International Roughness Index
A ride quality indices developed in the 80’s
Reproducible and stable with time General pavement condition
indicator that describes roughness that causes vehicle vibrations
Concerned with wavelengths between 4’ and 100’, so you should be too

Pre-Bid Profiling
If possible profile the project before you bid and analyze the results to know what’s possible
May be able to use your State’s Highway Performance Monitoring System to access the “current” condition of their roadway inventory, for additional information

Quality Control
QA vs. QC → Catch issues early!

March 22-24, 2016 | Nashville, TN | www.worldofasphalt.com
The 3P’s → PLAN
Coordinate with Project Staff Know where the items are that
will effect ride qualityWork with law enforcement in
urban settings to help keep the profiler moving
10
March 22-24, 2016 | Nashville, TN | www.worldofasphalt.com
The 3P’s → PREPARE
Sweep the job to remove debris
Move the traffic control Get the crews out of the wayMark out all of the important
things with reflective tapeDo a dry run
11
March 22-24, 2016 | Nashville, TN | www.worldofasphalt.com
The 3P’s → PROVE
Don’t assume because you passed DOT certification that everything is still in spec
Check/Verify all of the components every time before you profileAccelerometers → Verify or CalibrateHeight Sensors → Clean & VerifyDMI → Verify or Calibrate

Profiling
Make sure you give yourself enough room Be up to speed before the run starts,
maintain a constant speed throughout testing and don’t deaccelerate until after the data collection has been stopped
Make sure you locate all of the taped locations
13
March 22-24, 2016 | Nashville, TN | www.worldofasphalt.com
Profiling
Replicate runs are ESSENTIAL, so profile again! Like with any testing, care, accuracy and
precision is critical
14
March 22-24, 2016 | Nashville, TN | www.worldofasphalt.com
Analyze
Check the data that you’ve just collected before leaving the project
This step, if completed, will save time and most certainly money

Analyze
Software Compare replicate runs
Look at the shape of curves Look for repeatability
between runs Look for excessive noise
19
March 22-24, 2016 | Nashville, TN | www.worldofasphalt.com
Analyze
Look to make sure events are captured correctly
20
Are these locations where they’re supposed to be?
March 22-24, 2016 | Nashville, TN | www.worldofasphalt.com
Mark Out
Marking out the localized roughness/bumps with the profiler is a great way to identify issues with your operation or issues out of your control
Spray paint or stake start and end points of the roughness on the shoulder of the roadway for future reference
21
March 22-24, 2016 | Nashville, TN | www.worldofasphalt.com
Mark Out
Ride the pavement once its marked and see if you can feel the identified roughness
22
March 22-24, 2016 | Nashville, TN | www.worldofasphalt.com
Things that can effect data
Debris on the Road Changing Speed Wind Hills & Curves Short Lead-In or Lead-Out
Distances Textures Excess Moisture
23
March 22-24, 2016 | Nashville, TN | www.worldofasphalt.com
Examples – Debris
Debris on the Road
24
March 22-24, 2016 | Nashville, TN | www.worldofasphalt.com
Examples – Changing Speed
Rapidly changing speed during a run will affect the accelerometers and contaminate the data
25
Ax = Longitudinal Acceleration
θ = Pitch angleAccelerometer axis
g = acceleration due to gravity
Az = Vertical Acceleration
Ameas
March 22-24, 2016 | Nashville, TN | www.worldofasphalt.com
Examples – Changing Speed
Accelerating too quickly
26
March 22-24, 2016 | Nashville, TN | www.worldofasphalt.com
Examples – Changing Speed
Heavy braking
27
March 22-24, 2016 | Nashville, TN | www.worldofasphalt.com
Examples – Wind
Similar to the effect caused by changing speeds, the accelerometer may record acceleration along the y-axis thus increasing roughness in your profile runs
How do you avoid this “noise”? Don’t profile when it’s windy out, because you can’t control it
28
March 22-24, 2016 | Nashville, TN | www.worldofasphalt.com
Examples – Hills & Curves
Like wind you cannot avoid it Need to maintain a consistent speed that
minimizes the effects to the profiler when cornering or ascending or descending hills
Make replicate runs at different speeds and watch for differences in the profiler’s output that may indicate effects of curves or hills
29
March 22-24, 2016 | Nashville, TN | www.worldofasphalt.com
Examples – Short Lead-In
Not enough room to get the profiler up to speed
Same will be true for stopping too soon at the end of the run
30
March 22-24, 2016 | Nashville, TN | www.worldofasphalt.com
Examples – Texture
Textured pavements like SMA, OGFC/PFC or other large stone mixes can affect IRI although the ride is not affected

Advanced Analysis
ProVAL – Profile viewing and analyzing software product
It’s a great tool and best of all, it’s free!

March 22-24, 2016 | Nashville, TN | www.worldofasphalt.com
Advanced Analysis - PCM
PCM – Profiler Certification Module A great way to compare runs statistically Requires 3 or more replicate runs in order to use

March 22-24, 2016 | Nashville, TN | www.worldofasphalt.com
Advanced Analysis - PSD
PSD – Power Spectral Density Module Simply stated; it tells you if there’s something
effecting your profiles

March 22-24, 2016 | Nashville, TN | www.worldofasphalt.com
Advanced Analysis - PSD
If underlying pavements have an effect on the overlay ride quality, PSD will show you that and potentially reduce your risk

Summary
Smooth pavements aren’t achieved by accident
You need to perform quality testing early and often
Only you can control the quality of data that is collected
Use the tools available to review your data
