What can I say about Get
In that has not already
been said? It was such a
success that it exceeded
lots of expectations
in many ways. It was
a truly incredible
and unforgettable
experience fully enjoyed
by thousands of young
people. I would like to
thank all who helped
in any way in the
organisation of this camp
and I mean that sincerely. I would especially like to thank
Wendy Williams for her great leadership of the organising
team. I also spared a thought for the ones who could not
attend this year for whatever reason. Let’s hope that no one
misses this experience again.
County Communications
I know that Tony Guy has been keeping you all informed via
iWISPA that our county communications are moving ahead
nicely. The latest news is that our new county website will be
up and running by the time you are reading this.
TA Gathering
Katrina has now held the irst County-wide Training Advisor gathering, which was well attended from a district coverage
point of view. However with more than 2000 adult full
members we know that many more TA’s are required. Please
do consider this rewarding role and talk to your Local Training
Manager should you wish to help out. You don’t need to have
loads of Scouting experience to do this ;-)
Bear Truth
Stacey has organised the irst Warwickshire Youth Forum. This is now known as “the Bear Truth”. This event is our irst step in encouraging and making it possible for young people
(16-25) to have a real input to shaping Scouting in our
County. You will hear much more about youth shaping as it
develops.
New Regional Commissioner
In the autumn we will have a new Regional Commissioner for
West Midlands, his name is Dan Potter. Dan is currently the
CC for Shropshire and will take up his position in October
after a handover period from Dave Bramston who has served
as Regional Commissioner for the past six years; please join
me in welcoming Dan and also in thanking Dave for his great
support for Warwickshire.
County Active Support
I was honoured to be asked by the County Active Support
(Fellowship branch), to make a presentation to Geoff and Margaret Russell, who after 20 years have retired from their
respective positions as chair and secretary. I would like to
thank them for their long service to AS and look forward to
still seeing them at future meetings and events.
Tony Guy MBE
Our very own Tony Guy has been made an MBE in the
Queen’s Birthday Honours in recognition of his long service
to young people in both Lancashire and Warwickshire where
amongst many other things; he is especially renowned for
starting up several gang shows, including WAGS. Tony’s
scouting career spans over 70 years and as you know is just
as active today as ever as in Warwickshire. Congratulations
Tony.
Your County Commissioner
Andy Walker
Last year we held our irst County Awards event to
say ‘well done’ to those
youth members who had
achieved the top award
in their section. We
also said well done to
a number of adults who
had received St. George’s
Day awards. We had a
great speaker and the
achievements of lots of
young people and adults
were acknowledged.
This November we have another opportunity to recognise
young people who have worked hard to gain our top awards.
We are particularly pleased when we can honour those who
achieved the highest award in Scouting – the Queen’s Scout
Award.
This is a lovely way for the County to honour our young
people in front of invited guests, a key note speaker and their
parents.
Leaders, via their District, are being asked to put those young
people forward who have achieved these awards so we can
invite them and their parents to the event. Please do your
best to make sure we receive the information and if in doubt
send it to Tony Guy away – he’d rather receive it twice than
have a young person miss out!
If you or a member of your team were honoured in the St.
George’s Day awards Tony would also like your information so
you too can be invited. Again please make sure that we are
able to invite all those who have been honoured by putting
forward their names. Have a great summer.

Get In was held on 15th – 17th June at Ragley Hall by kind
permission of 9th Marquess and Marchioness of Hertford.
Over 3,100 young people from all sections of Scouting in
Warwickshire, girls and boys ages 6 - 25, were able to take
part in activities such as climbing, kayaking, water zorbing,
drumming, 4x4 experience, Bush-craft, sailing and an
explosive mad science show. Zippos Circus managed to put
on a great show and seemed to entertain all ages. Scout
districts created 4 large zones with Food Zone, Make it Zone, Science & Technology Zone and Bush craft. The Food Zone featured Farm to Fork experience by Tesco, whilst the Bush-Craft involved Shelter Building, backs wood cooking and
knife skills. Highlights of the “Make It Zone” was the collage
of the Scouting emblem and GET IN logo made from bottle
tops and igloos made from milk bottles, whilst the National
Grid demonstrated generation of electricity and its many
uses.
Wayne Bulpitt, UK Chief Commissioner, attended site on
Saturday and spent the morning engaging with young
people. In the afternoon local guests including our president
Tim Cox, were escorted round the camp and were delighted
to see so many young people, having fun. 1,388 volunteers
made this event possible under the guidance of Wendy
Williams, the camp chief and her gold and silver teams. The
main comment from the weekend was –“when can we do this
again”

to join 30,000 other Scouts from around the globe.
Lucy Miller, Jonathan Miller and Edward Vernon are all local
Scout leaders from Nuneaton and have been selected to
spend nearly three weeks in Japan this summer.
The World Scout Jamboree takes place every four years and
brings together young people from over 162 countries in an
event aimed at 14-18 year old Scouts.
The aim of the experience is for the young Scouts to have
a once in a lifetime opportunity to build international
relationships, experience a variety of cultures and develop
themselves as global citizens.
The three adult volunteers will be going as part of the
International Service Team (IST) at the Jamboree and will
take up roles including running activities and looking after
the participants’ welfare.
Edward said: “It’s great to be able to help give more young
people the massive adventure that I had when I went to the
21st World Scout Jamboree that was in the UK.”
Jonathan said: “The climate is going to be really challenging
as it can get up to 35C and 95 per cent humidity, but I’m
ready to face it and help make the experience unforgettable
for the 30,000 Scouts from around the globe.”As part of
volunteering to work at the Jamboree, the three have had
to raise over £9,000 between them to be able to attend the
experience.
Nuneaton Lions Club and the Rotary Club of Nuneaton have
both given generous donations to help support the trip.

Rugby Explorer Scouts raced in the Shenington 24 hour pedal car race “What do you get if you cross Formula One racing with a bicycle? A great time! With a passion for cars and a need for
speed it certainly seemed a good move to sign up for taking
part in Round 2 of the British Pedal Car Championships 6-hour
endurance race.
As the Leicestershire early morning mist rose from the
Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground Race Track, the pedal car
and six pumped up and very well oiled 1st Kenilworth Scouts
arrived and were raring to go!
With the pedal car event starting in just over 2 hours, we set
about preparing for the 6-hour endurance race that lay ahead
over a gruelling 420 metre twisting and turning track.
At midday 24 pedal cars were ready to roll and with hearts
thumping and pedals to the loor the race began, each Scout taking it in turns to do as many laps of the track as humanly
possible. It soon came to light that handling and controlling
the pedal car, trafic management and driver skills would take a front seat with aerodynamics and outright top speed irmly securing a rear seat.
Having given the automatic lap counter a good run for its
money, our team narrowly avoiding any collisions the 1st
Kenilworth Scouts gave their all; strength, determination,
courage and downright craziness given at 200%!
Our team proudly pedaled into 2nd place in their class

what had been a magniicent day, a great team builder and something that would be remembered for ever!”

Nuneaton District Scouts at Carnival Over 50 young people, leaders and helpers turned out on a
glorious day to join in the fun of carnival day. With the theme
of the day being the magic of carnival and seeing Nuneaton
Carnival celebrate its 85th year it was only right that the
Scouts get involved.
Dressed in bright colours, with hats, lags and balloons, Nuneaton District Scouts won best in category for walkers.
Marcus Jones the local MP presented a trophy and rosette to
mark the achievement.
All the money collected is distributed to local charities
around the borough and to good and worthy causes. This
its in nicely with the start of A Million Hands and the Community Impact Project. As a District we intend to carry on
this by getting involved in more events around the borough
and helping local people. Our next event is Armed Forces Day incorporating Ghurkha 200 on the 27th June where we will be
serving refreshments.

irst time in 100 years, for refurbishment. In
June 2015, the bells were
returned to the church
after restoration. While the
bells were on the ground,
they needed guarding.
The Beavers followed a trail, solved the clues, made bell ginger
biscuits for afternoon church teas, and slept overnight in the
church. After making pancakes for breakfast they visited the
bell tower, up the steep narrow stairs, before heading home,
tired but, to quote one of them, after an ‘awesome’ time.

County Fishing at Wolvey.
Sunday June 14th saw the annual Scout County ishing competition at Five Ways Lakes near Wolvey, a total of fourteen Scouts took part. Competitors were greeted with
cooler, overcast and sometimes wet conditions.
Large numbers of maylies and buzzers were seen hatching off and this saw some ish preoccupied on naturals rather than chasing lures, which is all part of the competition.
The best areas for ishing seemed to be near to top
pegs as these were where
the largest ish were caught although almost every
peg got a bite or two,
which shows that the ish are currently well spread
throughout the lake.
The 14 anglers landed
around 50 ish for an excellent catch average
of just under four ish per angler although one or two
only caught trees. A good
number of ish were over two pound in weight with
the best in the competition looking to tip the scales at over
6lb. The winning Scout coming from Warwick District this year
was Ethan with 16 ish for 14lb 1oz., Nuneaton District inished second with third place going to Rugby.
We are hoping to expand next year so if Groups have got extra
equipment we would appreciate being allowed to borrow it as
we had to turn seven Scouts away due to lack of equipment...
Nuneaton District Beavers held their sports day On Sunday 12th July at the Pingles Running Track thanks to
the Nuneaton Harriers. Over 70 Beavers had lots of fun in the
sun trying their hand at Athletics, some for the irst time. They all completed the standing long jump, throwing a howler, a
50m sprint and a 300m run. The Beavers all tried so hard and
showed real sportsmanship so we thought they all deserved
a medal! District Commissioner Sam Marshall was on hand to
present everyone with their medal when we had inished and the all the Beavers got a well-deserved round of applause from
the parents, adults and leaders who were very proud of their
efforts.
