The heritage of our past gives us a keen eye on the future.

Doing business with the oldest oil company in America with the latest technology ensures your success. Adapting to the changing needs of our customers and inventing new technologies since 1839 gives Schaeffer a special advantage.

In 1839, Schaeffer Manufacturing Company provided greases and oils for wagons trains and steamboats. Times and technology changed and so did Schaeffer. Since then, we’ve developed many of the current concepts in lubrication, including advanced additives for performance, friction modifiers for fuel economy, and synthetics for extended lubricant life.

It is our philosophy to provide advanced lubricants for improved performance, reliability and economy. Knowing where we’ve come from is the best route to the future success of our customers.

- John Schaeffer ShieldsChairman of the Board (4th Generation)

In addition to the proprietary additive packages utilized in Schaeffer’s gear lubricants, we incorporate the use of proven friction reducers and boundary lubricants Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) and Micron Moly. These proven friction reducers provide extra protection to the metal by forming an indestructible long lasting solid lubricant film that is capable of withstanding pressures up to 500,000 psi. This solid lubricant film once plated to the gears and bearings will reduce friction, vibration and wear, thus extending equipment life. Even during extreme shock loading and vibration, Schaeffer’s unique blend of superior quality base oils, proven additive formulations and extreme pressure boundary lubricants provide Schaeffer’s gear lubricants with unmatched load carrying capabilities.

Molybdenum Disulfide & Micron Moly®:Extra Protection Against Wear

“It’s not the cost to buy... It’s the cost to use.”

Schaeffer is pioneering new concepts in lubrication that dramatically reduce twelve month bottom line operating costs. In addition to utilizing the

latest innovation and technology in formulating our state-of-the-art products, we’re also constantly developing strategies designed to maximize our customers’ satisfaction. Our Bottom Line Cost Reduction Program focuses on reducing total maintenance costs. It's not the “cost to buy,” it’s the “cost to use” that matters. Results from this program can reduce lubricant costs significantly.

Case Studies

Schmitt Timber Corp.

Brian’s Truck Shop

Mooneyham Trucking

Case history documents do not constitute a blanket endorsement of any brand of lubricant by the company involved.

When Jeff and Greg, the owners of Schmitt Timber, put Schaeffer’s #315 Simplex Supreme to the test, Greg decided to take the temperatures of the hydraulic system on his wood chopper. This system ran so hot in the summer that it actually cooked the name-brand hydraulic oil in the system. Greg used a heat gun to take the temperatures of his equipment on a day when the ambient temperature was in the high 80’s. Then Greg switched out all of the hydraulic oil to Schaeffer’s #315 Simplex Supreme. Three days later, when the ambient temperature was still averaging in high 80’s, Greg used the same heat gun and shot all temperatures on his equipment the same way. He noticed a 36ºF drop in temperature, prompting him to switch all of his oils over to Schaeffer’s. Greg later admitted that he was going to buy an oil cooler for his hydraulic system, but after switching to Schaeffer’s, he no longer needed an oil cooler!

Brian Thompson has built a business on building an automatic transmission that will handle over 600hp. His transmissions go behind Ford’s Powerstroke series engines. Brian helped design a torque converter and other internal components that allow him to give a 2-year warranty on his transmission while towing 28,000 lbs. every day. Brian sends transmissions all over the country that he has rebuilt.

Brian has tried major brand and aftermarket Synthetic ATFs . Even with straight synthetic ATF, clutches were failing prematurely, glazing over and not holding. (Granted, they are getting worked really hard.) He knew that synthetic oil has much better lubricating value. He determined that something was missing in the these synthetic oils. Brian decided to try Schaeffer’s #204SAT All-Trans Supreme®, the results have been fantastic. Brian ask why Schaeffer’s works so much better. The answer: it is a complete package with the proper base oil (best lubricity) and additives for the clutches to hold (not slip) when engaged so there is very little wear.

David Mooneyham purchased this dump truck and trailer new in 1988 for his trucking company based in Billings, Missouri. The first improvement he noticed was a temperature drop of 15° with the use of #293 Supreme Gear Lube. The original differentials have never been out of their housings & have had no maintenance other than lube changes at approximately. 500,000 mile intervals. Currently these differentials have just over two million miles on them.

Exceeds All Specifications

Today more and more equipment owners are having to buy and stock several types of fluids in order to maintain the different equipment manufacturers’ recommendations. That alone is costly, not to mention risky, if the wrong fluid gets into the wrong equipment.

Schaeffer’s #315 Simplex Supreme Torque Convertor Fluid is meant to be just what the name implies – SIMPLE – the one oil designed to exceed the requirements of all tractor and construction equipment manufacturers.

Superior Base Stock

Simplex Supreme Torque Convertor Fluid is formulated by incorporating severely refined 100% pure paraffin base oils and synthetic base fluids. While many believe oil is oil, there is a great difference between para-synthetic base oils and the lower quality petroleum base oils that can be used in the formulation of tractor transmission hydraulic fluids. Nowhere is this difference more apparent than in agricultural hydraulic and torque converter applications.

Synthetic blend base oils withstand a higher heat range. Excessive heat causes hydraulic hoses to get brittle and leak. Heat, combined with foam, will cause pressure that can also lead to hose breakage. With Simplex, transmissions run cooler and hydraulic response is quicker and smoother.

Superior Additive Package

Schaeffer uses only the highest grade additive package available. This means Simplex Supreme is compatible with any of the other fluids on the market. Therefore, it will not be necessary for you to drain the system to begin using Simplex Supreme. Its compatibility eliminates the problems of commingling fluids.

Longer Equipment Life

Changing tractor designs have put more stress on today’s tractor transmissions. The higher fluid operating temperatures and the heavier loading placed upon final drive units have caused wear in final drive gears to become today’s major area of concern for tractor manufacturers. Schaeffer’s Simplex Supreme Torque Converter Fluid is formulated with a proprietary additive package that greatly improves performance in reducing wear.

Improved Film Strength and E.P. Performance

The following are the results of well known industry Bench Tests. The tests appear in the fluid specifications for John Deere, Massey-Ferguson, Agro-Allis, Case-New Holland and Case-IH. As you can see, Simplex offers significant improvements over previous fluids.

Today’s axles, differentials and final drives operate under increased “power density” loads. These higher loads are the direct result of increased horsepower and torque applied to the power train components. Improved aerodynamics for over-the-road trucks results in less air flow and higher oil temperatures. These conditions result in increasing stress on gearing, bearings and seals. Extreme pressure gear lubricants must protect against oxidation, corrosion, gear-tooth wear and bearing distress.

Schaeffer’s Supreme Gear Lubes are multipurpose, thermally stable and thermally durable para-synthetic gear lubricant. #293 Supreme Synthetic Plus Gear Lubricant SAE 75W-90 is recommended for use in all types of automotive gear drive applications that require a gear oil to operate under severe wide ambient temperature ranges. #293A Supreme Gear Lube No Tack is recommended for use in all types of enclosed industrial gear drives that contain filtration systems where an extreme pressure characteristics are needed. Thermal Stability and High Temperature OxidationOriginal equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are producing high power density engines and are combining these engines with aerodynamic body designs. These design changes have resulted in raising transmission, differential and final drive operating temperatures to the 300ºF range. As a consequence, gear lubricants are subjected to extreme thermal breakdown.
