JOHN SMALESmale Consulting Group (SCG) Pty Ltd was established by John Smale in early 2013 building upon his strong professional networks and affiliations, his regulatory and compliance background and diverse work experience.

John is a former Senior Environmental Health Officer with Queensland Health and has worked in Public Health, Environmental & Safety advisory roles in Australia and internationally for various clients in both the public and private sector. He maintains a strong commitment to professional development and has completed various postgraduate qualifications in environmental protection, public health, climate change & workplace health and safety.

John developed a strong connection to Asia Pacific during his time working abroad and in 2014 he was selected as an

Australian delegate to the Emerging Pacific Leadership Dialogue (EPLD). The EPLD 2014 is a development initiative staged for mid-career high calibre men and women under the auspices of Commonwealth Study Conferences (Australia) Inc. in partnership with Commonwealth Study Conferences (New Zealand)

Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws require a person or a company conducting a business or undertaking (the PCBU) protect the health and safety of their workers and the public while at work.

Legionella

The detection of Legionella in water systems raises potentially serious risks to the health of people exposed. The development and implementation of a water quality risk management plan can protect a facilities water system and prevent potential failures, thereby saving significant time and cost while protecting patients, staff and visitors from the risk of Legionella.

In January 2017, the Public Health (Water Risk Management) Amendment Bill 2016 will legally require all aged care and hospital facilities in Queensland to:

» develop a water risk management plan

» ensure water risk management plans are complied with

» notify the chief executive of the Department of Health, within one business day, when it is confirmed that Legionella has been detected in water used by a prescribed facility

» submit periodic reports summarising the results of Legionella tests for a prescribed facility.
