WELCOME BACK! Prayer The conclusion of our Gospel last week was encouragement to pray, spoken by Jesus, preached in the apostles’ first homilies, and then applied by Matthew for the needs of his community. “if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father.” While a powerful message in mature prayer, taken simplistically and literally, it can lead to frustration and even anger at God. Hey, we agreed winning the lottery would be a good thing, and prayed together, but these numbers are still losers!” Or more seriously, We prayed so hard for Mom to recover from the cancer, but it never happened!” Prayer we assess to be unanswered prayer can be very painful, and even shake our faith. But before giving up, as always, looking beyond the isolated quote in the Gospel can make a difference. The next line from last week’s Gospel was: “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” In our prayer, were we just asking for what, in our human wisdom, we thought would be best, or did we first center in Jesus, gathering in his name? Often the Lord can help us see things in an entirely different light. Going home to God can be a healing. For Jesus’ clearest teaching in prayer, we have only to look to the Lord’s Prayer. It focuses on God, and God’s will, not our trying to tell God what we think would be best. Yet for many, prayer is more the latter than the former. It is natural when we are a beginning pray-er to think we need to let God know what we want. Hopefully over time, we learn to ask and hear where God is leading us, and how God is leading us into the divine will. A challenging, but important question: am I praying the same way I did when I was a child? Do I still see God the same way I did when I was a child, or has my praying and my relationship with God grown to a more mature understanding, and a deeper prayer life? Perhaps the course on prayer this Fall could make a world of difference! How about Mass? Do I still come and experience it the same way I did as a teen, or have I grown to a deeper understanding and appreciation? The Mass in Slow Motion may be a big help in that regard. Life-long faith formation isn’t just a nice churchy slogan. It is the only way to make sure our faith and our prayer life is equal to the challenges we face in life. May God grant us all the humility to realize we are still learners, and the desire to keep learning and growing. Check out the opportunities inside, and see which will keep you growing, learning, and being transformed by God’s grace. Peace Fr. WELCOMING THE WORD

A Great Teacher

Jesus was not the first great teacher of God’s people.

Abraham taught by example. Moses left a body of

teaching. The psalmists taught through song prayers.

The prophets taught through oracles and action. Jesus Ben

Sirach’s career was teaching: imparting wisdom to the

young. The book of his teaching, compiled by a grandson,

is filled with wisdom. (It is even classified as Wisdom

Literature.) Todays 1st reading is a perfect example, the

fruit of deep reflection on the law and tradition. Learn to

forgive, and experience forgiveness; let go of anger if you

wish to be healed. Remember your last days. This is truth,

pure and simple. Wrath and anger are hateful things – Do

we know it when we see it? But when caught up in our

own wrath and anger, we are blind to just how hateful and

destructive it is. Sirach, please help us see the truth you

offer, and help us learn to live by it!

Unlike St. Paul

So often, Paul offers sentences that are really paragraphs.

He isn’t remembered primarily for crisp, succinct teaching

or insight. But our passage today is a powerful exception.

With three clearer sentences, he makes a point that is

essential to Gospel joy: We are always the Lord’s. In

coming to birth, living our life, in going home to God,

in whatever our circumstance, we are always the Lord’s.

What a gift to know that deep inside!!

Turning Things Around

Ever hear of Lamech? Revenge was a deep seated reality

in the world of the Old Testament, and still has a grip in

many cultures today. Lamech, Cain’s son, spouted off with

arrogance: if dad (Cain) was to be avenged 7 times, I

shall take revenge 77 fold. Throughout the Bible, the

importance of mercy and forgiveness grows ever clearer.

Jesus offers the final word in today’s Gospel. Revenge

77 times? No, forgiveness 77 times. Revenge has no place

in the heart of a Christian. To truly follow Jesus, mercy

and forgiveness are our mission. It is as hard a sell today

as it was in Jesus’ day. But when you see true forgiveness

and mercy, when you taste it, you realize just how sweet

mercy, is truly satisfying the hunger of the soul, while

revenge is bitter, and eventually starves the soul to death.

1st Reading: Sirach 27:30 — 28:7

Wrath and anger are hateful things

2nd Reading: Romans 14:7 – 9

We are the Lord’s in life and in death

Gospel: Matthew 18:21 – 35

Should you not have pity?

OUR GIFT TO GOD LAST WEEKEND THIS WEEK’S TITHING WILL SUPPORT ST. ANDREW’S FOOD CUPBOARD

NEXT WEEK’S TITHING WILL SUPPORT HOPE HALL Established in 1994 by sister Diana Dolce, SSJ, Hope Hall School provides an opportunity for “at-risk” or “educationally stranded” children to become successful lifelong learners. Serving students in grades 3 through 12 from 19 school districts in the Greater Rochester Area, Hope Hall’s nurturing, non-threatening, creative atmosphere encourages students to take risks in learning and helps them reverse the cycle of academic failure. Hope Hall provides a multi-sensory, supportive learning environment for students with Auditory Processing Disorders, Autism, ADD, and ADHD. They have grown to serve approx. 160 students in grades 3-12 and proudly boast a 100% high school graduation rate with stu-dents who are prepared for post-secondary schools, training pro-grams, and careers. Hope Hall’s collaborative approach to learning connects faculty, staff and families as team members in a community of learning. Students previously considered to be educationally “at risk” experience academic success, not only at Hope Hall, but also in high school and beyond. Hope Hall School is a private, non-sectarian, not-for-profit, 501(c)(3), school designed for students with special learning needs who consistently experience frustration in the traditional classroom set-ting. Hope Hall is committed to the belief that when students are giv-en respect and enough time in a supportive, multi-sensory learning environment, they can become successful learners. Hope Hall, locat-ed at 1612 Buffalo Rd., Rochester, NY 14624, is a private, non-sectarian, not-for-profit, 501(c)(3), school. Learn more at www.hopehall.org.

On-line Collection

Month-to-Date

$35,807.30

Please be generous in this week’s second collection for the Catho-lic Campaign for Human Development. In the United States, one in six people lives in poverty. With this collection you support pro-grams that address the causes of poverty and provide a sustainable future for those who are struggling across the country. In addition, 25 percent of funds collected remains in our diocese to fund local anti-poverty projects. Please prayerfully consider how you can support this collection and work on the margins. More information about the Catholic Campaign for Human Development can be found at www.usccb.org/cchd/collection.

I Can Give a Couple of Hours Without our faithful money counters, how would the collection ever get prepared to go to the bank? How would we be able to send contri-butions statements out at the end of the year? Recall when St. Paul wrote that the body has many parts? Our counters are a very important part of the Body of Christ! Several have either retired after years of service, or moved out of the area. Is this a way you could give back to the Lord for his goodness to you, contributing a few hours of your time? It need not be a long-term commitment. Try it, see if this might be a way to give back. Pray about it, and consider giving Fr. Bob or Laurie Martin, our Finance Director, a call to find out more about how it works (contact information on page 10 of this bulletin).

Thank you for supporting our 47th Annual Corn

Sale last weekend to benefit St. Damien Pediatric

Hospital located near Port-Au-Prince, Haiti &

founded by Fr./Dr. Rick Frechette. We raised

$2,755.00 plus a $1,000.00 donation. When you

shop at Powers Market on Marsh Rd., thank the

Powers family for growing and donating the corn

pro bono for our sale.

Thank you for your generous

support of our 2nd collection

last weekend for Hurricane

Harvey victims. $6,988.00 was

donated. (Includes $1,000.00 from the Emergen-

cy Fund.) This will provide pastoral and rebuild-

ing support to impacted dioceses in the massive

recovery effort to assist victims.

CYO REGISTRATION TO OPEN IN-SEPTEMBER

CYO Athletics If anyone is interested in registration for CYO Athletics as an athlete, keep your eyes peeled for updates in the middle of September. There will be registration on our website starting in mid-September and it will go until the second weekend in October. We will have in-person registrations sometime in September following all the masses. Keep on the lookout for emails and updates.

CYO Coaches We need Coaches! All Coaches will have to be background checked and CASE trained. Please contact Leila Kaczmarek for more details at [email protected] or 586-5675 Ext. 234.

Philosophy Our philosophy at St. Louis is that athletics and recreation are important to the well-being of the person. Sports and competition can help us to grow into a better person, but we must always put people before com-petition. We do not have any team that requires making cuts or limiting the participation of many in favor of the few. We recognize the competitive world our young people are raised in, and we believe that our Church must be a safe haven where kids and youth are free to play and enjoy, and where families can refresh.

CYO Basketball Pope Paul VI said: "Sports well understood and practiced … contribute to the development of the whole person because it demands generous effort, careful self-control, mastery and respect for others, complete commitments and team spirit. These values contribute to the building of tomorrow's well-ordered society which we have characterized as the 'civilization of love'.” It is with great pleasure that our parish provides constructive opportunities that lead to positive youth develop-ment through CYO Athletic Services. It is our mission to provide a program that emphasizes the proper ideas of ethical conduct and sportsmanship. We want to offer all children in the parish and school the opportunity to develop their spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being as a team player. We emphasize that an athletic event is "just a game" and we provide coaches and adult role models who instill the proper respect, courtesy, and leadership that our young people need and deserve. Together, the parish, young St. Louis players, and all our generous volunteers will work together to build a program we are proud of and is worthy of the St. Louis name!!!

CYO Basketball Seeks Players From Grade 3rd to 12th! St. Louis has a terrific program for youth in grades 3 through 12 for boys and girls. The CYO Basketball Program starts in October and runs into February. It is a program whereby teams will play other parishes throughout the Diocese. This is a program primarily for parishioners and St. Louis School families. Non-parishioners are allowed to play when the need arises to round out a team, and may make up only 1/3 of a team’s roster. Play will be on Saturdays and Sundays (dates and teams TBD). Our philosophy is to learn the game, teamwork, sportsmanship, as well as have fun. There are no cuts as everyone has an equal opportunity to enjoy being involved. We need coaches, managers, team parents & volunteers to work with the young people as well as help in the administration of the program. Please contact Leila Kaczmarek at [email protected] if you would like to become involved in this exciting ministry.

This year’s USCCB Respect Life Program theme is Be not afraid: “Behold I am with you always, until the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20). Our Lord’s assurance gives us courage to be a witness LIFE, from the moment of con-ception to natural death. Kick-off your witness during Respect Life Month at this Mass. Contact Suzanne Stack, Life Issues Coordinator with any questions at 585-328-3210, ext.1304 or [email protected].

Beginning Experience is a peer support group for sepa-rated, divorced and widowed adults. The weekend pro-gram helps deal with the natural grief process and offers an opportunity, through God, for dealing with the pain and loss and moving into the future with renewed hope. Our next weekend will be held at the Notre Dame Retreat House, overlooking Canandaigua Lake, October 13th-15th, 2017.
