T H E S T A R September 1, 2012

What gets you excited? Is it going out on a date, or finding just the right outfit for

a special event, or the latest volume in a book series you really love? Is it discover-ing a really delightful restaurant?

For me as a child, it was going shopping for school supplies. Now I know that this is not the most fun thing that parents can do, especially in these days when the

shopping list from your child's school may run more than a page, and when some

of the items are quite pricey. But for kids, it's a different story. It is the possibility contained in a notebook or binder, the knowledge that with new pens and pencils

you can rule the world (or at least your homework), the frisson that comes with not knowing what the future will bring, but it's gonna be amazing! Seeing old

friends and making new ones, hoping that the teachers will be nice, or at least not scary, wondering what new thing you will learn.

Now that's excitement!

Have you ever felt that excitement about coming to church? Perhaps on the day you would be confirmed, or when your child was being baptized, or when there

was to be a special program that you were looking forward to?

Or has coming to church become humdrum, something you always do because it is

what you always have done it? What would it take to make church exciting again?

First a disclaimer: making church exciting isn't about what the church needs to change to rev you up. It's much more about what YOU need to do to reconnect to

God when we gather for worship or study or fun and fellowship. In the course of this program year, there will be opportunities for you to reconnect in this way, not

just for a single Sunday, but for the length of your days as a follower of Christ.

How do you do that? Try something new. Come to a different service and see how

it feels. You will either love it or it will remind you what you love about the service

you usually attend. Try a different opportunity for learning, like Adult Forum, Epis-copal 101, or one of the Bible studies. We never stop learning when it comes to

God, so don't assume you already know everything you need. God's got more to tell you. Experiment with different ways to serve others, like Lamb's Basket or

CARITAS or helping out occasionally in the nursery or in Sunday School. When you

start seeing kids learning about their relationship with God, you may discover some new things about your relationship with God, too! Commit to a deeper level of gen-

erosity in ways that will help others, when you pledge or when you bring nonper-ishable goods to restock the shelves of Lamb's Basket.

Last but not least, speak up! And speak up in two directions: first, speak into the

church if there is something you would like us to try. Then, speak out to the world, to neighbors and friends, to invite them to share the excitement of our par-

ish as we all work to get to know God better and to show that in our actions.

It's a new year - what will excite your heart and soul for God today?

The Vestry met on August 14th at 6:30 pm. There had been no July meeting, so after our Bible study, we ap-proved the June minutes. We accepted the Treasurer’s Report, which shows that although we are running a deficit, we are in substantially better shape than we had budgeted for at this time in the year. We approved the Internal Audit Committee’s report so that it can be sent on to the diocese, ahead of the due date for the first time in many years.

We discussed upcoming programs for the fall, especially Harrison Higgin’s proposal for an evangelism activity that would involve a casual night around the campfire out on our front lawn once a month, an event that would welcome folks into our faith community in a non-intimidating way. The Vestry approved and encour-aged Harrison, and he will gather a small committee to help implement the plan.

We heard that the playground is continuing to move forward under Garrett Russell’s direction. We hope that it will be completed soon.

We will be moving forward with a pictorial directory. Gray will contact Lifetouch and discuss when we can get started. Since the process has changed from the last time we did one – now we can schedule online, for ex-ample – we hope this will be a stress-free and fun parish project.

Other committees are ramping up for the program year, including Christian Ed. They are in need of some helpers to assist in their programs.

The meeting closed in prayer at 8:20. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, September 18 at 6:30 pm.

Vestry Highlights

“Be Prepared” Is Not Just the Boy Scout Motto September is National Preparedness Month, an annual nationwide effort to encourage Americans to plan

and prepare for emergencies. Since April 2011, nearly every Virginian has experienced tornados or earth-

quakes, hurricanes, tropical storms or the severe derecho wind storms – or a combination of these disas-

ters. All of these are reminders that everyone is responsible to be ready for both predicted and unexpected

emergencies.

If you are not ready, you can “Pledge to Prepare” during September. Governor Bob McDonnell has issued a

proclamation to encourage all Virginians to take action during National Preparedness Month.

This is the ninth annual National Preparedness Month commemoration. Families, individuals, businesses, and public and private groups and organizations can join the NPM Coalition and “Pledge to Prepare.” Reg-ister as a national coalition member by visiting www.Ready.gov and clicking on the Pledge to Prepare ban-ner. If you’re still not prepared, I’ll be giving an adult forum session on how to be prepared at home in Septem-

ber.

Lakeside Summer Nights a great Success!!

Jessica Isemann would like to thank everyone for their help with Lakeside Summer nights. It was a great success because of everyone’s help.

The acting, the meals, the crafts, everything was great.

I look forward to next year!

St. Giles Gate Program

We are resuming our Christian Ed and worship program for children with special

needs on Saturday, September 22nd

at 10:00 AM and are in need of a few new

teachers. The curriculum is a very simple one, all scripted for you, with visual aids

that help the children understand the story and learning how to teach this way is

not difficult. We could also use some “shepherds” (teacher’s aides) to help as well.

Please let Mary+ or Kristin Carver know if you are interested and would like to

know more.

Pictorial Directory

We are exploring doing a new pictorial directory in conjunction with LifeTouch. The majority of

those who had an opinion about whether we should do the directory “in-house” or by using an

outside photographer voted in favor of the latter option. Much has changed since the last time we

used such a company. For instance, now all scheduling can be done online. As always, you are

under NO OBLIGATION to buy the pictures. This is a great way for long-time members to get to

know the new folks, or for the new folks to get to know those who are long-time members. If you

have a recent family picture that you would prefer to use in the directory, that will work as well.

We will keep you posted as the plans proceed, and if you are interested in helping coordinate this

great (and fun) project, just let Gray Corbett know.

What’s Happening Elsewhere? A new 9-week support group for widowed men and women of all ages will begin in early Septem-

ber, 2012. It is designed for men and women widowed between a few months and several years.

It will be held on Tuesday evenings 7-9 PM at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, located at

2341 Winterfield Road, Midlothian, VA 23113.

Space is limited, and those who are interested or who wish to know more should contact the facil-

itator, Belinda Early, as soon as possible. There is a registration fee of $25 to cover books and

materials. Please feel free to pass this information on to anyone who might be interest. Contact:

Belinda Early phone: 897-5360 or 513-5772 email: [email protected]

Diocesan News: Open Hearings for the 2013 Annual Council will take place on Saturday, January

12 at Christ Church, Glen Allen. Annual Council will take place January 24-26 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Reston. Save the dates!

A new Wednesday morning Bible study class begins on September 19 at St.

Mark's, Richmond. Co-sponsored with Grace and Holy Trinity Church, this class will study the people, places and stories of the Bible. The class will meet from 10-11:15 a.m. For more information visit: www.stmarksrichmond.org or www.ghtc.org or call Malinda Collier at 804-358-4771.

A Closer Look At….Evangelism

The dreaded “E” word! That is how many Episcopalians react when someone says the word Evangelism. It conjures images of slick television preachers with pompadours urging viewers to send in cash to support the ministry (or at least their collection of thousand dollar hand-tailored suits!) But what does evangelism really mean? This word comes from the Greek word “euangelion,” which means “messenger of good news.” It has the same root as the word for angel, which means “messenger from God.” It is also the same word used to describe the four authors of the Gospels, who shared the Good News in their writings about Jesus’ life and works. And it appears that neither Matthew, Mark, Luke nor John had a pompadour or a television ministry. So what does this mean to us as Episcopalians? Perhaps we can reclaim the word “evangelism” in a way that takes it back to its original meaning. Simple, not too scary: share the good news. One of the ways that we share the good news is to live our day-to-day lives as Jesus would want us to. To live in ways that show that we love God and love our neighbors, with respect and help-ing and caring and joy. Another way that we share the good news is to invite a friend or a neigh-bor to come to church. This is, after all the place where we find the time and the space to be in conversation with God and to praise Him. But for some of our friends and neighbors, church may feel like an intimidating place. Perhaps they had a bad experience as a child in a church, or they don’t know what to expect, so they are reluctant, or they are afraid we do something weird…there can be many reasons why someone might reject our invitation to come to a service. But what if we invited them to something that feels less like a full-blown worship service and more like something fun and/or interesting? What if we simply invited them into a relaxed con-versation? That is the heart of a new initiative that Harrison Higgins is organizing. A friendly conversation with neighbors around a campfire on our front lawn. Some refreshments, some chairs, some cas-ual ways to “break the ice,” talking with neighbors, laughing, finding common ground. A prayer or a song at closing as we enjoy the beauty of God’s night sky. It is a simple sharing of the good news. No hard sell. No pitch for membership or money, just an invitation. That’s the way Jesus and the disciples did it, and it is a good model for us, too! So do not fear the “E Word”! You are already evangelizing by the conduct of your lives. This is a small step beyond that, and everyone is invited to play! If you would like to help Harrison in this outreach into our neighborhood, talk to him after church.

Adult Forum for September Our Adult Forum is offered each Sunday at 9:30 am in the Parlor, in between the 8:15 and the 10:30 ser-

vices, and covers a wide range of topics over the course of the year. All are welcome, either to sit and listen

or to engage in lively conversation.

Here’s what we have on tap for September:

September 2: Stump the Priest! Come with your questions, one and all…Mary+ will answer just about any-

thing (except for her weight) as best she can. Questions about the parish, our denomination, what we hope

for the future…all this and more will be a part of what we talk about in this fun, no-holds-barred session.

September 9: The “E” Word: Harrison Higgins, our diaconal candidate, will lead this discussion about how we

reach out to others to invite them to know Christ. As much a brainstorming session as a teaching session, we

will work together to find ways that work for us as individuals and as a parish to bring new members into our

church family.

September 16: Emergency Preparedness: Senior Warden Gray Corbett will lead this session which will give ou

tips on how to prepare for hurricanes, snowstorms, plagues of locusts, or whatever nature sends our way in

this storm season. We will also talk about how we are coming up with a plan for the parish, to keep this place

that we love so much as secure and protected as possible

September 23 and 30: Will I See My Dog in Heaven? What does the Bible have to say about our animal com-

panions? In these sessions, we will explore a theology of creation that lays out the answer to that big ques-

tion about whether or not there is some sort of Rainbow Bridge where our departed pets wait for us.

Have an idea for something you’d like us to explore in our Adult Forums? Let Mary+ know! Your comments

have led to adult forums on world religions, grief, and human sexuality….what ideas do you have for this

year?

Grab a cup of coffee and join us!

Men’s Bible Study—Starting back with a change!

Men’s Bible Class will resume with Mary+ on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month, begin-

ning on September 18th. We bring a bag lunch and convene in the parish hall at noon.

The Monday Book Group: our next meeting of the book group will be Monday, Sep-

tember 17th, when we will continue with the final chapters of “Falling Upward”. If we do

not complete the book on that date, we will do so on September 24th. We will begin a

new book, “Sabbath in the Suburbs”, on Monday, October 22nd @ 11:00 AM. A thought-

ful and fun book about finding Sabbath in our busy lives. Please let Mary+ know if you

want her to order a copy for you. The cost will be $14.00 each.
