THIS IS USDOMINATES2012 BUCKET

2 St Barth Weekly n°246

Rain, rain go away wasthe motto on the firstday of the 2012 St

Barth Bucket, Friday, March 23,when the skies over the islandremained overcast and rather wetall day. In spite of these soakingrains, there was sun for the rest ofthe weekend, allowing the fleetof 47 sailboats (45 completed thethree days) to race under goodconditions, with winds of 10 to15 knots.

With the largest Bucket fleet todate—an incredible array of

boats over 100 feet in length–race organizers decided to add afourth category, Les Mademoi-selles des Mers, in addition to theexisting classes. The winners ofthe four individual classes are:Parsifal III for Les Grand Dames;Lady B for Les Mademoiselles(also second overall); Mari-ChaIII for Les Gazelles; and theoverall winner of the race, the42-meter Holland Jachtbouw-built yacht, This Is Us, toppingLes Elegantes.

As a prologue to the actual Buck-et, with its three days of racing, there was a very special event onThursday, March 22, with thefour magnificent J-boats in the

Bucket racing against each other, almost like a mini-Americas Cuprace, for which these boats wereoriginally designed. Endeavourtook top honors over Hanuman,Ranger, and Velsheda.

“I would like to thank the other 46boats in the Bucket for theirincredible sportsmanship,” saidthe owner of This Is Us, DirkCavens. His captain, Robin Winn, who has been with This Is us forthe past 18 months, added: “Everyday was fantastic, the Bucket hasan amazing setup and gets betterevery year, they work so hard andthere is an amazing ambiance.”The dominant victory by This IsUs included first place wins on

days two and three of theBucket, an outstandingachievement consideringthe level of competitionrepresented by the boatsand the crews at thisevent.

Lady B, a handsome 45-meter Dubois yacht builtat Vitters Shipyards, won the first day’saround-the-island race, coming in third and sixthon subsequent days for awell-deserved secondplace berth in the Buck-et, as well as the top spotfor the 10 Dubois yachtsin the race in the newMademoiselles class.Third place went to BlueToo, a 34-meter AlloyYachts ketch, which alsotook second place in LesElegantes class, justbehind This Is Us.

The “Escargot Cup,” anhonor awarded to theslowest boat (althoughthe actual can of snailswas not returned by lastyear’s winner) went toBarracuda, a 50-meterPerini Navi yacht, builtfor comfort rather thanspeed perhaps… (a fulllist of winners and

awards at www.bucke-tregattas.com).

Each year the Bucketmakes a contribution to aworthy island project, aspart of its commitmentto the community ofSaint Barth. This year, they donated 23,500euros toward the renova-tion of the traditionalCaribbean house nearthe Catholic Church inLorient, where theisland’s nuns have lived. This money will helpcomplete the work sothey can move back totheir home.

The Bucket organizationhas grown over the pastfew years, with PeterCraig of Premiere Rac-ing serving as race direc-tor with Bucket commit-tee members Ian Crad-dock and Tim Laugh-ridge lending a hand(Hank Halsted wasunable to attend thisyear), as well as JimTeeters, who supervisesthe yacht rating system.A crew of volunteers andthe staff of the Port ofGustavia also make surethings run as smoothly

as possible for the hundreds of people whocome to Saint Barth to participate in the Bucket, and orchestrate the movement of the fleet inand out of the port.

In spite of the rainy start, and a few accidents(one sailor was hospitalized and the largest boatin the fleet, the 67-meter Baltic Yacht, Hetairos, hit some rocks and had to withdraw), the 2012Bucket was a fabulous event. Especially interms of safety for such a big fleet of really bigboats, and in putting on a great show of nauticalprowess, a treat for those who sail as well asthose who watch from the shore!

The Saint Barth InternationalProperty Owners Associa-tion met on March 15,

2012 at Le Massai restaurant, withspecial guest Ernest Brin, harbordirector and port security officerin St. Barth. Brin gave a brief his-tory of the port, noting that theinhabitants of the island havealways been attracted by theocean, and in the 1950’s-60’s,about 10 local owners ofschooners/sloops carried freight toand from the island, which con-tributed to the island’s economicgrowth. In the 1970’s, the portbecame a favorite stop for boatsfrom the States and Europe, and inthe early ‘80’s, the local govern-ment took over the managementof the port after they got theauthorization to do so fromGuadeloupe, which had jurisdic-

tion until that time. In 1983, thecommercial port was built in Pub-lic moving it from the inner har-bor of Gustavia, where the mainpleasure boat dock and portoffices are now.

Brin also provided some statistics:11 people work at the port; in2011, 862 cargo ships called at theport; two oil tankers arrive onceevery 10-12 days, one for dieseland gasoline for cars, and the sec-ond tanker with fuel for the elec-tric company, EDF.Brin noted some of the challengesthe port faces: lack of space forstorage and discharge of contain-ers, and parking for workers at thecommercial port, which will soonadd an additional 1,200 sq. metersfor storage. He also added that theisland has decided not to allow

cruise ships with more than 2,000passengers to dock in the harbor.

Brin has worked for the port sinceMay of 1989; for eight years asassistant director, stepping intothe top spot in December 2009.Since becoming Director he hasimplemented such changes asallowing boats to register online. He concluded by inviting every-one to come see him at the portoffices: “My door is alwaysopen,” he said.

The final meeting of the organiza-tion for 2012 will be held on April12 at Le Massai at 5:30pm. Atthat time elections of officers andnew board members will takeplace, and it will be the last meet-ing of Larry O’Donnell’s presi-dency.

He doesn’t walk onwater, he flies. AlexandreCaizergues, kite-surfingchampion originally fromPort-Saint-Louis duRhône in France, added anew record to his listwhen he “flew” betweenSaint Barth and SaintMartin in 44 minutes onThursday, March 22.Bruno Strocka, who hadcovered the distance in50 minutes and 10 sec-onds on February 3,2011, held the priorrecord. As for settingrecords, Caizergues cannever get enough. Hewas the first man in theworld to break the kite-surfing barrier of 100km/h (53.99 knots), with

a speed of 100.19 km/h(54.1 knots), on October12, 2010, in Nambia. This record only lasted afew days before Ameri-can Rob Douglas broke itwith a speed of 103.06km/h (55.65 knots), mak-ing him the fastest kite-surfer out there. YetCaizergues is always upfor a new challenge, which led him to leaveGrand Cul-de-Sac at11am last Thursday, from an imaginary start-ing line between Tortueand the point of AnseMaréchal, and reach Ori-ent Bay in Saint Martinjust under 45 minutes lat-er, covering a distance ofalmost 30 kilometers. “A

month ago when Ireserved my plane tick-ets, the trade winds werehigher than 20 knots inSaint Barthélemy,”recalls Caizergues. “Butthis week, the wind wasmuch lighter. At the start,I had trouble leaving thelagoon, and for ten min-utes with a breeze of 15knots, it was touch andgo. I even consideredheading back,” he says, over a full breakfast onthe terrace of Le Serenotwo days after the event, chatting with Hugo Lat-tard, editor-in-chief of LeJournal de Saint Barth.“Finally the wind stabi-lized at around 17 knotswith high seas, as fore-cast, and I made it,” headds with a big smile. As

far as his gear, Caizer-gues had a prototypelong-distance F ONEboard under his feet, anda 150 sq ft Bandit 5 kitesail. Caizergues is one ofthe rare kite-surfers in theworld to earn his livingfrom his sport, and willbe in Leucate along thesouth-west coast ofFrance on April 7-15 forthe 12th edition of Mon-dial du Vent. Here hewill find all the heavy-weights of the sport aswell as the best wind-sur-feurs. But Caizergues isalready dreaming ofcoming back to SaintBarth next year to betterhis “flying” time to SaintMartin: “40 minutes, with winds of 20 knots isdoable,” he predicts.
