TAKING ON MORE RESPONSIBILITY and stepping up to the leadership plate brings with it a number of challenges. A challenge that I face daily is finding the time for personal reflection. Taking more than a few minutes to think about my day, the choices I made and their impact on others, and the lessons I may have learned seems like a luxury my busy schedule will not allow. However, it is absolutely necessary not just for personal sanity but in order to continue to be an effective leader on my college campus and for 4CS.

In Daily Disciplines of Leadership, Douglas Reeves outlines five questions to ask yourself and recommends keeping a leadership journal as a way of encouraging “structured reflection”. I recommend giving this activity a try, especially when you are dealing with tough leadership issues or find that your leadership activities and priorities may not be perfectly aligned.

I am excited about the opportunities and challenges that come with this leadership role. The 4CS Executive Board is striving to improve the organization, build relationships with our community college colleagues, and provide the resources to help you effectively participate in the governance process at the college, district, and state level. Your input is appreciated and there are many avenues available for sharing your thoughts and ideas including contact with your local area representatives, participation in the classified listserve, attendance at annual conferences and meetings, and submitting articles for this newsletter.

Thank you for all the work you do each and every day to make our community colleges such incredible places to work and study.

THE CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY COLLEGES CLASSIFIED SENATE (4CS) is a public benefit non-profit organization. As the 4CS Board of Directors (Executive Board) of the non-profit corporation, we are charged with the responsibility to carry out the directives and goals of our members, the Classified Senates at each of the colleges and districts. Through the Supporting Memberships and Sponsors programs we can better serve our members and the Community College System of California. We sincerely appreciate your involvement and support. The benefits of becoming a Supporting Member or Sponsor can be found in our Mission statement and throughout our Web site (www.ccccs.org). Getting Connected!

SACRAMENTO CITY COLLEGE CLASSIFIED SENATE in association with Staff Development started a Connections (Service Culture) Quality Service Training program for Classified Staff on the campus in 1999. Since then, the Los Rios Community College District has picked up on the merit this training provides to the Classified staff, promoting good customer service and a positive mind-set by offering a Classified Leadership Academy to all district classified employees. The Connections training includes several wonderful videos:

    • Who Moved My Cheese?• FISH!• Fun Is Good• The Guest• Invisible Man Meets the Mummy• Celebrate What's Right with the World• Focus Your Vision

No matter how many times you see these videos you will always feel better about your day. I recently viewed Celebrate Whatʼs Right with the World last week, probably my 5th screening, and came away with a positive, up-lifted spirit; I always seem to find a “life” connection.

If your college is in need of a training program, I highly recommend the videos listed above.

Let’s connectAs new North Vice President for 4CS, I look forward to developing a strong network with the Classified leaders in my region. One of my ultimate goals is to help develop an annual opportunity for us to bring all the Classified Senate leaders from the northern part of the state together for a day long meeting. However, my immediate goal is to connect with you. I want to listen to your ideas and suggestions, find out about the issues you face and the successes you are having and learn more about your senates.

Chaffey College approves contract position for Classified Senate

IN AN ENCOURAGING SHOW OF SUPPORT, Chaffey College administration approved a .475 contract administrative assistant position for the Classified Senate. This position

was recommended for the last two years through the Program and Services Review process and was approved for recruitment in the 05/06 fiscal year. Chaffey College Classified Senate is enjoying a period of renewed growth and increased District support.

As an example of this increased support, Chaffey College administration approved and funded ten classified participants to attend the 2005 Classified Leadership Institute. Further funding was provided for the creation of a Senate office in a shared location with the Academic Senate. Our advocacy efforts paid off and the classified senate is continuing to be a strong participant in the governance process at Chaffey.

Established in 1981, Chaffey College ClassifiedSenate was the first classified senate organizedin Southern California.

    Governance Organization Spotlight

    Next issue: Community College

    League of California (CCLC)

THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS of the California Community Colleges sets policy and provides guidance for the 72 districts and 109 colleges which constitute the system. The 17-member Board, appointed by the stateʼs Governor, formally interacts with state and federal officials and other state organizations. The Board of Governors selects a Chancellor for the system. The Chancellor, through a formal process of consultation, brings recommendations to the Board, which has the legislatively granted authority to develop and implement policy for the colleges. Additionally, each of the 72 community college districts in the state has a locally-elected Board of Trustees, responsive to local community needs and charged with the operations of the local colleges. The governance system of the California Community Colleges is one which uses processes of “shared governance.” In March 1988, the Board of Governors adopted a process known as”consultation,” through which a council composed of representatives of selected community college institutional and organizational groups, assist in development and recommendation of policy to the Chancellor and Board of Governors.

“It s̓ been an honor and a privilege to represent classified employees on the Board of Gover-nors. Being able to provide input from the classified perspective has been both productive and reward-

ing. Although we, as classified staff, have many different jobs and often work in the background, the services we provide are essential to the educational experience and success of our community college students.”

Southern LeadershipBy Pat Murray, Classified Senate President, Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College DistrictSoutheast Region 1 Representative

YOU MAY BE FAMILIAR WITH THIS PHRASE, “Leaders donʼt create followers, they create other Leaders.” This is truly the case in the southern area. Our area has been short of region representatives and it has been our local senateʼs hope to change that. However, because of the leadership experiences offered at the Classified Leadership Institute and the cohesive relationship connecting our local senates to the state executive board, there are now more representatives from the south than ever before. In addition, one benefit of participating on the executive board is that our campus can host one of the state executive board meetings! Grossmont College in El Cajon will be the location for the March California Community Colleges Classified Senate executive board meeting.

When I returned home from the conference, I was energized and hopeful that I could connect with the San Diego area classified senate leaders. Immediately the contact became a springboard to meet Desiree VanSaan, the Classified Senate president from San Diego City College. She instituted her groupʼs first ʻClassified Convocationʼ. She invited me to share information about 4CS, encourage the staff, and build enthusiasm for their organization. The event was also an opportunity to raise funds with a 50-50 drawing, and a chance for me to encourage attendance at the next Classified Leadership Institute. I was equally excited when Wanda Maxwell, senate president-elect from Southwestern College, responded with a request to attend their first ʻClassified Leaders Retreatʼ. On both occasions I spoke to the group about how leadership changes our environments, and how the students will also be inspired by courageous campus employees.

There is no greater compliment than when a student says “I want to do what you do for a living…” The secret is, it may not necessarily be the tasks that we do, but how we execute them with a joyful spirit, how we collaborate with so many others on our campuses, and how we strive for service that extends beyond ʻjust getting the job doneʼ. When students see these things; energy, collegiality, and service-oriented attitudes, they too will execute their schoolwork and professional careers with similar qualities that will extend to our community. One person can make a difference.

    Thursday - SaturdayJune 8 - 10, 2006

This yearʼs conference will focus on a leadership journey classified staff experience while navigating into their future for the success of community colleges; the positive aspects of classified involvement in participatory (shared) governance, and improving individual leadership effectiveness.

A listserve is a GREAT way to keep in contact and get information. Here are two developed by 4CS for classified staff throughout the state:

    1. 4CS Classified Listserve

Our current listserve is a way for anyone to subscribe to a group email list and submit questions and get feedback.

At present, this listserve has approximately 100 members and anyone can join. Itʼs easy to subscribe. For complete instructions visit the 4CS website at www.ccccs.org.

    2. Classified Senate Presidents Listserve4CS launched a brand new listserve devoted specifically to our Classified Senates in December 2004. This new listserve works in much the same way as our classic version yet is dedicated to senate specific issues. Another key difference is that ONLY Classified Senate Presidents may subscribe by contacting 4CS directly. Once you are added to the listserve you simply ask questions and you will get information from classified senates across the state.
