Harry M. Spence, M.D. was an innovative urologist and a renowned clinician and teacher, inter-
nationally known for his skill in directing formal and informal urologic conferences. Part of the
legacy he left at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center was to establish on of the
country’s first Visiting Professor Programs in Urology, which formally began 1963 with Howard
Hanley, M.D. UTSW has hosted many of the world leaders in urology through this program.
A unique aspect of the program has been the inclusion of visiting residents from other prominent
training programs in America. Providing diverse expertise and viewpoints, these visiting residents
contribute to an invaluable experience for all, and the program has spawned many lifelong friendships. In 1988, we
were pleased for the first time to invite back to Dallas a former visiting resident, Dr. Jerome Ritchie from Harvard, as
the Spence Visiting Professor.
