“The Morning Walk”

“Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later.”

(Romans 8:18)

At first, I struggled with the earlier than usual wake-up time. Next came the expected but unwelcomed heat and

humidity of the summer’s early dawn. At first thirty minutes seemed like an eternity. Boring, circling the ball dia-mond with little human interaction. A rabbit or two, a song in the air (were they mockingbirds?), and the rising sun

greeted me as if to say, “You’ve got to be kidding!”

Thirty minutes now exceed one hour plus. Not just additional time walking, but the “plus” of discovering the newness of each day. A close-

ness to nature, God’s good creation. Fellow walkers, joggers, and bicyclists now greet me with a friendly “good morning.” An elderly man recently remarked, “Sure is hot this morning. Heard on the radio that it’s already 84 degrees!” Deer glance toward me, momentarily staring

at me, before they gracefully retreat into the woods.

Six in the morning still comes too early, the sun emerging in the sky a minute or two later each mid-summer day morning. But, now I greet

it’s brightness with a smile and gladness of heart.

So what has changed? Certainly not the weather (as hot as ever!), the walking path (still two miles long!), or the flora and fauna. What has

changed was that I changed. Four miles seems shorter than the original two. A bulky T-shirt is now a V-neck for easy removal. This morn-ing’s walk seemed to end with abundant energy and dry fabric to spare.

Several days ago, I noticed that my focus, my thoughts and above all, my attitude, were beginning to change. The words of the Apostle Paul

from Romans 8:18 ran through my head: Today’s suffering leads to God’s glory revealed to us.

Those words reminded me of Transitional Ministry. Does God want me to focus less on what I see to experience God’s glory? I believe that

to be the case. I’m reminded of words from my past experience as an athletic trainer and coach, which remind us: ”No pain, no gain.” Or, “The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.”

For some, the transition time at Covenant is filled with fear of the unknown, concern over loss, and realized or imagined pain. For others, the opposite is true. Opportunities abound. The Chinese have a symbol for the word “crisis,” which translated into English requires two

words: danger and opportunity.

Our Lord faced His and our crisis on the cross of Calvary. He accepted the danger and paid the price to redeem our sinful li ves. God’s son

gives us an opportunity to experience a rich and full life.

Whether it’s a morning walk or another daily activity, spend time in the moment, filled with the awesome presence and love of God. I hope you will find the time worthwhile and a blessing.

A Note from Mutual Ministries

The staff birthday celebration in August is for Joanna Thornton, our very talented keyboardist, pian-ist, and accompanist. Happy Birthday wishes and God’s blessings to you, Joanna.

Sincere thanks and appreciation are extended to Laura Williams for her 3- 1/2 years of service

as janitor at Covenant. We wish her well in all her future endeavors. Thanks to Laura for her con-

tinuing volunteer service with Covenant’s Audio/Visual ministry. Laura, we appreciate the many ways you have served and continue to serve at covenant. God’s blessings to you!

I N R E L A T I O N S H I P . . . B Y G I N N Y B U S C H B O M

This month brought several opportunities for me to look at Covenant through new eyes. That is a wonderful

thing! Some of the things that began to alter my thinking were the long range plan leadership key mini -retreat,

the election of the call committee members, and the traditional service idea sharing meetings.

Through meetings, emails, phone calls, and conversations, I started seeing opportunities “knocking” all around.

There has long been a call within our walls to reach those not yet here and I hold that purpose close, however, I

also see that as a call to reach those already here, who aren’t really here. I’m talking about the large portion of our membe rs

who want a deeper relationship with Christ and Christian community, but haven’t gotten there yet.

Covenant’s mission states, “Covenant Lutheran Church joins with God in creating Christ -centered community where grace hap-

pens and people are equipped and sent to serve.”

Covenant’s Vision is to be a Faithful Church:

- Faithful to the Great Commission, (that we make new disciples, Matthew 28: 16-20)

- Faithful to the Great Commandment, (that we love one another and the world around us, John 13:33 -35)

My new mantra is “opportunity”. I plan to spend the rest of this year consistently looking at our mission and vision and look ing

for opportunities to: show grace, equip myself and others to serve, make a new disciple or two, and love one another. Most

importantly, I’ll continue to pray that God’s will for Covenant is fulfilled in everything we do.

In His Service,

“We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.”

(Romans 8:28)

Children’s Church Leaders and Assistants Workshop

A Children’s Church Leaders workshop will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2009 from 9:30 am–12:00 noon in the Com-

munity Room. All current Children’s Church adult leaders and Jr. and Sr. High youth assistants, as well as anyone interested in

learning about Children’s Church and considering becoming one of our leaders or assistants, are invited to attend a morning

full of learning and sharing teaching techniques and new ideas, and previewing some new materials for the Children’s Church

program.

Children’s Church is a special time for worship, learning and singing for all children age 2 through 2 nd graders during the 11:00

am church service. During the Pastor’s sermon time, the children are dismissed to the Community Room where the adult

leader and several assistants teach a Bible story object lesson, sing songs and sometimes do a simple art project. Recently,

there have been requests to possibly expand the program to be included at the 8:00 am worship service.

We encourage all current leaders and assistants, as well as anyone interested in joining us as a Children’s Church leader or

assistant, to attend. We especially invite parents of children age 2 through 2nd grade to consider becoming a leader. If you are

curious and just want to find out more about the Children’s Church program, please come to the workshop, and learn what it’s

all about.

If you have any questions, or would like to attend the workshop, please contact Martha Steele at

[email protected]) or 281-256-9146.

Stewardship of Prayer

This month’s article is an ode to prayer. It is a big thank you to the members of Covenant’s Prayer Chain. It is an

acknowledgement of grace shared….

OK, so I had a health scare last month…. I heard the dreaded word - biopsy - and I kind of freaked out around the

edges… well, maybe more than just the edges! I endured the discomfort of the tests and I did my usual number – built a wall to protect myself (yes, I have read The Shack!) Anyway, four days into a two week wait, I realized that I

was in over my head, I tore down the wall, and emailed an SOS to the prayer chain. This is what I learned:

It is much easier to ask for prayers for someone else. When you have to ask for prayers for yourself, it means that you know you are

not in control, that you have to take down a wall or remove a mask

or (shudder the thought!) admit to vulnerability.

I took the time to slow down and really look at the roses, experi-

ence all the wonderful blessings that flow from God’s grace into my senses. Breathed in his grace through the wind in the leaves, the

sunlight on the branches, the blessings of strawberries - one of

God’s greatest (and juiciest) gifts.

I worried over telling my kids. I called my sister and asked her opin-

ion – she said she wouldn’t bother telling them - it might be nothing and they would worry unnecessarily. Then I thought about my sis-

ter’s walls (which, I think, might be higher than mine. She is an

original pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps kind of strong woman) and decided to tell my kids anyway. (If I had followed my sister’s

advice, I would have missed sharing my life with Kristin and Stefan,

would have missed their prayers, their reassurances, their giving of

God’s grace.)

But, more than all these, I realized that there were 50+ brothers and sisters in Christ right here at Covenant praying for me (and I

don’t even know most of their names… although God did nudge a

couple of them to contact me and it lightened my load and brought a smile or tears of understanding) and through their gifts of prayer, I

felt surrounded by His grace. If I had stayed with my usual wall-it-in stance, I would have missed God’s grace

flowing through each of them.

So, what does all of this have to do with stewardship? I know of 50+ members of Covenant who have a wonderful

gift, and they are willing to share that gift! How many more share this gift? Do you have the gift of prayer? This is just one example of the many and varied gifts our Father bestows on us. How many lives will you touch by allowing

God’s grace to flow through you? When it comes time for the Time & Talents campaign in September, will you use

your gifts? Will you find your place and sign up?

LIFT SUMMER ARTS CAMP – AUGUST 3-7

With one week left for regis-

tration, we already have 50+

kids registered for our first ever LIFT Summer Arts Camp!

During this exciting week of camp, the kids are going to learn how

God created people, colors, music, and

movement. The camp will allow kids to explore and grow in several areas of artistic interest.

We have an excellent team of volunteer leaders who are making this camp happen. Jenny Krummel and

Larry Bose are working with the photography class. Rob Smith will be teaching the kids how to cartoon.

Pastor Brad will be leading a group in drama. I will be

working with kids on vocal music. We have also teamed up with some individuals outside the church to

help lead two areas. Cathy Sneedon is an experienced

art teacher that will be teaching a group of kids about painting. We are also working with the Dance Factory

Studio to help us teach dance and movement. There are many other volunteers who are working in “behind-

the-scenes” and supportive roles, including Margo

Faulkner, Sue Tabbert, Janett Broddle, Cristi Dungan, Justin Howerton, and Debbie Kendall.

As a conclusion to the camp, on Sunday, August 9 at 11:00 am, the kids will be leading our worship service

and displaying the art they created during their week

at camp. This will be a time when parents and the whole church family can see the creative talents that

God has gifted our kids with. We are expecting an amazing week seeing how God is working in the lives

of these young people!

One of the most exciting things about the LIFT Summer

Arts Camp is that a majority of the kids registered are

not from Covenant! This will be a huge opportunity to be a blessing to our community and show them that

we care. We have kept the cost of camp very afford-able ($15/child) to give everyone a chance to come. If

you would like to assist us in this ministry, please con-

sider making a donation to the "LIFT fund."

The Community of Hope Manicure Ministry

The Community of Hope Manicure Ministry is a small group of

volunteers who meet at Oakmont Nursing Home on the third

Saturday of each month to do “light” manicures for some of

the residents. Our presence there is appreciated, and the

time we spend there visiting and giving manicures is mean-

ingful and uplifting to us.

Please consider joining our group. “On-

the- job training” is given. You may also

help with a cash donation that would aid

us in purchasing supplies. Please contact

The Quest for Authentic Manhood

The Quest for Authentic Manhood is a captivating journey designed to help you understand your mascu-

line identity and make the pursuit of faithful, biblical manhood a lifelong priority. It offers a clear and

compelling definition of what it means to be a man, extends the challenge to develop a personalized

manhood plan, and then inspires and equips you to incorporate the Quest into the fabric of your everyday

life. Pastor Fred will be supporting the Quest by helping to ensure these non-denominational materials

are considered consistent with Lutheran understanding of the scripture.

Subjects include:

Seasons of a Man’s Life

Uncovering the Wounds of Manhood

A Definition of Authentic Manhood

Plotting a Personal Course to Manhood

Deepening the Marriage Relationship

Raising Sons and Daughters

And ... much more

What Men at Covenant are saying about The Quest for Authentic Manhood:

This is a great opportunity for anyone dedicated to improving their skills as a man, husband, and fa-

ther. No matter where you are in your personal journey, you will benefit from this experience. I highly

recommend it.

- Sig Cornelius

This course explores so many different issues that face men in today’s society and the uncertainty of who

men think they should be. It gives biblical direction on how to become an authentic man of God.

- Ken Winkelmann

The course was great for getting to better know church men, and to strengthen our character (personal;

family, job, hobbies, etc) plus our spiritual knowledge and daily actions. It helped me to take my man-

hood responsibilities more seriously.

- Bill Broddle

The Quest for Authentic Manhood is a good program for a man who wants to start working with other men

on learning how to be a better son, husband and father. I found it very helpful. -

Stories From the FieldBy Pastor Brad

I am writing on the heels of the National Youth Gathering that was held in New Orleans. It was AMAZING! I was actually working with the gathering this year, and in doing so, it gave me a whole new appreciation for the event. I even got to hear stories that I probably otherwise would not have heard. I want to share two of them with you! At one of our projects, a group had come in late. They apologized to the group for being so late, but it was the reason they were late that really struck me hard. They went to grab breakfast at a little hole in the wall diner. This diner was really backed up. There was a hostess, a waitress, and one cook. That was it. It was apparent to this group that they needed help, so they offered their services. The high school students

quickly went to work filling drink glasses, taking orders, and then asking if they could help in the kitchen, where it was apparent that the big problem was. Two students went back into the kitchen to find a cook hard at work but struggling. She couldn’t read! So the students took time to read her the orders that were coming in so that she could get them out faster. AMAZING! God at work! The second story is about another project in which students were hearing about the levee system in the city. Halfway through the presentation, my volunteer noticed a man in scrubs come in and sit in the back. During the Q&A session at the end of the presentation, this man stood up and asked for the microphone. He said he was a doctor, and he had

heard about the students in the city and our gathering. He didn’t know where to go, but knew the speaker in that room, so he decided to come there. He explained that he was a surgeon who helped do surgeries on people in the airport during Katrina. He told of the conditions he had to work in. And he said, it was necessary for him, on his lunch break, to come down and thank the students for being here. It was a miracle, he said. A miracle. We heard that often while we were in New Orleans. Miracles don’t have to be about people rising up from mats, and blind people being healed. For these people, we were a miracle. A miracle that people cared. Perhaps we need to rethink what a miracle really is about.

Life Hurts, God HealsNew Start Time

This spring we are proud to be offering this 8-step program for students with pain and addiction. Right now, there are students around us who are

desperately hurting - hurting from the pain of a broken home, struggles with depression, abusive relationships, loss, and more. Life Hurts, God Heals is a

program to help those students in pain. We will be the only church in our area that will be offering this program and will join hundreds of thousands of others

around the country who are already offering Life Hurts, God Heals.

If you are familiar with the 12-step program called Celebrate Recovery, then you may understand how Life Hurts God Heals works. Life Hurts God Heals is

an 8-step small group biblical study written by John Baker, Doug Fields and Megan Hutchinson, providing lifelong tools to help students heal from their

hurts.

Any teenage student is welcome! We are excited that Cy-Fair ISD has agreed to promote this to their counselors in their schools as well. It is a wonderful outreach opportunity for the ministry of Covenant Lutheran Church. NOTE THIS CHANGE IN START TIME! We will be holding informational meetings and training nights throughout the fall term. More information to follow!

Interested in being a small group leader? We need adults who care! If you are, please see Pastor Brad for more information.

Fall Sunday School Begins SoonSeeking Teachers for Fall/Spring -2009/10

Mission: “Renewing the church, through the faith of our youth.”

Summer is almost half over and it’s time for us to begin thinking about our fall and spring semesters in Christian Education. This fall and spring we will be using an all-new curriculum called “Buzz!” Group’s Buzz will give your son or daughter a strong theological framework as to who God is. Over two years, children will know and understand eight foundational truths about God—He is loving, perfect, forgiving, faithful, real, giving, powerful, and good. Every quarter, each age level focuses on a different attribute of God through unique, fun themes and age-appropriate Bible lessons.

Our classes will once again be divided by age groups: Toddlers, Pre-K-K, 1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades. They will come together before breaking up into their classes for an introduction for the day, a time that will include song, prayer, and taking up an offering. Parents are then welcome to stay for an all-new Sunday school class especially for parents. 5th graders will continue in their own class, as well as junior and senior high.

We need teachers! If you are interested in helping to teach a class this fall and spring, please email Pastor Brad or come by for a visit. The curriculum is fun and engaging, and easy to plan! Come and see what all the Buzz is about!

At Covenant, we NEVER want a young person not to go on a trip because their family can’t afford it. We have a special fund set aside called the Scholarship fund to help. Well, that fund is getting pretty low. Would you like to help sponsor a child this year? If so, that would be GREAT, and we appreciate any donation you can give. Just place your donation to the scholarship fund in the offering plate and mark it youth scholarship fund, and again, thank you for helping a young person attend one of our many retreats and gatherings!

Small Group Ministry Once a month our high school students will meet in small groups with two adult leaders. These meetings can happen

anywhere at any time during the month that works for each small group. Why small groups? The primary biblical

purpose for small groups is fellowship. Our greatest desire for our small groups is that it is a place where believing

students can connect with one another and form a relationship with two significant adults. The second biblical purpose

for small groups is discipleship. Each time they meet, they will discuss biblical passages and the application of those

passages to their lives. DIVE, retreats, and Sunday morning worships are all large by design. Crowds can be inviting

because requirements aren’t high: just show up. In our world, superficial friendships, casual interactions, and non-

biblical values can dominate. Some of the benefits of small groups are: students can be known and accepted for who

they are, students can be verbal and discuss important issues, students can be accountable to spiritual mentors and

challenged to spiritually grow, and students can get personalized applications of biblical truths and find real help for the

real problems they face. We hope your son/daughter will participate in our new small group ministry this next school

year. We will be sending more information regarding our new small group ministry, so be on the lookout.

Confirmation StartupConfirmation orientation is set for next month, September 9th from 7-8 p.m. in

the Community Room. We are excited about new opportunities for families and

students this year! So all current 6-8 graders and their parents are asked

to attend.

What happens to kids at Covenant when they graduate from high school?  Well, what happened to YOU when YOU graduated from high school?  In many congregations, as well as ours, the only place for them was to suddenly become adults – attend worship and do adult things in congregational life.  The fact is, many kids aren’t ready for that step.  They feel out of place and many, quite literally, ARE out of place when they head off to college.  This summer we decided to turn that around.

More of our college students are sticking close to home for their first two or more years of college.  Other kids come home on breaks or for the summer.  All of them have friends.  And all of them are living that chaotic and stressful time of life between being “adults and not-yet-adults.”  The KAIROS group is an effort to bring kids together with and for one another.

KAIROS is from a Greek word which means the “fullness of time”, it means a “critical time” when lives are transformed.  The challenge we put to our college kids when gathering them together in the KAIROS fellowship is that they make the most of this critical time.  We want to grow leaders in the church, not just people who attend.  And we don’t want to lose this critical age group until later in their lives.  We need their energy and idealism and they need our care, support and encouragement.

Our Kairos group has moved its meeting time to Wednesday nights from 8:00-10:00 p.m. during the summer. High School seniors who have graduated are welcome to come!
