Gary shared an email/article by BriefCASE (Colorado Association of School Executives) that included a section on

Boards of Education. Gary had the group read the article and then share their thoughts/observations.

PTO Report: Friday 11/13/15 is LPS Night at the Denver Nuggets.

The 7th Grade party is 11/12/15 and is free to students (expenses covered by PTO). It has a Hollywood theme (teachers

said the kids are pretty excited).

The holiday lunch will be on 12/09/15 (parent Heather Quiroga is organizing it), and the cookie exchange will be on

12/02/15.

The December PTO meeting will feature new Superintendent Brian Ewart.

ETAC discussed appropriate screen time.

DAC: Amanda

There were three great candidates running for school board (election was 11/03/15 and new LPS school board members

are Jim Stephens and Robert Reichardt).

There are 15,800+ students in LPS (EMS has about 700 and Powell has 900+).

Student Learning Objectives: Ed Clous and All

Ed shared a very detailed PowerPoint presentation that included links to examples from cores/classrooms. Highlights/

notes include: SLOs include staff development, PLCs and instructional leadership. The roots of SLOs stem to Denver

Public Schools in the late 1990s. SLOs are now used in 25 states as a means to measure student outcomes. SLOs are not

used for teach pay for performance. SLOs are course-long learning objectives set by teachers along a learning progres-

sion towards critical learning outcomes. They include ambitious, realistic and measurable objectives.

Ed demonstrated SLOs for science, social studies, math and language arts and noted the emphasis on verbs in the exam-

ples (e.g. solve, analyze, cite evidence, support). Ed also showed examples of monitoring and progress reports.

Next fall, SLOs will be a part of district teacher evaluations (so EMS will be well-poised when this comes along).

Gary noted that there’s a “just right” time to share SLOs and data with parents. Odds are that teachers are already sharing

the terminology in parent-teacher conferences and parents just don’t know that they pertain to SLOs. It is good that EAC

is educated on this and can help communicate SLOs to the larger parent community (all agreed that it’s too soon for any

SLO information night with parents).

PARENT CONFERENCES

All School Conferences: These conferences are regularly

held in October and February. These are times for parents

to meet teachers in order to discuss student successes and

concerns. There are two formats for school conferences.

Scheduled: These pre-scheduled conferences are 20

minute time periods in which a teacher or parents can

make an appointment to conference together. These

conferences tend to focus on students who are struggling

academically.

Arena: Arena Conferences offer the opportunity for

parents to meet with teachers for ten-minute conferences

without an appointment. This enables parents to

conference with any or all of their students' teachers in a

short period of time. During this time period, all Euclid

staff will be in various designated areas in the school

according to grade and exploratory/elective area. These

conferences are on a first-come, first-served basis.

Thursday, February 11, 2016

4:30 – 7:30 pm Scheduled by parent or teacher

Thursday, March 31, 2016

4:30 – 7:30 pm Arena conferences (10 minute drop in)

Parents are welcome to request a conference with a

teacher(s) at any time during the school year. This type of

informal conference can be arranged by calling the

counselor who works with your student's core. The

counselor will coordinate and schedule the conference in a

timely manner. Parents can also call a teacher(s) directly

and schedule an appointment.

Kitchen News

Dear Parents,

Now that school is underway and everyone is get-

ting used to their routine, I would like to take care

of the lunch charges that have accumulated since

the beginning of the year.

I have been letting students charge when they have

not had lunch money. Things are busy, especially

for the new 6th graders, and I didn't want lunch to

be stressful.

Now that we are settled in, I would like to see less

charges for breakfast and lunch. Please be sure to

send your student with money or put it in their ac-

count through MySchoolBucks.com.

If your student has charges, please send the appro-

priate amount to take care of the charge.

If you have questions about an account, please

don't hesitate to call me or e-mail me.

Thank you so much for your help,

Diana McCubbin

HIV/STD Awareness Speaker – Eighth Grade Assembly Connecting Consequences with Choices

Next semester the eighth grade students will hear HIV positive Barb Wise tell her story. Her promotional brochure

states she “takes the audience through her journey from diagnosis at age 27, to navigating the consequences of a terminal

illness, to being happily married. Barb uses her humor, vulnerability, honesty, and emotion to empower young people to

make wise choices.” This is the eighth year at Euclid of presenting this assembly to eighth grade students. Every year

we receive positive feedback from students and parents.

This presentation will compliment and enhance the LPS 8th grade Health and Science curriculum. In eighth grade,

students are expected to learn about interpersonal relationships, decision making skills and self awareness, dating and

marriage, teen pregnancy and parenting, reducing the risk of sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancy, the im-

mune system and the spread and prevention of communicable diseases.

Barb and Rick Wise live in Littleton and have presented at many middle and high schools around the country. They

have presented many times to Euclid’s eighth grade class to positive reviews. Barb’s story helps students connect conse-

quences with choices, examine facts about HIV/AIDS, gain optimism for the future, desire real commitment and under-

stand the value of delaying sex until marriage.

Because of the content of this presentation, only eighth grade students will attend. Parents of any sixth, seventh or

eighth grade students are invited to the gym to hear this speaker. If you would like to listen in, please contact Nalisha

Cotter, the principal’s secretary, at 303-347-7811 to let us know so that we can provide seating for adults. An exact date

and time is still to be decided.

Because of the nature of the topic discussed, we understand if you would not want your eighth grade student to attend

this assembly. About one week prior to the assembly an email will be sent to every eighth grade parent. Call the above

number to exclude your child from this assembly.

National Program Evaluator Lisa Rue stated, “During interviews with families, parents recall the day their student heard

the presentation because it initiated a family conversation over dinner – now that’s a powerful story.”
