and reward. Their neurocognitive structures are becoming more mature, but it’s an ongoing process.

They’re still making plenty of poor decisions. It all adds up to a period of great excitement and great

hazard. Sexual behavior, alcohol and other drug use, criminal activity, and death by injury and suicide

all increase at this time. Depression, anxiety and other mental health problems often emerge.

So, while healthy sleep is important at all ages, it’s especially vital during the vulnerable time of

adolescence. The challenges adolescents face at baseline, simply through the normal process of human

development, are in many cases exactly those exacerbated by poor sleep.

Erin Cassidy-Eagle, PhD, is Director of Research at ETR. She is also an adjunct clinical assistant professor

in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine.

How To Make Extracurriculars Look Best

On College Applications

Posted: 11/06/2014 3:25 pm EST Updated: 11/06/2014 3:59 pm EST

You’ve probably been told all throughout high school to get involved and participate in clubs and

extracurriculars. For many college admissions officers, seeing that you’re really committed to your

activities proves that you’re responsible and you can manage your time well. Now that it’s college

application season, it’s time to impress admissions officers with your extracurricular involvement. Here

are a few tips get the most out of your clubs and make them look awesome on your college

applications!

1. List your extracurriculars in order of importance

On the Common App, there’s space to list 10 activities. If you’re a super-involved student, this may

mean having to weigh the importance of your clubs and cutting a few out of your application.

“It’s important to list things in order of importance and significant contribution,” says Donnaree

Wynter Grant, assistant director of admissions events at Northeastern University. For example, list

being the captain of your debate team for four years over a single semester you spent playing JV

volleyball. If you’re committed to an activity for longer, it’s probably more significant to you, and

therefore should be listed before activities that aren’t as important in your life.

2. Make sure your descriptions are clear

Grant also stresses that it’s important to describe your clubs clearly enough so someone who is reading

your application for the first time will understand what the activity entailed. “For example, don’t use

acronyms for titles,” she advises. “I won’t know what the ‘ABC club’ is unless you explain what it is

and your role within the club.” Make sure you spell out what the club is titled, what it involves and

what your position is within the club.

Michael Parcella, the assistant direction of undergraduate admissions at UMass Boston, gives some

similar advice. “Letting the college know more about how you were involved rather than just writing

down the name of a club is a good a start to best presenting your information,” he says.

Keep in mind that admissions officers look at hundreds of applications from all over the globe, so they

won’t always know what exactly you’re talking about. For example, don’t simply write “NHS” for the

name of the organization and check off the years you were involved. Instead, call the organization by

its full name, “National Honor Society,” give a brief description of what it is either in your own words

or from the organization’s website (if possible) and then specify if you held a leadership position (like

“president” or “treasurer”) and for which years of commitment. This will make it much easier for

admissions officers to read through your list and gather an idea of what kinds of activities you were

involved in.
