Among tile many attractions tha~ are being booked, special mention should be made of Prof. Chandler who gives a 65-foot higll diving exlfibition that was the sensation of Coney ls- htnd last year. The great Sidonia, advertised as the world's greatest comedy wire artist, will give a trick wire walking exhibition during wllich he introduces six complete character cllanges While perfornling on the wire. A number of improvements are contemplated and Father Crowley hopes to realize at least $300 from the day's receipts. Despite the intense heat )f t, he day a large crowd was present, and from a linancial standpoint the festival was a great success. The wheel of fortune was well patronized, while many tick- ets were sold on a dinner set ~and a dining room table ratlle. A slot ma- chine was also pressed into service.: Meals were served by the ladies of the church, and the refreshment stands did a hustling business throughout tile day. In the evening a dance was held in bhc ball, at whiel~ at gold ring contcsl~ - was witnessed. ~lusic was furnished during tlle afternoon and evening by the Glass family. Fully 300 people were in attendam'.e during the afternoon: in tlle evening the number was considerably in- creased. There were a number of our citizens present in the afternoon. IH[Y rl[[[ S0R[ Akronand ~orth BranchBave BiS. covered ilow It |iappene~ at the Base Ball lonr.ey. It is decidedly amusing to listen to the childish prattle that is sometimes set up in defense oia defeated base ball team: 115 always comes from towns that want the eartt~ and a lot of its fullness, and whenever things do not come their way, it doesn't take wise men long todiscover that a fraud has been perpetrated. The result of the base ball tourney at, Kingston has occasioned some vig- orous comments from the defeated townsof AlCrOn and North Branch. Both towns attribute the toss 0f tam game to averse circumstances, in- trigue and evil-minded umpires. The Akron Argus finds up(m investigation that the only tlfings that prexented," Akron from winning tile laurels were the mud and a bad umpire. Of course onr boys ratimrenjoyed playing ball in six inches of mud, and did not seem to mind it in the least. Since the event is past we don't mind tell- ing the secret. We arranged for rain on tllat particular £]ay just because we knew it would insure our success. The Argus has further discovered that Akron pounded Buckley out of tim box. So sorry to hear it! Of course wc did not know. The score card re- cords six shut-outs for Akron, but who cares anything about a score card that tells a tale of 13 to 6 ? Thell the North Branch "Gazette!' comes forward to explain mat.ters, and intimates that North Branch lost the game by 1:eason of a "sneak" deal to which Cass City and one Slaght, a twirler from Detroit, were principals. In short, the Gazette feels sure that Cass City paid good money for her victory. So far as money is concerned our team might have been able to bt{y outthe North Branch aggregation, but as a matter of principle, it pre- ferred to win the ball game m~ merit. There is no excuse for this wide- mouthed howl, for up to the seventi~ inning when Cass City circled the bases I'o1:. six sCP ~:gs,.No ['.tJ.l_[[Fa0.Ch '~fld only three half-earned runs. It is the bad thongll that the I)e- troitpi~chercouldn'twin that game. We believe he made a gallant try, but heeould no~ win out alone. The rest of the team was too busy kicking to play base ball. But we must throw the mantle of chanty over the intimated insult. It's hard to takedefeat grace- fully. Every fair minded man be- lieves, however, tlmt our boys won the game on fair and square playing. Come, brother, gel, out in ,God's free sunshine, breathe a few deep drawn breaths, and forget your nightmare about N ortl~ Branch's Waterloo at Kingston. Come dowlt and get ~'points" on our game with the ~Royal Tiger Giants '~ on the 10th. Tllen tell us how the Giants lust the game. M. P. CONFERENCE. The closipg session of the M. P. conference at Yale was held on the afternoon ()f Sept. 3rd when the min- isterial appointments were read. Tlle appointments in this vicinity were: $ Care, R. lZutledge; Wahjamega, G. Mikel; Bad Axe, to be supplied; Fair- grove, A. 5:Iofat; Kinde, A. A. Phelps; Gagetown, Jolm II. tIohnes: North Branch, J. W. Poeilly; Nayville, E. W. Cooper. DELIVEI~Y HOIR~SE IlCAN ARAY. About thirty of the Cass City young people hied themselves to Pinney's re- sort last~onday for the purpose of enjoying a picnic in the pretty grove which surrounds "Forest Home." The day was fortunately well suited to the occasion, and by noon the last straggler had arrive~l at, tlle picnic ground. As soon as the well provi- sioned lnnch baskets had been depos- ited in the cottage, wimre a number of the young ladies busied themselves preparing dinner, and the horses had been turned loose, the young men started in to see who could have the most fun and still save his neck for future reference. Wbat with playing ball and tishing the ball out of the river every Ùteller minute, pitching quoits for a cham- pionship record ~01icll was finally won by Itarry Pinney and l~oy Crosby; hm-dle racing, high jumping and boat- ing tlm afternoon soon passed. Even the dozen or more horses considered it a day oir and gamboled about among tlmtrees likea Buffalo Bill's show turned loose. After eating such a hearty dinner, however, the King found it expedient to rest in his royal hammock which soon pre{ented a picture of content- ment and solid Comfort. But since every doc~or's motto is "Patients and Long Suffering, ~' we cannot blame him for remaining inactive when hi~ wholesome repast would have made exertion painful. When the sun had sunk beneath the western horiz(m and tim katydids were chirping their evening song, the weary picnickers captured their horses after a merry chase, and started for home. Even the bean's talk(bean stale:) was whispered in the ears of the corn, and the potatoes! eyes lllled with dew drops as the sound of song and laughter died away in the distance. The Imppy day was ended and Cass City again received her own. MICHIGAN STATE FA|R. The premium list for the state fair, which is to be held at Pontiac Sept. 23 to 27; is being widely circulated. K. L. Buttertield, who has tlle P.O. & N. advertising iield in hand, gave the Chronicle a half dozen copies nf tt{efair anmm~/cemenbs ;whicli may be had uPO n application. Other copies may be secured by addressin~ the secretary, I. II. Butteriield at, Pontiac. Prospects for a large enthusiastic attendance at the l?0ntiac fair are very reassuring. The railroads have promised the best of service, and every indication .gives assurance of a most successful fair. At tl~e Monday night session of the village council all the councilmen were present, except trustee Schenck. After the usual preliminaries tlm re- port o£ commissioner Straube, involv- ing several hundred dollars, was pre- sented and accepted. The total re- ceipts for the month of ,lu]y were smnmarized in tills report as follows: For electric lig b ts $183:94 For water service 34.2,i Rec'd for old copper 4.,t0 Total recei pts $222.58 It was moved and carried flint the committee on general improvement, acting in conjunction with commis- sioner Ihtmsey, hereafter determine the plans for the laying of pipes for water works. Anotller carload of ce- ment was ordered. I)r. Deming, our health ollicer, made a few remarks upon the sanitary condition of tile town. Engineer Rogers, representative of Riggs & Sherman, civil and consult- ing engineers of Toledo, Ohio, again brougllt before tim co(incil the ques- tion of a ~drainage and sewerage sys- tem. Mr. Rogers olIered to draw up plans and specifications for both the drainage and sanitary sewerage for $260. It will be remembered that the company proposed some time ago to draw up this survey for $355.00. Thereduetinn is due to,. 15he fact that Mr. Rogers is already familiar with ttle general lay of ttle ground in and about Cass City and is able to es- timate probable costs more accurate- Iv. His offer was accepted and he be- gan his work of surveying Tuesday morning, in the vicinity cf the depot which will probably represen~ tim proposed outlet. 5'[. Sheridan is deeply interested in secm'ing a sanitary system of sewer- age. The eess-pools back of the hotel are a constant menace to good health, and sanitary drainage alone can rem- edy the evil. Mr. Sheridan has liber- ally offered to payS100 toward the payment of the city survey provided the system is put in this fall. No delinite action, further than the drawing up of plans of survey for botll systems, has been taken. Every newly organized band lids a sorry time getting on its feet and (mr band is ll(~ excepti()n. Perseverance and good training, however, have made the Cass City band an organizabi(m of which our village may well be proud The band is made up of a gentle- manly lot of boys who llaVE ever re- sponded willingly wlmn called upon to furnish music. Their many im- promptu serenades have been duly appreciated by the peoplenf our town, and it is wi~lFsatist'acti(m that we note their growing efficiency. R is safe to say that tile band will be in lirst class condition by fair time, for the boys are practicing faithfully twice a week. During the fair week they will llave an opportunity to dem- onstrate their ability, and at the same time earn money for the perfecting of their orga n izatio n. Frank Lenzner deserves great cred- it, for the progress which the band has accomplished under his skillful lead- ership. Mr. Lenzner is eoniident that the band will be perfectly competent to furnish first class music at tim Cass City fair. May our band live long and prosper. - - - ® . I t is decidedly amusing to listen to the chi ldish pra t t l e t ha t is sometimes set up in defense o i a defeated base ball t e a m : 115 always comes from towns t h a t wan t the eartt~ and a lot of its fullness, and whenever things do not come the i r way, it doesn ' t take wise men long todiscover t h a t a fraud has been perpet ra ted .

The resul t of the base ball tourney at, Kings ton has occasioned some vig- orous comments from the defeated t o w n s o f AlCrOn and North Branch. Both towns a t t r i b u t e the toss 0f tam game to averse circumstances, in- t r igue and evil-minded umpires. The Akron Argus finds up(m invest igat ion t h a t the only t l f ings t h a t prexented," Akron from winning tile laurels were the mud and a bad umpire. Of course onr boys r a t imren joyed playing ball in six inches of mud, and did not seem to mind it in the least. Since the event is past we don ' t mind tell- ing the secret. We arranged for rain on t l lat pa r t i cu la r £]ay just because we knew it would insure our success. The Argus has fu r ther discovered t ha t Akron pounded Buckley out of tim box. So sorry to hear it! Of course wc did not know. The score card re- cords six shut-outs for Akron, bu t who cares a n y t h i n g about a score card t ha t tells a tale of 13 to 6 ?

Thell the N o r t h Branch "Gazet te! In short, the Gazet te feels sure t h a t Cass City paid good money for her victory. So far as money is concerned our team migh t have been able to bt{y o u t t h e N o r t h Branch aggregation, bu t as a m a t t e r of principle, it pre- ferred to win the ball game m~ meri t . The re is no excuse for this wide- mouthed howl, for up to the seventi~ inning when Cass City circled the bases I'o1:. six sCP ~:gs, .No ['.tJ.l_ [[Fa0.Ch '~fld only three half-earned runs.

Every fair minded man be- lieves, however, t lmt our boys won the game on fair and square playing. OUT FOR A LARK. About t h i r t y of the Cass City young

people hied themselves to P inney ' s re- sort l a s t ~ o n d a y for the purpose of enjoying a picnic in the pre t ty grove which surrounds "Fores t H o m e . " The day was fo r tuna te ly well sui ted to the occasion, and by noon the last s t raggler had arrive~l at, tlle picnic ground. As soon as the well provi- sioned lnnch baskets had been depos- ited in the cottage, wimre a number of the young ladies busied themselves prepar ing dinner , and the horses had been turned loose, the young men s tar ted in to see who could have the most fun and still save his neck for fu tu re reference.

W b a t wi th playing ball and tishing the ball out of the river every Ùteller minute , p i tch ing quoits for a cham- pionship record ~01icll was finally won by I ta r ry P inney and l~oy Crosby; hm-dle racing, high j ump ing and boat- ing t lm af ternoon soon passed. Even the dozen or more horses considered it a day oir and gamboled a b o u t among t l m t r e e s l i k e a Buffalo Bill 's show tu rned loose.

Af te r ea t ing such a hear ty dinner, however, the King found it expedient to rest in his royal hammock which soon pre{ented a p ic ture of content - m e n t and solid Comfort. Bu t since every doc~or's mot to is " P a t i e n t s and Long Suffering, ~' we cannot blame him for remain ing inact ive when hi~ wholesome repast would have made exert ion painful.

W h e n the sun had sunk benea th the wes tern horiz(m and tim katydids were ch i rp ing the i r evening song, the weary picnickers captured the i r horses af ter a merry chase, and s ta r ted for home. Even the bean's t a l k ( b e a n stale:) was whispered in the ears of the corn, and the potatoes! eyes lllled wi th dew drops as the sound of song and l augh te r died away i n the distance. The Imppy day was ended and Cass City again received her own.

E n g i n e e r Rogers, represen ta t ive of Riggs & Sherman, civil and consult- ing eng ineers of Toledo, Ohio, again brougl l t before tim co(incil the ques- t ion of a ~drainage and sewerage sys- tem. Mr. Rogers olIered to draw up plans and specifications for both the dra inage and sani tary sewerage for $260. I t will be r emembered t h a t the company proposed some t ime ago to draw up this survey for $355.00.

His offer was accepted and he be- gan his work of surveying Tuesday morning, in the vicini ty cf the depot which will probably represen~ tim proposed out le t .

5'[. Sher idan is deeply in teres ted in secm'ing a sani tary system of sewer- age. The eess-pools back of the hotel are a cons tan t menace to good hea l th , and sani tary dra inage alone can rem- edy the evil. Mr. Sher idan has liber- ally offered to payS100 toward the paymen t of the c i ty survey provided the system is pu t in th is fall. No del ini te action, f u r t h e r than the drawing up of plans of survey for botll systems, has been taken.

PET ANIFIAL5.

I t has somet imes been argued t h a t the keeping of pet animals is ()ne way r edeve lop tile humane insbincI.S of people in generall L ike o~her prac- tices, however, this one is good only when i15 is not ~bnse(1. as i15 frequent,ly is. When one co|]siders the nttnli)or of miserable l i t t le l)easts yearly trap- pod, captured, and 1)red in cages for tile a m u s e m e n t of mankind, iL seems as i | ' solne bet tor metho(l ~)I' amuse- men t migh t be devised.

Of course, the re are people who make friends a n d compani()ns of their pel;s, and althou,dh nobody can l)e :~t~- solutely cerl:ain about animM i)sychol- ogy, i t may be that, t, lm (h)g, h(wse or bird derives an amouu~ of pleasure from contac t with the superior mind which n l o r e t , l l a n l ' e p a y s ' f s l i c l o s s ()f

rreedoln. In the case of a highly broil dog or a saddle-h()rse it is almost cer- ta in t h a t this is so. But 12lose are in the minor i ty when the. whole number of domest ica ted animals is considered.

In the lirst place ib is cer ta inly cruel ty to take a wihl c rea ture ou~ ()1' i ts na tu ra l e n v i r o n m e n t and place i t in a cage where il~ can have lit,i;le ex- ercise, no na tn ra l companionship, aud o f t e n n o sui table food. I t is ent i re ly possible for people living in a count ry town or small village to ~ame squi rrCs, b i r d s a n d other wild thin~s wiLhouli in t he least in te r fe r ing witl~ the i r freedom, if they choose t o use a l i t t le pat ience. Most wild animMs will come where they are not: a l'raM of being hur t . T h e red squirrel can l)e coaxed be come from h i s h o l e a l id eat corn from the hand of a human being. and birds of all kinds are easily tamed in the same way. One who has once enjoyed the de l igh t of winning t,he confidence of tile wood-foll~ will never again wish _to keep any of t hem in a. cage.

The a n i m a l w h i c l l is bred for ~he purpose of domest icat ion, like t,he lap-dog, the Pers ian cat,, the whit~e mouse, or tile canary, is UStlally in- ferior in in te l l igence to the wild ani- mal, for the very good reason th~l~ i~ does not need as IYiilC]I b r a i n s 15o t)(', fed, pe t ted and put to sleep as %,o get one s l iv ing in the midst of a t h rong of enemies. '±'here Fire two ways, however, in which the keeping (ff tl~ese animals can be made really beneficial to chi ldren and adults; (me is by mak ing companions of them, developing all tim intel l igence IJmy have, and the ottmr is by choosing" pets of a sort whose intel l igence is al- ready considerable. Ol~ildren should be encouraged to be kind to the i r pet, s and to make friends wi th l~hem, and this cannot be d~)ne unless l.]lc, rc is intel l igence on the o~her side. I f the comfort and well-being of the animal is s tudied it, will be good for the. nms- te r as well as the 1)ol;. for a l t ru ism general ly works in thai; way l)ub (.;ll~- d o r w i l l c o m p e l m o s t p c o p l e l o admil t h a t noth ing ~)f ~lle kind is usually done.
