DEAR PARISHIONERS...

HAPPY EASTER! We have arrived! It is good to gather this day to celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord, to embrace again the mystery of dying and rising with Christ. Our Christian story does not end at the empty tomb. We take this good news out into the world. Who are you going to tell today?

Our Christian challenge is to live Easter today and every day. Our Easter season lasts for 50 days, until Ascension and Pentecost. This is ten days longer than our Lenten journey. It is a good time to take our new spiritual growth and desire from Lent and extend into our Easter lives and to eternity.

This past Lent we offered some special prayer opportunities such as our first Parish Mission, Fr. Luke’s talk on prayer This One’s For You, Soup and Study which focused on Church history and Oremus, our "let us pray" study. We held several Bible studies, passed out 750 copies of the book Your God Is Too Boring, hosted a talk Praying as a Couple, and more. We offered prayer opportunities such as Holy Hour, Stations of the Cross, and Reconciliation.

Special thanks to the many people who helped with Holy Week and Easter services. I am amazed at how people step up and help in so many different ways. Also thanks to the many, many people who helped with the fish fry. So many good people, so much to be done, so many desserts made. Thank you.

I encourage you to live as Easter people, take the “good news” out into the world, share something

about your Easter with someone. Happy Easter!

Youth Ministry at St. Raphael Parish Thank you, for supporting our youth in so many ways this year! In the fall many of you were invited to pray for our high school teens throughout the year and you may have chosen one or two names to pray for. The Sisters of Mercy are also praying for a large group of teens. We know that prayer

must be at the center of all we do for our Lord. We are called to be faithful, God will make us successful. As you continue to pray for our youth please also pray for safe summer trips. The first will be a weekend conference for high school youth on July 24-26, Steubenville North and the second will be our annual mission trip on July 18-24. April High School Events: Sunday, April 19 “Making Moral Choices” Join us for the 5:00 pm Mass, dinner to follow then look

at how we make moral decisions in our lives through individual and group challenges. MIDDLE SCHOOL EVENTS AND COMMUNITY SERVICE

Come to the Feast of Heaven and Earth! On the weekends of April 11/12, April 25/26, and May 16/17, 85 children will receive

Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament for the very first time! Families have been preparing

for First Eucharist since January. Preparation includes 8 home sessions where

parents and children learn more about the Mass and Jesus’ love for us. In addition,

all families attended two parent/child classes. One class was a church tour led by

some very special tour guides: Fr. Michael, Fr. Doug, Deacon John Ingala, Karen

Dean and Paula Rieder. We completed our preparation with a retreat in March where

families baked 240 biscuits for our homebound parishioners to be delivered on Holy Thursday, and children also

created a chalice to remind them of Jesus’ true presence in the Eucharist. Please continue to hold our families in

prayer as we welcome our children to the Lord’s Table! If you are interested in learning more about Sacramental

Reflecting on the Scriptures (Acts 10:34-43, Ps. 118:1-23, Col. 3:1-4, John 20:1-9)

We are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree. This man God raised on the third day and granted that he be visible, not to all the people, but to us, the witnesses chosen by God in advance, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commissioned us to preach to the people and testify that he is the one appointed by God as judge of the living and the dead. To him all the prophets bear witness, that everyone who believes in him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name.” --- Acts 10: 37-43

Christ is risen! Alleluia, Alleluia! Today I rejoice because my Lord conquered sin and death---for me.

Jesus’ death and resurrection is my own death and resurrection through the paschal mystery. I, too, die and rise to new life through my life in Christ. As St. Paul states in his letter to the Colossians: “Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory.” And that is certainly cause for joy and sharing that joy with others. Some day, I, too, will be held in God’s embrace and living life, eternally, with Him. The little deaths I experience may hurt deeply now, but they’re not to be feared, because the big death which they point to, has already been experienced by Christ and transformed by the Resurrection. If I watch and listen closely, I catch glimpses of that glorious life in my present lived experience.

The power of the image of the empty tomb is that it reminds me that where death should be, I find the door open to new possibilities. Death does not have the final word---it does not destroy life and love.

Just like Mary of Magdala, Peter, and John---the first witnesses at the tomb---Christians of every generation are also witnesses of the living, risen Christ. They are blessed because they “have not seen but have believed”. The power of Christians witnessing is based on a personal encounter with the risen Jesus. This authentic personal encounter propels us to proclaim joyously: He is risen! Pope Benedict XVI asserted, “Being a Christian is not the result of an ethical choice or a lofty idea, but the encounter with an event, a person, which gives life a new horizon and a decisive direction.”

This life-changing encounter with the risen Lord is not for just a few, but an invitation to all of us. Is it possible for me to have an encounter of the risen Christ? Yes! What do I need to do? Show up. Jesus tirelessly waits for me. It is for me to show up, let down the walls, the façade, and be authentically me, open to the Lord, fully and completely , listening, paying attention. Pope Francis extends to us a challenging invitation: “I invite all Christians, everywhere, at this very moment, to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ, or at least an openness to letting him encounter them; I ask all of you to do this unfailingly each day.”

On this Easter Day, let us be bold in asking for this renewed encounter with the risen Lord. Let us desire to join

with the many who have not seen, but have believed---because they have encountered Him. Let us be

witnesses to our generation! Let us go and tell!!

Easter Whereas in Lent we repented, in Eastertide we rejoice. Whereas we fasted, now we feast. Whereas we gave alms, now

we give witness in all manner of ways to all people that Christ is truly risen, the old world order is passed away and the

reign of God is begun. Begun in the newly baptized, newly oiled believers who have taken their place at Christ’s table.

Begun again in us who were baptized and chrismated long ago or last

Easter.

In Central Europe, it’s customary to spritz people with water on

Easter Monday, to remember baptism, to make merry and in some cultures,

even to choose a spouse! The bathed and anointed church is the risen

Christ’s spouse. Let the wedding feast begin!

Lent was 40 days, the season of sorrow and striving and training.

But Eastertide is 50 days, the season of joy and celebrating and feasting!

Fifty days for our delight! Fifty days to sing the song of saints and angels:

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

The earth trembles and moves. Light cracks the darkness. A sound like rushing wind

WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES – “…to rise from the dead.” In some ancient belief systems sleep was understood to be a ‘little death’ and rising from sleep was much like rising from the dead. Today, however, based on scientific studies of what happens when we sleep, we know that when we wake up in the morning we are still the same living person that we were when we went to sleep the night before. Another example might be health care professionals who bring people back from the brink of death. Certainly a woman cured of stage four breast cancer may feel that she has experienced a kind of rising from the dead when she is again able to do the things she enjoyed before her illness. But even though she has a new appreciation for life she, too, is still the same living person she was before her brush with death. On the other hand, consider the woman who teaches a ‘Family Literacy’ course for newly-arrived immigrants, many fleeing places where war and terror are daily realities. When asked how her course differs from “English as a Second Language” she explains that, while she teaches English and reading to the children, when working with the adults she not only teaches language skills but also prepares them to be their children’s primary teachers, assessing needs and adapting materials that they can later use themselves. While it might be simpler to teach the adults along with the children, she doesn’t want to deprive them of their role as first teacher. Her goal is not only to improve their lives but to actually change them, and because of her sensitivity and care her adult students are able to rise up to new life as parents and teachers in their own homes. For these people life will never be the same. Their previous life of pain and loss has died and now, because of this young woman and others like her, they are able to rise up from the dark tomb of fear and death into the life-giving light of possibility. “…to rise from the dead.” How do we understand Jesus’ words today?

Update on "Renewed in Faith ...Enhancing the Ministry"

Last Easter, we unveiled our new Crucifix. Then in fall we reconstructed the sanctuary level,

and the choir area and installed new carpeting in our Worship space and throughout our

building. We moved to LED lighting, added a permanent hearing loop in our church, chapel

and hall. Next we upgraded our sound to digital system. Right after Christmas, on Epiphany,

we completed the tabernacle space in the Reredos Wall. Last month we had our first mass,

since I have been here, that did not have folding chairs in church, for we finished the pew

project. We have refurbished our pews, added additional pews, kneelers, and chairs.

We have come a long way since last Easter! Thank you all for your help

and generosity in our "Renewed in Faith ...Enhancing the Ministry"

project. Thank you for continuing support of the parish and of our

outreach, in addition to donations for these updates to our church. Our church support has

remained consistent, and donations to the Bishop's Appeal and other charities are going

well. Just last January over $6,000 was raised for our medical and dental mission trip to the

Dominican Republic. Lots of peanut butter and tuna was brought in our by our youth in the

challenge to help stock the community food pantry with protein. Thank you!

We are moving into phase 3 of our phased renovation. We have ordered new multimedia

equipment, camera's, cabling, recording equipment and much more. We are hoping to begin

installing this spring. We are looking to air condition Good Samaritan Hall, the library and

some offices, as well as update to a Digital Sign by the street. Oh that people could actually

see the Mass times when driving by, that we evangelize to those drivers by posting good Christian messages, and

let the community know the latest events at St. Raphael.

Thank you for your past donations and know that you are invited to move forward with us on phase 3. I invite you

to consider a donation either on line at raphael.org or by check. My hope is to completely fund these changes and

finish up the work this year while we continue to focus on prayer and evangelization. Can you help us out with
