Who is this Civil Society Brexit Project: Information for?
This guide is written for people with learning disabilities
who live in Scotland.
This guide gives information aboutthe European Union. It alsoexplains why the UK is going toleave the European Union.
Europe is a part of the world thatincludes 50 different countries.

The European Union is a group of28 countries that are all in Europe.It began after World War Two tohelp countries work together andnot fight anymore.

The European Union is sometimescalled the EU.
At first, the EU only made rulesabout business and trade.

Now it also makes rules on a widerange of issues. These include:
• transport
• the rights you have when you buy something
• work/jobs
• people moving to other countries
Why is the UK leaving the European Union?

Some people in the UK wanted toleave the European Union. They didnot want UK laws to be made inother countries.
They thought that the EuropeanUnion cost too much money. Theythought that it was bad forbusinesses in the UK.

Some people did not like peoplefrom other countries in theEuropean Union being allowed tolive in the UK.
Other people wanted to stay in theEuropean Union. They thought itwas good to have laws from theEuropean Union. They thoughtstaying in the European Union wasbest for British people.
The UK government decided to leteveryone vote on whether weshould leave the European Unionor not.
This voting was called the EUReferendum. It was held on 23June 2016.

People in the UK voted to leave theEuropean Union. The number ofvotes to leave the European Unionwere only a few more than thenumber of votes to stay in.
In Scotland and Northern Ireland,most people voted to stay in theEuropean Union. In other parts ofthe UK, they wanted to leave it.
The UK leaving the EuropeanUnion is often called BREXITbecause ‘Britain is exiting the EU’.
