We have applied for the Beacon, Gratitude and Promise Grants to help support our Special Needs, Backpack and annual Easter Egg Hunt programs. As we prepare to roll out the annual Backpack Fundraiser, (September 1), we will need lots of volunteers to help. Please consider this worthwhile and meaningful project. Let’s be loud and proud of our motto “Elks Care – Elks Share” and make this the largest fundraiser to date for the hungry children in our community. We are now in August and summertime is winding down. The lodge continues to grow as new members have been added every month of this year. We still have a few delinquent members from last year, but the list is getting smaller all the time.

July was a busy and fun Elks month, and August holds more exciting events and memories. Don’t forget to watch for the weekly emails to stay in touch and check out the calendar for updates!

Initiations in April: Linda Smith – proposed by Linda Dodson; Chad Pittman – proposed by Jim Cooke; Welcome to the Hickory Lodge!

Proposed in April: Patricia Delgado – proposed by Bruce Sigmon; John Almeida – proposed by Gary Gantt; Melissa Dawn Pope – proposed by Bruce Sigmon; Robert W. McEllen – Proposed by Ken Luterbach

Please stay connected to your Lodge, because there are a lot of exciting things going on. The links below, will help you get plugged in: Facebook: B.P.O.E. Hickory Lodge 1654 www.Hickorylodge1654.org www.ncelks.org www.elks.org

We have over 100 members who have not submitted an email address. Who does not love the convenience of an email? Please call or email me (see below) with any updated or new email addresses so that we are sure that you are updated with the newsletter and other lodge information.

See you at the Lodge.

I am proud to announce our Elk of the month is Sheryl James, one of our most active members. Currently, she is serving on the Board of Directors, the Renovation Committee, is Co-Chair of the Building Fundraiser Committee, Queen of Hearts Coordinator. She helps with Public Relations when asked and still finds time to help with Helping Hands and the Lodge Budget. Sheryl has been an Elk for 10 years and is married to Andrew James, our Tiler. Both are committed and dedicated people to our order! Thank you, Sheryl!

Please remember to sign in your guests and this includes adult family who are not Elk Members. Only one meeting in August on the 16th. See you there!

Looking forward,Carole L. AndersonExalted RulerNew Email: [email protected]

The 4th of July BBQ at the NC Veterans Home in Black Mountain was absolutely fabulous. Ten Hickory Elks made the trip and served BBQ, beans, slaw, buns, and watermelons. This was in addition to what the staff at the facility had cooked with hamburgers, hot dogs and all the fixings. Please check out some of our pictures. A big thank you for those Elks who attended, and I can’t forget Tim Long and Chuck Crawford for working their BBQ magic as usual, and Joe Elko, our Western District Veterans Home rep, who purchased snacks to replenish their “pubs”.

Our next event will be another day at the ballpark. The date will be announced soon, so please check your emails and the Lodge Facebook page for details.

Everyone have a safe, healthy summer and remember:

Respectfully, Charlene WalkerVeterans Committee Chair

Students go back to school this month, so we will contact middle schools to get the 6th, 7th and 8th graders ready for our Americanism essay contest. This years theme is “What Makes You Proud of America?”, so encourage children in these grades to enter. We also will contact area High School JROTC units for Honored Veteran nominations, where ROTC Cadets vote on candidates proposed by their fellow cadets. We then honor them at the Lodge in February with a free breakfast and a presentation ceremony.

Also, please attend the 9-11 Remembrance Ceremony under the Sails on September 11 from 6-7PM. Local firefighters and police will be there representing those who were lost on 9-11.

Have a great August and remember “God Bless America”.

Brothers & Sisters, cheers to a marvelous first half of the year!

Boy, there was a lot going on last month. We really hope that you were a part of John Long’s big Surprise Bday Bash, because everyone who came helped him raise over $850 in donations for the Backpack Program – WOW!!! There also were super dinners from bone-in chicken to a dynamo Haddock meal starring Chuck M. & the YAYA band.

Besides Bruce’s upcoming birthday, August will include Melt in Yo Mouth Meatloaf, Spankin Spaghetti, and don’t miss Steak & the Gang.

Save these dates for these upcoming events! On Tuesday, 9/18, there will be a RUM Tasting with a Caribbean food and a new member social. Then gear up for Sunday, 9/23 for the big Elks’ Carolina Panthers Game Trip and Friday, 10/26 for the Halloween party!

Watch for more to come... stay safe & see you at the lodge.

Elks Live – Elks Give Elks Care – Elks Share

Lady Elks NewsHappy Summer from the Lady Elks. After a break in July, here is our latest news.

The Yard Sale held on June 23rd raised $267, which will be used for our youth charities. Thanks so much for all who worked, participated and donated items.

We do have some unfortunate news to share regarding the Jon Reep show scheduled for December 18th. He now is unable to appear but hopefully, we can reschedule for sometime next year.

Our last meeting was a pool party held at Sandy Lail’s lovely home. Even though many were on vacation or had other obligations, a great time was had by all,. We discussed our Mission Statement, which will be presented at our next meeting.

We are working on other fundraisers and have tossed around ideas that will come to life soon. Our next event will be on September 7, where Lady Elks will volunteer for tip money by bartending for the NC League of Municipalities, which will hold an event in the parking lot adjacent to the Hickory Elks Lodge.

Our next meeting is Tuesday, August 7th at 6:30 at Hickory Elks Lodge. Come join us and have a safe August!

BrendA wronekWOW! The 150th Elks Convention was amazing! I highly suggest that you go next year to St Louis – you will be blown away. This year’s DAP program was informative & energetic.

Octoberfest is scheduled for Ovctober 12-14 this year, and DAP will post the volunteer sign up sheet in early September. You all did a fantastic job last year showing your support, and I’m asking for it again as Charlie and I will be scattering my mother’s ashes in Pennsylvania that weekend. If there are questions, see me or call 704-651-5174 anytime.

DAP meetings we’ll resume September 6th at 6:30pm before the lodge meeting. If you know of an event that the DAP would work at please let me know, and remember – LOCK UP YOUR DRUGS!

Meet Our New Members! Be sure to introduce yourselves.

Elks Loving Kare SocialWhat a great turn out for our July celebration. We were almost at full capacity, which is a rare occurrence for July since many of our participants are away at Camp. Thanks to a bunch of great Elks Volunteers, we had a great time. The menu was baked ziti, green beans and garlic rolls, and our famous, wonderful and entertaining DJ Couple did an outstanding job as they always do with a floor full of dancers!

Our next event will be our first Car Wash on Saturday, August 25th, where we will raise money for the 2018-2019 E.L.K.S. events. Our Special Kare Participants will be washing your cars, while we will serve them hamburgers and hot dogs. More information and volunteer opportunities will be posted at the Lodge.

Speaking of which, Thank You, Volunteers!!! These events can’t be held without you. If you’ve not volunteered, please come and join us. You won’t be sorry, and your heart will be happy!
