mean really, how much effort does that
require.
The toy was a gift to my Mum many years ago and is very lifelike in
appearance, it’s even fooled some of our
guests into thinking there was a live cat
on the bed on occasion, in fact I think Coralee actually thought Butthead had
managed to drag a live cat out of the
house!
Let’s face it if he’d managed to catch our
cat Moxie (the Small Evil One, as I like to think of her) he would definitely
NOT have been smiling, he’d have been
spitting out his teeth and bleeding from
the multitude of puncture wounds and disembowelling back leg scratches she
would have inflicted within the first 5
seconds. (Moxie may be small but she’s
mean, deadly and has a pyscho-like
personality as both Bryan and I can attest.) Coralee screamed at Butthead
to drop it (which quite unbelievably he
did) and I just burst out laughing, I
couldn’t help myself it was just one of those ridiculously funny occasions, the
ones you get to tell over and over when
other people start talking about their
animals, home life, kids etc, etc, etc. It
was also a cathartic stress reliever as all really good belly laughs are.
I hope everybody bought up big at the
Footy Club Auction last weekend, let’s
face it, it’s a great way to get rid of all
the junk in your sheds, to make way for all the new junk you buy! (Been there,
done that, got the scars to prove it!)
It’s going to be a huge month in Lilydale
with the Lilydale Festival of Wood on the weekend of March 16 & 17th, the
Pony Club Open day also on the 17th
and the Teddy Bear’s Picnic on the 24th,
along with our regular Village and
Producer’s Markets so make sure you check out the schedule inside and get to
as many of the planned
events as you can.
Editorial
You know when you have one of those
days when you just can’t stop being silly?
Well it happened to me, again, not so long ago. There we were some friends
and I, enjoying afternoon tea on the
deck, homemade waffles with fresh
blueberries and icecream. A gentle breeze was alleviating the all pervasive
heat, the birds were singing, the soft
tinkling of water from the fountain in the
pond was balm to our ears, when all of a
sudden the peace was shattered by the crashing of… The Cat Burglar!!!
Our home had been invaded, the
sanctity of our possessions violated, and
there right in front of us was the nefarious culprit, his guilt plain for all to
see. Standing about 50 cm tall, his four
feet planted in the soil ready for instant
flight, the Ginger Ninja had struck again,
but this time it was one of MY stuffed animals who stood on the threshold of
instant annihilation from his deadly
clutches.
The Ginger Ninja has many aliases,
Buddy, Butthead and many others not mentionable in polite society, is a staffy
cross one dog demolition derby. His
sole purpose in life is to destroy as many
soft fluffy toys as possible. No he is not my dog, although I sometimes think he
thinks he belongs to Bryan as they are
inordinately fond of each other, he was
simply a visitor on this occasion. A
visitor who thinks nothing of poking around in our guest bedroom and
stealing, yes you guessed it, the fluffy
Persian cat toy that was sitting on the
spare bed!
There he stood with the fluff spreading
out of his mouth, teeth clamped around
the belly of the beast, and a grin the size
of the Gibson dessert plastered on his
soppy face. So proud of his ability to catch and subdue a stationary object, I

covers horsemanship, dressage, jumping, games and

for you and your mount!
April 28 Rally - Warwick Morgan Equine Dentistry &
“Too Tough to lose”.
More fantastic things are planned for our April Rally on
the 28th April with Warwick Morgan giving a lunch time presentation on equine dentistry – an important
topic for all horse and pony owners.
He will also talk about the incredible biography he
wrote about his father, Laurie Morgan called “Too
Tough to Lose”. It is an inspiring and insightful account of a truly great equestrian life. Laurie was the first
Australian to win an individual Olympic gold as an
equestrian and the first ever rider to finish the three
day event with a plus score in the history of the
Olympic Games. He played a pivotal, if not the leading role in the Australian Equestrian team’s brilliant
performance at the Rome Olympics: Australia won two
gold medals and a silver.
State Eventing Trials
On the weekend of the 10th - 12th March the State
Eventing Trials are being held in Wynyard. We are
excited to announce that Tia Adams, Lisa Van Riel and
Zoe Willis are competing and representing our club at
this high level event. We wish them all the best.

Lilydale Neighbourhood Watch
Serving residents of Lilydale since 1992.
February 2013 Meeting
Eleven people attended this meeting, unfortunately no
police were available to attend the meeting and no Crime was reported.
Thieves target outdoor equipment
While the majority of people are conscious of locking
up their homes, many are still not securing their
trailers, caravans, boats and leaving other valuable property on display and insecure in their front yards.
Thieves specifically target trailers, boats on trailers and
boating equipment. You can secure your trailer by
using trailer and tow bar locks, for under $60, available
from car accessory outlets. People are also leaving Motor Vehicles unlocked sometimes with doors left
open in full view of the street, this is an open invitation
to any would be thief.
Stolen items of property are usually sold at an unusually cheap price. If the price is too good to be true, then
the chances are it is stolen. If you suspect this is the
case, contact Launceston CIB for advice on 131 444 or
contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Did you
know, that if you purchase items you suspect or know are stolen, you are committing a crime?
Launceston Police would like to thank residents for
being vigilant over the holiday period and reporting
suspicious activity and unsafe acts of driving.
Police are still targeting the use of unregistered trail
bikes on public reserves and roads.
Any information leading to the identification of riders is
being sought by police, and should be forwarded to
Crime Stoppers, or by phoning 131444.
Police would like to remind members of the public to
report any suspicious behaviour to Bush Watch on
1800 333 000 or to Police on 131444. If the matter is
urgent, and requires immediate assistance, Triple 000
should be used.
Next Meeting
The next meeting of the Lilydale Neighbourhood
Watch will be held at the Fire Station on 14th March
2013 commencing at 8pm.
We are always looking for new members so if you have
an hour or so to spare once a month, why not come
along to our meetings.
Remember everyone is welcome to attend.
Truisms If you look like your passport picture, you probably
need the trip.

Lilydale
Our first meeting of the year was held on 6 February. It was great to catch up with everyone’s
news. We also welcomed 2 visitors, who were keen to
find out more about our organisation. We had a
shared lunch together.
With the New Year upon us our conversation turned
to anniversaries, with comparisons made about who
was born in Tasmania, who arrived when, who had
come the furthest to get here. Barbara is one of the
furthest in distance, but has only been here 19 years!
We are keen to get our information out to the
younger, more tech savvy population, so we will be
investigating online links etc.
It was resolved to order some “Puppy Banks” from the Guide Dog Association; these are kept at home for
loose change over 2 months or so, with no amount too
small. We also resolved to have a joint venture with
the Lilydale Uniting Church, cooking pancakes on
Shrove Tuesday for the Lilydale School’s Breakfast Club. We were very warmly welcomed at the school
and helped serve 140 breakfasts.
The statewide Craft Camp at Deviot in February was
well attended – from our branch Jennifer taught
origami boxes, and Norma taught drawn thread work.
For our March meeting we will be discussing ideas for
the State health topic, country of study, and fundraiser
for the 2013/2014 year.
Next meeting is on Wed 6 March at 9.30am in the Uniting Church sitting room. Bring lunch to share and
learn some new craft.
Upper Piper Arts & Crafts Co-Op
It has been a great start to 2013 for the
co-op with an increase in sales and more
encouragingly we have had many new
members joining who bring a wide range of talents and craft ideas. If you have not been in the shop
for a few weeks you will be surprised by changes in
variety of the stock, reflecting the skills of the new
artists and the success of recent sales. Because of the increased sales we need to remind artists that Easter is
fast approaching and replacement stock is needed
urgently.
The Teddy Bears’ picnic is being held by Lilydale Lions
Club at Hollybank, on Sunday 24th of March 2013. The co-op is having a market stall at the picnic, spending
over $10 will gain you a FREE ticket in the raffle so we
hope to see you there.
Volunteers are always needed to staff the shop so if you would like to be involved why not attend our next
meeting in the Lilydale Court House on March 10 at
2.30pm.
Are you ready for digital TV?
On 9 April 2013 analog TV will be permanently
switched off across Tasmania and free-to-air TV will be
broadcast in digital-only.
To continue watching free-to-air TV, you need to ensure your television
can receive the digital signals by
either:
connecting a set-top box or digital recorder to an analog TV, or;
upgrading to a digital TV, which
has a built-in digital tuner.
If you cannot access digital TV from a terrestrial transmitter site the government-funded Viewer Access
Satellite Television (VAST) service is available. The
VAST service offers all 17 free-to-air channels and a
regional news channel. To access VAST you will need a
satellite dish and VAST set-top box for each TV you wish to connect.
The Government has set up two practical assistance
schemes to help with the switch to digital TV. The
Household Assistance Scheme and the Satellite Subsidy Scheme are available now; if you are eligible you should
have received a letter asking you to apply.
However if unsure of potential eligibility go to
‘Myswitch’ on the internet and enter your address as
directed.
The information provided will give an indication of the
strength of the TV signal, direction of transmitter and
whether it is possible that you may be eligible for one
of the assistance schemes.
To find out more about digital switchover, including
how to access local help and information about
assistance schemes, visit the Digital Ready Website
www.digitalready.gov.au, call the Digital Ready
Information Line on 1800 20 10 13 or contact Tony Deane-Shaw, Digital Switchover Liaison Officer on
0419 541 758.

Lions and the Bushfires
Lions around the state have been on the ground
assisting the recovery efforts from the recent bushfires. Lions in the south from various clubs have been helping
from the first days of the recovery, working with locals
in all effected areas, to ascertain their needs. Lions have
been and are continuing to feed 80-100 people daily
who are working in the recovery effort. They are working with Blaze Aid replacing 400 km fencing
destroyed in the fires, with a tool shed being delivered
from Victoria. After consultations with locals, Lions
have been asked by the community for a shower block, toilets and laundry. This is being delivered this week.
An on going Lions project for next few years will be to
build a Community Hall, again as requested by the
locals.
Lions Clubs around Tasmania and the mainland have donated $200,000 to aid these efforts. Lions are there
early, and for the long haul.
Mt Arthur Track
Lions member Nick, has recently installed an
information board at the beginning of the summit track. The board contains maps, photos and information on
the waking track up and on the summit. The club has
also signed a new 2 year agreement with Forestry
Tasmania with regards to maintaining the track.
March will be a very busy month with Markets, Teddy
Bears’ Picnic, the wood festival and other activities.
Keep an eye open for the Lions big red marquee and
the red shirted members. Come and say hello.
Oh and by the way
I did promise some photos of our intrepid slippery dip

February 2013 Meeting Report
The first meeting for the year took place early February
and the attendance was a little low comparing to most
of 2012 meetings. The general business concerned the following agenda.
Planning Scheme: It appears for the time being that
‘Rural Living’ zoning is off the agenda. This proposed
zoning would have allowed for the possibility of more
larger blocks and hobby farms. From previous community consultations with the Launceston City
Council this zoning is what the community supported.
It was agreed that the 2011 proposal be resubmitted.
Lilydale Arts: Catherine spoke at length regarding the
forthcoming ‘Festival of Wood’ and the grand opening of the Mural Painted Poles. LDPA is fully supportive of
this great community event and will be assisting
whichever way we can.
Lilydale Activity Space: Leon spoke and presented his proposal of a generic activity space allowing for the
local children to have their own space. The concept has
been on the drawing board for a while and now it is
time for an action LDPA sub committee to drive this
project.
Lilydale Markets: The Village Market and Lilydale
Larder Sunday markets have brought a lot of people
into our town hopefully this will continue.
Water Committee: A number of issues have been raised out of committee so a meeting will be held this
month to discuss these concerns. ‘Love Lilydale
Water’ project is still on the drawing board. Hopefully
details will be released this month.
Street Scape: Parking along the area in front of the Village Green especially on Market days is causing
concern. The pinned down kerbing was removed to
allow for the resealing of the main street. We are of
the understanding that a full yellow line indicating no
parking in this area will be painted in this area by the LCC.
Other Business: If your organisation has a key to the
Court House could they please let Tom Dancer at the
Post Office know. Bookings are made at the PO and it is necessary to know who the key holders are.
Agenda Items for the March meeting:
Community Commercial Kitchen, Solar Lighting for the
Memorial Monument, Activity Space plus lots more
local concerns.
Why not become an active member of your
community and join us at the next meeting at 7.30pm
on Tuesday 5th March at the Lilydale Court House.
You will be welcome.

Hope to see you there.

Senior Citizens
It is almost two months since Christmas. We started
back at bowls in late January after a very enjoyable Christmas break.
The Tamar Valley meeting was held at Lilydale on
February 7th between George Town, Beaconsfield &
Lilydale, no-one was eager to take on Secretary or Treasurer roles, so the few members that were at the
meeting decided to send a letter to the three clubs to
see if we could get someone interested, if not it will be
disbanded. The meeting will be held on 18th March at
Lilydale.
We have so very few members & North East have
asked us to help out with carnivals at different times.
We are having a big grocery raffle this Easter for our
club. As there isn’t any more news…
Good bowling to all.

Lilydale Village Market and the
Festival of Wood
The Lilydale Village Market is a thriving local
community event in the heart of Lilydale. The market
is open every second Sunday from 10am to 2pm. Each
market has local arts and crafts, produce, kids rides,
food, local wine and beer and often live music and special performances.
This Sunday 3rd March features Indonesian inspired
mask dancing, starting 11:30am.
On Saturday 16th March, Festival of Wood events will be held on the market site, and coffee and the
LDPA wine and beer bar will be open!
Sunday 17th March is the Festival of Wood market
celebrating fine local woodcrafting and wood cutting
heritage with Festival of Wood events and the announcement of the Post competition winner. The
market will have extended hours to 4pm.

Lilydale Landcare Report
We are pleased to report that our recent Small Farms
Field Day and the National launch of the new Federally
funded “Small Farm Living Resource Centre”, an
initiative by NRM North, to assist small farmers, was a huge success!
More than 200 people came from as far away as
Smithton, Branxholm, Deloraine and Latrobe and their
was even a couple from France, and an animal handler
from Queensland.
All the presenters did a sterling job, and there was
much to be learned from each presentation, it was also
great to have the Trades and equipment stands there
to add to the interest.
It was disappointing more locals weren’t there to find out what assistance is available to them, but with both
markets on, that kept a lot a people involved.
Oh to be spoilt for choice what to do in Lilydale!
This month on the 10th March, Sunday at 11.00 AM we will meet up with Oliver from the Understory
Network at Merthyr Park for a seed collecting walk,
then Back to Sonoma Lodge where a BBQ lunch will

Lilydale Arts
Invitation
All members of the Lilydale community are cordially
invited to the official opening of the Lilydale Mural
Painted Poles combined with the Inaugural Festival of
Wood.
When: Saturday 16 March at 1 pm
Where: Lilydale Village Green
With: Underwood Band, Fire Brigade sausage sizzle,
wood elves a’dancing and lots more!
Our Last Pole Painting Report!
Hurrah! The ladies in orange moving slowly south on
the main street painting the Poles have almost dried
their brushes and cleaned their hands and fingernails
of paint.
Over the last fourteen months we have been, with
the generous help of volunteers including Lilydale Dis-trict School students, transforming the aged and faded
painted poles into vibrant, energetic, whimsical, witty
and moving works of art.
We, the Lilydale artists and volunteers are handing over to you, the community of Lilydale, these
beautifully painted images. Be proud of the work
done. Many people from all over the world have
stopped, admired and photographed the images on
the poles. We are the envy of Australia.
The official opening of this will be combined with the
Inaugural Festival of Wood at 1 pm on Sat 16 March
on the Village Green – see our invitation. We want
everyone to join in the celebrations.
As this is our last Pole report I would sincerely thank
my team starting with all the artists - leading artists
Leanne Hodgetts, Jenny Scott, Mags Warren-Roberts
and Teresa Whyman together with all the thirty or so
wonderful volunteers including our school students, ably directed by Kim Schneider and Paula Crook. All
fourteen poles look stunning and are a testament to
your creativity.
My very efficient agent, Brenda Bryce, thank you.
Thank you to you the community for support over the 14 months of work.
This project was funded by the Tasmanian
Community Fund and The Launceston City Council.
Thank you to Lilydale Arts for allowing me to undertake this project.
What's next?
Bernadine Alting - Project Manager
Lilydale Mural Pole Painting.
POST Competition
Thank you to all who are taking up the POST
challenge – to decorate a wooden post with the
theme POST. There are still more posts available –
get your POST voucher for $5 at the Post office of Pharmacy then take the voucher to Bardenhagen’s
Hardware. Then get creative.
At 9 am on Saturday 16 March bring your completed
entry to the Paddock in between the Lilydale Village
Market and the Uniting Church. Lilydale Arts members will be there to ensure that the posts are
displayed in the paddock to create a fabulous
exhibition of Lilydale creativity viewable from the
footpath. Annette Waddle has kindly agreed to judge the POST competition and her decision will be
announced at the Village Green on Saturday 16
March. Meanwhile, there is the People’s Choice
Award by popular vote, which will be announced at 1
pm Sunday 17 March at the Lilydale Village Market.

The Great Lilydale Waterwheel Mystery
We have found a photo taken in 1904 of two little girls
above a waterwheel. The caption of the photo is “The
Old Waterwheel, Lilydale”. Where was this waterwheel?
The Upper Piper Arts and Crafts Cooperative have
generously donated a wonderful prize to the first
person to identify and verify where the Old Waterwheel actually was. The photo is displayed in the
Co-op, and the Festival of Wood Facebook site and
will be an integral part of the Lilydale Festival of
Wood’s history exhibition from 10-4 Sat and Sun at
the Uniting Church. Put your entry in the box at the Uniting Church during the Festival weekend.
Making a Community Bench
A core part of the Lilydale Festival of Wood is seeing
UTAS’s Simon Ancher in action as he, with assistance from the community, creates a beautiful wooden
community bench between 10 and 4 pm Sat-Sun 16-17
March. If you are interested in being part of the team
working with Simon and his Fine Arts student, contact
Bernadine on 6395 1295.
Lilydale Festival of Wood 16-17 March 2013
Keep the page with all the Festival details published in
this month’s Progressive. Spread the word about the
many wonderful activities happening that weekend and
join us for the festivities, sausages, wood exhibitions, community bench making, Cary Lewincamp’s concert,
history, art and craft, competitions, markets,
wood-elves, and Underwood Band, not to mention the
chance to win 2 dozen bottles of premium Tasmanian wines in the Lilydale Arts raffle.

Welcome back to all our hard working staff and students. We have had a wonderful start
to the learning year and welcome some new faces to our staff. Ms Penny Wilde is now our K - 4 Sector Leader. Mrs Bella Mitchell is a new teacher on our Prep/1 class and we also
welcome to our 3/4 class Miss Nerida Scamp and Miss Lauren Kan.
Congratulations to ex LDS student
Nick Griggs, brother of Trent and son of
Debbie who is a Teacher’s Aide and also runs our clothing pool, graduated last week with his
March Out from Kapooka Army Base at Wagga Wagga in NSW. Nick left Lilydale District
School at end of 2011 and was selected into
the Australian Defence Force late last year after a very competitive general entry process
that took nearly nine months.
Of the 50 other recruits who started with
Nick, only 31 made it through the very demanding training program leading up to their
March Out on Friday of last week. Nick was so successful that he was presented with a special
award for being the Most Outstanding Soldier
in his unit. His sense of duty, his courage, his comradeship and above all his great potential
for leadership were what stood out.
Nick was transferred on Monday to Singleton
for three more months of intensive training in his specialised field of Rifleman. After that he
will be posted to Townsville where he will be
eager for deployment overseas.
Congratulations to Nick! For those of us who
know him, we are reassured that the defence
of our country is in very capable hands.
Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Tuesday)
On Tuesday, 12 February the Student
Representative Council and ladies from CWA and the local Uniting Church came together to
cook pancakes! If you can imagine the scene: many smiling, hungry faces piling through the
door eager to taste a delicious pancake. There we were feeding the masses, going through
pancake mix like there was no tomorrow!
Amid the rush for breakfast, I couldn’t help but
feel a bit like Bilbo Baggins from “The Hobbit” having a group of dwarves coming into his
home and emptying out his larder. This scene from The Hobbit is a great example of what
Shrove Tuesday is all about. Having eaten to
their heart’s content, the dwarves are now ready for the journey ahead of them. For those
of you who have seen the movie, you will understand the significance of that first feast in
Bilbo’s home. For the journey they face is one
of hardship, of great sacrifice and of exploring who they really are, all the while pressing
forward towards their goal, which makes the
journey worthwhile. Along the journey
challenges are faced, decisions made and heroes are discovered. Likewise in the next stretch in
our own journey between now and Easter, we
may face challenges – new and old, we will definitely have decisions to make and we may
discover a hero or two, in ourselves or another. Therefore whatever we face, I hope
those who enjoyed a pancake on Shrove
Tuesday find enough strength for their own journey!
