إِخَفاٌء إِدَؼاٌم َو إِْظَهاٌر َفَقطْ إِخَفاٌء إِدَؼاٌم َو إِْظَهاٌر َفَقطْ When stopping on meem before the letters of the alphabet,

but not before the alif layyinah, for he who is intelligent

are three rules for he who would endear them to memory,

and they are the rules of Ikhfā, Idghām and Iẓhār only.

and name it the Smaller Idghām my dears.

•The Letter: مم

• The Meem is doubled (pronounced with Ghunnah)

• Only occurs between 2 words

• Functionally identical to Meem Mushaddah



IDGHĀM due to assimilation of 2 meems

MITHLAYN due to 2 identical letters

ṢAGHῙR due to 1st Meem unvowelled, 2nd vowelled

ٌَّهْ الُِث اإلِْظَهاُر ِفً الَبِق ٌَّهْ َو الثَّ الُِث اإلِْظَهاُر ِفً الَبِق َو الثَّ

ٌَّهْ َها َشْفِو ٌَّهْ ِمْن أَحُرٍؾ َو َسمِّ َها َشْفِو ِمْن أَحُرٍؾ َو َسمِّ

The third is Iẓhār which occurs with the balance

of the letters, and termed Labial Iẓhār in our

parlance.



• The Remaining 26 Letter

the first is its manifest articulation, and should be understood better,

Occurring before fourteen letters, so learn them well,

from this mnemonic: Seek your goal and vain pursuits repel.

The second is its assimilation, which in fourteen does exist,

and likewise, facilitate your recollection of them from this:

Be meritorious, maintain relations for success, and host those who are beneficent;

Shun ill estimations of others, and frequent the noble ones for munificence.

All the madd rules are built upon the 3 basic madd letters:

Unvowelled Alif preceded by Fatḥa قىاؿى Unvowelled Yā preceded by Kasrah ًقيلى Unvowelled Wāw preceded by Dhamma يػىقيوؿي Mnemonic: ا نيوًحيهى Its duration: 2 ḥarakas [referred to as القىصر ]


Even small mistakes in Basic Madd changes meanings !!

أىنىاٍ “I” أىنَّا “Verily we” أىفَّ “that”

ٍذنىا أىخى “we took” أىخىٍذفى “the women took”


The Basic Madd is the most common type of madd, with examples in every Qurʼānic verse !!

There are 4 additional types of madd that follow the pattern of the Basic Madd:

1. MADD LĪN Unvowelled Wāw

preceded by Fatḥa يىوـى Unvowelled Yā preceded

by Fatḥa بىينى Its duration: 2- ḥarakas

Stopping on tanwīnfatḥa is articulated as a Basic Madd Alif

ا / شىكيورنا بًنىاءن / مىاءن / ىيدن Exceptionwords

ending with ػة are pronouned with unvowelled hā on stopping

رىحمىةن نًعمىةن

4. LESSER CONNECTING MADD [مىد الصِّلىة الصُّغرىل]

The attached 3rd person masculine pronoun [ ـهِ /ـهُ ] plus the word [ َِهِذه] also follows the basic maddwhen

it is vowelled and between 2 vowelled letters


EXCEPTIONS TO THE LESSER CONNECTING MADD [مىد الصِّلىة الصُّغرىل] There are 5 exceptions to this rule according to the Ḥafṣ reading
