TRAP SHOOTING A HIT AT OV “It was a new and fun experi-
ence. I think it was good that the school added the program and I hope that the school continues it. I hope in the future that more girls will join.”
Senior Kennedy Hallock, pic-tured shooting at right, is talking about trap. The Oswayo Valley School Board voted unanimously in May 2016 to approve the Trap Club and provide up to $4000.00 for transportation. In November, Mr. Doug Dickerson, father of the Middle-High School principal, came to school to accept signups and give information about trap in general and the club in particular. The students chose the name “Clay Crashers.” The group began practicing late in January, and their first competition, which they won, was on February 28, against Bolivar-Richburg at the Oswayo Valley Rod and Gun Club.
Currently, the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletics Associa-tion does not recognize trap as a sport.

Destiny Green, senior trap shooter and journalism/yearbook student, asked her fellow senior shooters about their experience. Ryan Brown, near right, said he enjoyed not only the activity but the people he shot with. Jeremy Mesler, far right, had never shot trap before and is now qualified to shoot at state level.
Shooters stand at sta-ons to shoot each clay “bird,” actually a disk, as it flies. Each shooter takes five shots from each sta-on, for a maximum possible score of 25. Our highest shooter is Jeremy Mesler, with a personal best of 24.

Mr. Ben Smith, Oswayo Valley vocal and instrumental teacher, and Mrs. Diane Gilroy, President of the Music Boosters, led the assembled parents and communi-ty members in congratulating music students for their dedica-tion and hard work.
The ceremony began with a welcome by Mrs. Gilroy and a presentation to Mrs. Lewis and Mr. Smith, which was followed by introductory comments by Mr. Smith. He said that although he “only had 14 trophies,” he wishes he could give everyone a trophy.
He added that he doesn't always believed in trophies just for par-ticipation, but music requires a lot of time out of school in per-sonal practice as well as after-school practice in groups, so he believes that dedication should be recognized and applauded.
This year marks the first combi-nation of Middle and High School Chorus and Middle and High School Band, so the ceremony included “6th Grader Awards,” given to the 6th grade Chorus and Band student who showed the most enthusiasm, preparation,

and participation. Another unique award is the “Forte Award,” given to the student “we never have trouble hearing.,” Mr. Smith said with a smile.
As Mr. Smith described and praised the students before call-ing them up for awards, he built a clear picture of the time and hard work the music department and its students have been putting in to their individual and group growth and performance.
In addition to awards, the re-ception included varied vocal and instrumental performances.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT Gaby Anselmi has been in the Oswayo Valley Music Program since elementary
school, where she performed in the Sound Waves. She has played in Concert
Band and Pep Band and also in OV Entertainment.
Gaby learned the clarinet in elementary school and switched to the trombone
in high school. She especially enjoyed “hanging out after school for pep band.”
Despite her love for instrumental music, she will not be studying music in col-
lege. Her focus will be political science and foreign study at Indiana University
of Pennsylvania. Mr. Smith said, simply but sincerely, “I’m gonna miss her.”

The Career and Technical Center, located in Port Allegany, accepts students from schools around the district, including Oswayo Valley. Here, students receive hands-on training and learning in different programs, including Auto Mechanic, Building Con-struction, Computer Networking, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Health Assistant, Heavy Equipment, Metal Working, and Welding. CTC students must pass rigorous testing, both online and on site (practical exams), both locally and nationally required, to be certified in their fields. Oswayo Valley students traditionally do quite well, often winning awards.

"Fall"
the leaves fall from the trees, driCing slowly to the ground.
"a forbidden love"
two star crossed lovers
so close but so far away
"Stars"
you put the stars in my sky unknowingly.
it's quite a tragedy that you didn't pick me.
I shined brighter than the others, but you
went for a supernova.
but then again, the best things always last infinitely.
True Best Friend
She is more than just a best friend to me Someone that I share all my secrets with Takes away my anger with lots of glee Is being your twin really just a myth? My best friend is like a precious flower On my bad days she is always right there A bond that keeps growing every hour To give up and let go, I would not dare True friends relate to you like no other We go together like peas in a pod True friends are there to help one another We love staying up late at light playing COD To me, true best friends are never apart Maybe in distance, but never at heart.
Best Friend
You are my friend that is always there You make me so happy I know you will always care This may be a li=le sappy No one else can measure You’re always there when I have doubt To me you’re like a treasure Especially when I want to shout A true friend indeed Look at all we overcame The only friend I need No other friend will be the same You are that best giC I have that no one can steal I thank God that he gave me someone that is real.

Little dots sparkle like diamonds and burn like lava they are high out of the reach of
men and they hold hopes and dreams filled with life and uncertainty
some shoot across the vast land surrounded by darkness and mysteries
and always challenging the way we think they hold both past and future at the same time and some seem to float effortlessly
twirling worlds, and holding them close never seeming to lose control
like a king and they are his knights
