Pigments - Definition

• In cosmetic :

₋ “Skincare cosmetic” (white products)

₋ “Decorative cosmetic” (colored products) which contain pigments

o Tinted emulsion = foundations , mascaras

o Anhydrous (water-free) products = lipstick, stick foundation, powder (face, eyeshadow)…

• Pigments are colored, opaque solid powder and are insoluble in the media where they are in suspension

• Types of pigments:

₋ Organic pigments : Ca or Ba salts

₋ Inorganic pigments: iron oxide, (red, yellow, black), manganese violet, titanium oxide (white pigment)…

₋ Special pigments: perlescent agents to provide specific visual effects (luminosity/ brightness, iridescent…)

Page 7: T -L C P C SENSORIALITY & ACTIVITY

Pigments - Technical challenge examples

Constraints

• Stability (solid particules in suspension within a formula base):

₋ Compatibility of pigments with other ingredients of the formula

• Color rendering

₋ Homogeneous dispersion of pigments (in the product and during application)

• Manufacturing process

₋ Reproductibility/ adjustment of the color from batch to batch

₋ …..

Added values of our emulsifiers

• Phospholipids = Skin-identical molecules

‐ Biomimetic

‐ Bioaffinity / Biocompatible

‐ High tolerance

‐ Naturality

• Sophisticated skin feel : “Phospholipid Touch”

‐ Cool touch

‐ Slickness

• Active properties

‐ Restructuring

‐ Film-forming

=> 100% active base

• Improve penetration and bioavailability of active ingredient through skin => higher efficacy

‐ Non-tacky

‐ Soft

- Hydrating

- Soothing

Page 9: T -L C P C SENSORIALITY & ACTIVITY

Additional dispersing properties

• Phospholipids are known to:

‐ Reduce friction between the different components => Fluidity increase

‐ Prevent pure pigment aggregation => Better color rendering

‐ Allow better skin adhesion of pigments because of their compatibility with the skin's surface

Foundation - What is it?

• Skin-colored makeup product that is applied to the face to provide an even color to the complexion, to cover flaws and, sometimes, to change the natural skin tone

• Different textures: fluid, cream, balm, cream-to-powder, stick, solid…

• Different coverages: sheer, medium, full

• Different finishes: natural, matt, radiant, powdery, silky…

Page 13: T -L C P C SENSORIALITY & ACTIVITY

Foundation - What is it?

• 2 classes

‐ Emulsion foundation:

•Oil/Water (frequent)

•Water/Oil (rare)

•Water/Silicones (very frequent in Europe)

• Silicones/Water (frequent in US)

‐ « Hot-pour » foundation (=anhydrous products= water free)

Page 14: T -L C P C SENSORIALITY & ACTIVITY

Foundation - What is it?

• O/W emulsion foundations have not the same skin feel of W/Si or Si/W emulsions but they have other advantages:

₋ Could be less expensive

₋ Cooler

₋ Greener perception

Page 15: T -L C P C SENSORIALITY & ACTIVITY

Page 19: T -L C P C SENSORIALITY & ACTIVITY

Powder - What is it?

• Used alone for a radiant look or to set the foundation giving it a matte finish, and also to conceal small flaws or blemishes

• 2 types of powders

‐ Loose powder (main ingredients: talc, pigments)

‐ Pressed powder (same composition + oily liquid components helping cohesion)

Page 20: T -L C P C SENSORIALITY & ACTIVITY

My Beautifying Loose Powder

• Multi-active loose powder providing a natural-looking sun-kissed glow that bypasses the problematic of introducing liquid active ingredient in powder

• Skin care benefits:

- Shine control with Matipure™ Oil Free

- Natural tanning effect with Melactiva™

- Younger looking skin with Chronoline™

Page 21: T -L C P C SENSORIALITY & ACTIVITY

How to introduce active ingredients in powders?

• Active ingredients in powder form => easy introduction but limited choice of active ingredients as they are not in the most common form

• Active ingredients in liquid form => agglomeration risk with the powder

• Solution: “transform” liquid form into powder form through adsorption on microporous mineral matrix used as a carrier = Matipure™ Oil Free

• Matifying agent =>adsorption of excess sebum

« Acts as a sort of a sponge »

Page 22: T -L C P C SENSORIALITY & ACTIVITY

Introduction of active ingredients in powders

• Usually: ratio 1 g of active solution onto 1 g of Matipure™ Oil Free

• Active are gradually time released on contact with skin

• Technique adapted to any powder formulation pressed or loose (blush, eye shadow, face powder, bronzer, etc.) => makeup powders can claim active benefits!

• Adsorption is only possible on Matipure™ Oil Free version as the matrix of the standard version is already charged with the 2 treating oils
