It's the hap-happiest season of all” – Andy Williams

In a 2015 Harris Poll, 46% of Americans named Christmas their favorite holiday. We live in

a divided world but on this issue, there is unity across gender, race, and political leanings.

Christmas, for many is the “hap-happiest season of all.” And it is no wonder why. It is a

time of family and friends. Whether it is lutefisk, oyster stew, prime rib, or ham, food is in

abundance. There are smiles in the street and greetings of “Happy Holidays!”, or “Merry

Christmas.” We look forward to those traditions that connect us to ancestors and place.

And the gifts! What kid can contain the excitement of a tinseled tree with mysterious gifts

wrapped and nestled underneath?

After the autumn leaves have fallen and the Thanksgiving turkey has been de-

voured, there is an expectation of jolliness and joy as we anticipate gatherings and gifts,

lights and mistletoe. But, what if that isn’t how you are feeling? What if you’ve had a diffi-

cult year? What if this is the first year you have celebrated Christmas without the presence

of someone you love? What if a job was lost and this year the gifts aren’t in the usual

abundance? What if there are family dynamics that makes Christmas gatherings difficult

to navigate? What if the dark, cold nights and short days of winter are wearing you down

and you just aren’t excited about your annual hosting duties.

Christmas is a busy time of the year. In that busyness we sometimes unintentionally

overlook the reason that we are celebrating. God comes to us enfleshed. In a humble

manger, in the mess of the place designed for the animals, Jesus enters the world. There

was no place for Mary, for Joseph. Still, in the only corner carved out for them, Jesus

breaks through. For this, we give thanks. We celebrate our God who meets us in the

messy places of our lives; that shows up in the leftover places for the sake of you and me.

This year, as a way of acknowledging that this joyous season can also be difficult,

Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer is going to try something new. On December 21 at

6:30, you are invited to come to our first Longest Night Service. In the middle of the hustle

of Christmas, we slow down, and gather around scripture, song, prayer, and one another.

On the day of the year covered with the longest stretch of darkness, we recognize that we

might need rest. We recognize that in the dark night, some might need time to sit in the

glow of candle, receive prayer, and hear God’s promise of being among you in the dark

night, in the stress of the season, in the loneliness and loss that is just as real as the joy of

Christmas. Come and join us, trusting that “The light shines in the darkness, and the dark-

ness did not overcome it.” (John 1:5)

In Christ,

Pastor Dan

Mission of the Month - LCOOR Care Fund Our Mission of the Month for December is the Care Fund. Dollars donated to the Care

Fund are primarily passed along to church members needing help with food, clothing,

rent, utility payments, transportation, lodging and other emergencies. When donating to

the Mission of the Month, be sure to clearly mark “Mission of the Month” on your offering

envelope so that it is properly credited. The dollars you give through Missions of the

Month are so very much appreciated by those receiving the help they need. Thank you.

Thank you everyone for your generous donations to the Salvation Army Food Pantry.

Our 2 “Fill Pastor Kathy’s Car” Drives have totaled 4,000 items!

Because of you, the Salvation Army will be able to supply food to those who cannot do it

themselves for one reason or another.

The fellowship committee would like to thank all who attended ladies night out. We 'd especially like to thank the men who served and others who stayed after and helped with clean up!

Shepherds, why this jubilee?

I like to imagine the shepherds out in the fields before Jesus’ birth. While they are quietly minding their

own business (the business of minding sheep), they are among the first to hear The Good News!

“Suddenly an angel appeared among them, and the landscape shone bright with the glory of the

Lord.” – Luke 2:9

Can you imagine? Shepherds were not the most prestigious folks in Biblical times. Yet, the angel ap-

peared, saying, “Don’t be afraid. I bring you the most joyful news ever announced, and it is for every-

one! The Savior has been born tonight in Bethlehem.” – Luke 2:10-11

As we prepare to celebrate Jesus’ birth, it seems that we could continue to learn a great deal from the

shepherds. After they heard the host of heavenly angels singing, they said to one another, “Come on!

Let’s go to Bethlehem! Let’s see this wonderful thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us

about!” Luke 2:15

Now, how many of us display a nativity scene in our homes each year before Christmas? Given the

beautiful story in Luke, one would think shepherds would always be included. But, I’ve noticed over

the years that just isn’t the case. Shepherds tend to be overlooked in favor of figures representing the

Three Kings (or Wise Men). I guess there’s just something flashier about wearing crowns and bearing

gifts!

But, as we remember the humble beginnings of our Lord, cradled in the hay, I hope we can feel a

shepherd’s heart and also express this same jubilee for our Savior,“The shepherds told everyone what

had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child. All who heard the shepherd’s

story expressed astonishment.” -- Luke 2:17-18

Shepherds why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong? What the gladsome tidings be? Which

inspire your heavenly song? – Merry Christmas!

I can barely hear the word ‘jubilee’ without thinking of cherries! December’s recipe is

Marian Riddle’s “Cherry Bars” from the LCOOR Cookbook.

Cherry Bars

1 c sugar 1 c. cherry chips 2 T. butter

1 c. milk chocolate chips ¼ tsp. salt ½ c. peanut butter

1/3 c evaporated milk 1 c. chopped peanuts 1 c. mini marshmallows

Combine sugar, butter, salt and evaporated milk in 1-1/2 quart saucepan. Boil over medium heat for 5

minutes, stirring often. Stir in marshmallows and cherry chips. Spread in 8 inch square pan which has

been sprayed. Melt chocolate chips with peanut butter over low heat, stirring often. Stir in peanuts.

Spread over cherry layer. When cool, cut into squares. Refrigerate for faster setting.

Handbell Choir

Teens and adults are invited to join this group. A

basic knowledge of music is helpful, but reading

music is not required in order to be a part of this

group of merry ringers. The Handbell Choir, under

the direction of Bev Splinter, meets Wednesday

evenings at 7:15 to practice. This group plays for

worship an average of one time per month, as

well as for some of the festival worship services.

The Season of Advent Advent is a time of preparation. We in the Chris-

tian church take this time to prepare our hearts

for the coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus

Christ.

The word Advent is from the Latin “adventus”

which means “coming”. In the Christian Church

we celebrate three Advents:

1. Jesus came into our world, born in Bethlehem.

2. Jesus comes to us in Holy Baptism, in the

Lord’s Supper and in the neighbor. 3. Jesus will

come again, to bring us safely home.

Join us each week as we explore the meaning of

the four candles of Advent: Mary, the neighbor,

hope and Jesus.

Well done, good and faithful Servants!

We have been living and learning stewardship these past weeks – both in

worship and in our homes. Thank you for your faithful response to live and give

faithfully for the work of Jesus Christ in Watertown and around the world.

Total financial response will not be known for a couple weeks, but here is what

we received after our first weekend of Neighbor to Neighbor stewardship:

155 Estimate of Giving cards were returned through the mail

and in the offering plate

35 families indicated they are increasing their giving

Total pledged so far: $308,028 were committed for 2018

It is not too late to join the rest of us in making your commitment. Please find

your stewardship bag, discuss with your family, pray the stewardship prayer,

return your commitment and take the challenge of the master, that you too will

receive the “thumbs up” and hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant!.”

Check the church website and the Facebook posting of the video clip with

familiar faces saying thank you.

Thank you for your faith, generosity and hard work -- from the LCOOR

Stewardship Team.
