TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - OCTOBER 8, 2017
I’ve written in the past about Camp Veritas, a one-week Catholic summer camp which uses two local sites: Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh and Camp Lakota in Wurtsboro. You may read more about Camp at www.campveritas.com. There’s no better way to promote Camp Veritas than to hear from the campers themselves. So I’ve asked our young people who took part last summer to share their reflections. Emily Davis, an eighth grade student in St. John School, writes:
I was very nervous yet excited about going to Camp Veritas. I was nervous because I had never been away from my family for a whole week before. I knew five of my friends from SJS would be there, but I was still a little nervous. Once I got to camp I knew I would be fine; everyone seemed like family there. Father George visited us almost every day and the Sisters of Life came to stay with us for the last few days of camp. We went to Rosary, Mass, and Adoration every day. At Camp Veritas, I got to learn a lot more about my faith, and it made my faith much stronger. I would love to go to Camp Veritas next year. It was an amazing experi-ence and I highly recommend it.
Emily’s classmate, Clare Heppes, has this to say:
Camp Veritas was awesome! This year was my second time attending camp. This time I knew what to ex-pect. We had many religious activities such as rosary, adoration, and the Mass. During adoration and Mass we sang many upbeat and catchy songs that made you want to sing along! These songs helped me to feel more involved in the Mass and adoration. Well, balanced with prayer we did many other “campy” activities, too. Some of the highlights were rock climbing, the pow wow, the pool, tennis, volleyball, go karts, low ropes, trust falls, the tire swing, gaga ball and the lake! During these awesome activities I met new friends and made amazing memories. If you are considering going to Camp Veritas, I highly recommend it!
Gabriel Loomis, who is home-schooled, shares this:
I would highly recommend Camp Veritas to Catholic teens. Last summer, I went for the second year to the week in Wurtsboro, at Camp Lakota. Like many camps, they have boating, swimming, volleyball, rock-climbing, pow wow swing, and other fun activities. Unlike other camps, however, there are many religious sisters, friars, and priests playing beside you and praying with you. Daily Mass and adoration might not sound like a typical camp activity, but when you combine it with joyful, enthusiastic people and great music, you are transported, and there’s nothing like it!
Samantha Webster, a junior at Burke Catholic High School, writes:
From the emotional adorations to playing laser tag, I thought Camp Veritas was a blast! I had such an amaz-ing experience. I made a lot of new friends, and made a bunch of new memories along with that.

Two years ago, Catholic Charities Community Services of Orange and Sullivan revived the annual GOSHEN
CHRISTMAS HOUSE TOUR. In that short time, it’s grown in popularity, and has become a very
important fund-raiser: every dollar goes to the relief of those in need right in our community. This year’s tour is on Saturday, December 2. While we’ll have plenty of visitors, we do need a few more homeowners in
and near the village who might be willing to decorate their homes and open them to visitors. The reward is literally out of this world – with the added benefit of getting your decorating done early! If you’d like to learn more, or would consider participating, please contact Sheila Toohey at CCCSOS (294-5124, ext.
308; [email protected]).
St. John’s Rosary Makers are starting a new meeting schedule. Please join them on Wednesday,
October 11th at 3:30pm in the Parish Center 2nd Floor. They make rosaries for the poor missions all around the world and locally. Please call Mary Anne
Saviello for more information at 360-5180.

Throughout the day at camp, time is broken up between spending time with Christ and doing fun activities such as swimming in the pool, riding go-karts, hockey, kickball, and more. This was my second year at camp. I wish I had known about it sooner! If you go to Camp Veritas it will not only be the highlight of your sum-mer, but it will also be something you will never forget. I think personally, it is a perfect time and way to con-nect with Christ, and have fun while doing it. I guarantee you that Camp Veritas will have the best Masses, adorations, and testimonies you will ever experience, with fun dancing, upbeat music, and sitting with all your friends. As we say at Veritas: There is a God, and I’m not Him.
Samantha’s sister Valerie, an eighth grader at Sacred Heart School in Monroe, has this to say:
My experience at Camp Veritas was great! Every day we woke up, went to morning prayer, had breakfast, and then rosary. After that, the activities started, such as soccer, pow wow, volleyball, go-karts, etc. My fa-vorite activity they had was the pow wow. I also met a lot of new friends in my cabin, and from different cabins. After adoration, we had a testimony, and then we got free time. This was my favorite part of the day. Overall, I had a great experience at Camp Veritas.
Christina Zick, an SJS eight grader, writes:
Last year I went to camp at MSMC so I was curious about going to Camp Lakota. I did not know what to expect at an outdoor camp. Camp Lakota is much different than MSMC. The activities at Camp Lakota are more exciting but the food and housing at MSMC are definitely better. At Camp Lakota, sixteen people slept in bunk beds in a cabin. My favorite activities were kayaking, paddle boarding, and going on giant inflatable slide at the lake. Other fun activities were rock climbing, volleyball, ga-ga ball, dodgeball, tennis, laser tag, hockey, ultimate frisbee, low ropes course and a giant swing called the pow wow. There was an entertaining volleyball game of religious sisters against priests. The religious side of Camp Veritas was the same at both locations. Everyday we prayed the rosary, attended Mass, went to adoration, and listened to testimonies. The music was terrific at adoration and Mass. It was a special experience being surrounded by so many people who love to worship God and are very friendly.
One of our campers shares this very personal reflection:
Camp Veritas has in so many ways saved my soul. It displays the loving core of our faith and makes it invit-ing to many a stubborn sinner like myself. The testimonies were amazing, and Veritas really brings out the beauty of Mass, Confession, Rosary––everyday things that we often underestimate. I have to admit, when I went into camp this year, I wasn’t happy about who I was. I felt that nothing that I did was of importance to anyone and that I was too clumsy and stupid for anything that I did to matter. Honestly, I hated myself. But this all changed at Veritas. In confession, in Adoration, at Mass, I felt loved again. I am so blessed to have been able to go to Camp Veritas with all the amazing counselors and people who helped me along my path, and I want to give extra thanks to my parents for signing me up for camp in the first place. Camp Veritas is a real soul saver, and I recommend it to anyone who wants a fresh start and a stronger relationship with God.
Faithfully your priest, Fr. George Hafemann
