The Exchange: A Band in Progress

    by Nelson Nolan

The school music scene.Youmean a brass band accompaniedwith flutes and clarinets? No, Imean a rock ensemble of 6 with aunique fusion of sound called TheExchange.

Now why should you carewhen there is obviously bettermusic on the radio or the topmusic charts? Well for a few rea-sons. No matter how good a bandis they need a basis of support in

order to be successful and whatgreater place for support thanfrom friends. Every musician thatnow plays on the internationalradio waves started out smallwith the help of a small dedicatedaudience. The art of live music isalso something that we shouldlook for to witness our favouritemusicians actually play instru-ments and the local music scene isa great place for this. And why notgive them a chance? You can'tcount on being able to have nor-mal conversation with yourfavourite band, but you couldhave a great conversation withthe bassist who plays in a band atyour school.

So last week, I sat downwith The Exchanage, a band whoholds their origins within the verywalls of our school. You can evencatch them playing in the bandroom and you may even have aclass with one of these guys. Herethey are, Elliott Li (guitarist),

Eric Sutherland (rdummer),Harry Simmonds (keyboard),Maddey Hussey (singer), RyleyEddy (Guitarist) and Peter Mas-son (bass player) and they evenhave a proclaimed band mother(Erin Sobat) who looks after therest of the bands needs, whateverthey might be.

Despite all being from dif-ferent musical backgrounds, theycome together to produce a soundthey call a unique rock-pop. Andyes, their lead singer is a female(apparently this doesnt over-shadow the bands masculinity, however Maddey wasnt there atthis point). The band first startedout with keyboardist Harry andguitarist Elliott, both starting outwith humble jam sessions underthe title White on` Rice whichhas eventually led to the full 6member band it is today, despitehaving just started out togetherand differing in musical taste(hence the name The Exchange).

They already have a fewgigs lined up that will be impor-tant for the development of theirfan base and recognition. How-

ever, they do insist on not sellingout and maintaining that theband stays in line with the enjoy-ment of making music so we canassure they wont be the nextJonas Brothers, but perhapssomething along the lines of Ar-cade Fire.

Their first gig will be atthe talent show, the second at a

fashion show in Kingsway Malland the third at the Interact Ban-quet for Belize. (Look out for theirsong Space Monkeys). They maynot be stadium size sellouts, buteach of these gigs will surely pro-vide a large audience to sampletheir music, as they insist theyhavent been dropping mixtapesaround the school. Despite for themost part being in grade 12, theyhope to stay together for as longas possible although there is aprospect that they will be dis-persed around Canada next year. The other band members alsohave connections with otherbands in the local music scene, infact the bassist plays for The Ver-tigos. (Apparently there has notyet been a feud between the twobut it's easy to say that The Ex-change would have the upperhand, being a year older). Theyalso hope to be recording theirfirst EP during the summer. Thefuture looks bright for the band asit is filled with talented musiciansand they are creating an originalsound.

In a world where the music

industry in fuelled by corporategiants, who arguably make musicfor money, try something healthyand unique for the ears and trylistening to some of Sheps veryown music. There could even bethe possibility that they could beplaying their next gig at yourhouse, or on the radio waves.

Whether its a paid babysit-ting job, or a non-paid one

(you poor dear), whether itsa younger sibling or a youngerstudent, kids are hard to dealwith. They have more mood swings than a Hollywoodstarlet with a Starbucks addiction, and in all honesty, probably dont understand a word youre saying tothem. After gaining some experience the hard way, Imhere to deliver some tips to help you survive whateverit is you have gotten yourself into.Tip #1: Make conversation. I know that soundslike crazy talk, especially if the kids are really youngand still cant pronounce half of the consonants in thealphabet. But hey, if you can successfully decipherwhat theyre saying between the lisp and the murmur-ing, sometimes they have interesting things to say.Other times, unfortunately, they just want to tell you

how fast their pet hamster, Hammy, can run on its lit-tle hamster wheel. Its kind of a toss up, but believeme, they like to talk, and if they like talking to you, then they probably like you. If not, continue reading.Tip #2: Bribery. Im serious, it works everytime. Ive had personal success with stickers, but youcould also spring for little candies or other sorts oftreats (just be sure there arent any allergies first). Youbring those babies out and youve got the kids love andattention for at least a minute and a half.Tip #3: Meet the parents. If the kid is your sib-ling, disregard this tip, if not, carry on. Getting toknow the parents is seriously important if youre get-ting paid to take care of their child. You need to knowif theyre really uptight, or more free spirited. We allknow that one set of parents who didnt like their kidswatching T.V. (if those parents were your parents, Ifeel for you). Most parents will be kind of unsure let-ting someone take care of their wittle angel for thefirst time. Reassure them, and then shoo them out thedoor. Tip #4: Do a head count. If youre babysittingmultiple children, or if you have a job leading a troupeof screaming toddlers around at summer camp, thisones for you. If you start the day with ten, make sureyou dont end it with nine. Do a head count every few

minutes, or even better: have the kids pair up withsomeone so that theyre never alone. Losing a little oneis never a good time. Youll be stressed and pullingyour hair out by the time they come innocently wan-

dering out of the wrong bathroom.Tip #5: Make a fool of yourself. Set up gamesfor them, and dont be afraid to join in. Playing withchildren is one of the few times these days where peo-ple really let loose and get their hands dirty, dont missit. If you want to play tag, go for it, if you want to playdress up, more power to you. Youll have fun, the kidswill have fun, and everyone will go home happy.

Remember, these tips are just the bare essen-tials, and if all else fails, up your enthusiasm by 120%.The kids wont know whats going on, and will get ex-cited by default. Its a tried-and-true method to makethem think that theyre having fun. Hey, you knowwhat they say: fake it till you make it. All in all, whatshould be taken away from this is that kids reallyarent all that scary, theyre just people, like you andme, who will hopefully grow up to be surly, stressed, completely normal teenagers. So let them have funnow, while theyre young and nave, and, you know, why not join in too?

Amongst all these beautifulwomen sporting such elegance, twoin particular stood out for me (Iswear it wasnt all the glitter and theshine though!). Rose Byrne dressedher slender figure in a black Vivi-enne Westwood dress. The bold cre-ation elevated Byrne and she wore itso marvelously that an Oscar shouldhave been awarded for her courageonly, with all that glitter and shim-mer, the opposing structures of the

dress andthe bare back. However, what impressed me most was the to-getherness of the ensemble, fromhead to toe: the complex dress calledfor simplicity when dealing with thefinal touches, and Byrne showed ele-gance and style as she opted for asimple, straight haircut with bangs, black platform heels and a blackclutch.

But my personal tress, woman and fashiondoubtedly Meryl Streep. Nperformance in The Iron Lally strong thus her Oscarshe dressed to win.
