John Newman is in his 23rd season coaching both the University of the Incarnate Word men’s and women’s tennis programs. He has guided the Cardinals through a number of transitions in his career taking the program from NAIA and the Heart of Texas Conference to NCAA Division II and the Heartland Conference and Lone Star Conference and in 2013-14 to NCAA Division I and the Southland Conference.

Newman has 26 years of experience as a collegiate women’s tennis head coach and 32 years as a collegiate men’s tennis head coach. During that time he has compiled a 591-418-2 record.

Newman is the longest tenured head coach at Incarnate Word and has built up an impressive resume. He has won 20 conference championships, earned nine berths to the national tournament, won 11 Coach of the Year awards and has had his teams ranked nationally 27 times at the conclusion of the season.

Over the past two seasons, Newman has had both the men’s and women’s teams just miss out on regional competition despite being ranked highly in the nation at the Division

II level. The men were ranked #23 in 2012-13 and #19 in 2011-12, but missed out both years. The women were ranked #32 each of the past two years and were unable to receive a berth to postseason play.

In 2008, Newman led the women to the regional title and advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championships for the first time. The men earned their first ever berth into the NCAA Division II National Championships when they won a regional title in 2002. He has led the men to six NCAA Division II Regional appearances while the women made five appearances and just missed winning the regional 2004 when they came up a point short.

Newman has led the men’s team to Heartland Conference titles in 2002 and 2008 while the women earned six titles in 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010.

In 2002, Newman was a double winner as the ITA men’s and women’s regional coach of the year. He was the Heartland Conference Women’s Coach of the Year five times in 2001, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010 and he won the men’s award in 2008.

Prior to joining the NCAA, Newman dominated the NAIA Heart of Texas Conference. He won five consecutive men’s titles from 1993-97 and seven consecutive women’s titles from 1992-98. He was the Heart of Texas Men’s Coach of the Year in 1993 and 1995 and the Women’s Coach of the Year in 1992. He was honored as the NAIA District Men’s Coach of the Year in both 1993 and 1994. During his time with the Heart of Texas Conference the women never lost a conference match and the men only lost six matches.

In addition to team success, Newman has numerous players earn individual

honors. His top protégée was Jonas Andersson who was the NAIA National Singles and Doubles Champion in 1993. Andersson teamed with Javier Ruiz for the doubles title. He has coached a total of 16 All-Americans, 10 on the men’s side and six on the women’s side. His latest All-American was Henry Estrella who earned ITA First Team All-America honors in 2008 and was the Heartland Conference Player of the Year in 2007 and 2008.

A native San Antonian, and a graduate of Jefferson High School, Newman and his then partner James Moses reached the number five junior ranking by the US Lawn Tennis Association. In college, he was on the first of the great men’s teams at Trinity University in San Antonio. He played four years there and earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education.

His playing career has included stints on both the United States and European circuits. In his home state, he has won four Texas Open titles, one in singles and three in doubles with his brother Butch, the former Trinity coach. Newman also has won a singles title in the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation. He has played in three US Open Championships.

He is a stalwart in the Texas Sectionals. Beginning with the 35 age group, Newman has won every state tournament he has entered. In 1997 he captured his first Super Seniors title by defeating the number two player in the entire world for 60 and over. In the summer of 2003, he led the Texas team to a title at the National Intersectional Championships. He has been ranked as Texas’ number one player in both singles and doubles for the 65 and over category.

His coaching career began right at home as the men’s assistant and women’s head coach for 12 years at Trinity. He then spent four years as

the men’s coach at the University of Tennessee and six years at Vanderbilt University as the men’s coach where he started the program. In 1990 he returned home to serve as the associate coach here at Incarnate Word before moving to the head job in 1991.

The collegiate titles under Newman’s leadership are monumental. At Trinity, he assisted on an NCAA national team title and was the head coach of a pair of USTA Collegiate Championship women’s teams. JoAnne Russell, a player under him at Trinity, was the Wimbledon doubles champion in 1977. At Tennessee his 1980 team won the Southeast Conference, a men’s doubles team won the NCAA championship, and he was SEC coach of the year.

Newman has been inducted into the UIW Hall of Fame and is the only three-time Trinity University Hall of Famer as a player, women’s coach and men’s coach.

Brad Martin joined the University of the Incarnate Word golf program in 2010-11 as an assistant coach, but quickly became the interim head coach and finally, the head coach at the start of 2011-12.

Martin has put his stamp on both the men’s and women’s programs in a short time. The men finished in sixth place in the Lone Star Conference in both 2012 and 2013. The 2012-13 squad also qualified for the NCAA Division II South Central/West Region Championships in DuPont, WA. He earned his first tournament victory in September of 2012 when the men won The Territory Classic hosted by Cameron University.

Martin has also had success working with the women’s team at UIW. The team won the UIW Fall Classic in each of his first two seasons. They took seventh in the LSC in 2012 and fifth in 2013. In each of those seasons he had an

individual qualify for the Regional Championships.

Martin, who graduated from MacArthur High School here in San Antonio, had worked in the area for several years and was a coach and a teacher for approximately 13 years.

His undergraduate degree was earned at New Mexico State University, where he earned his marketing degree via the school’s Professional Golf Management program.

He has worked at various clubs and courses around the area, including Northern Hills Country Club, La Cantera Golf Academy and Rolling Oaks Golf Center, where he currently teaches private lessons when not taking care of his UIW duties.

Martin began his collegiate coaching career at St. Mary’s

University as an assistant coach. He was there for two seasons when he met then UIW coach Doug Quiere. When Quiere informed Martin of the Cardinals’ need for an assistant coach, Martin took it, feeling UIW was a better opportunity. Then, Quierre – whose previous work experience was primarily with the military – took a position with the armed forces and Martin inherited the program.

Now, Martin is charged with leading the Cardinals into the realm of NCAA Division I and the Southland Conference. It is a transition period, but one in which Martin thinks the teams can still be successful.

Martin has a wife, Terri, and one daughter, Amy.

Southland Conference Mileage Chart

THE CONFERENCE In an era of considerable change in intercolle-giate athletics, the Southland Conference continues to be a model of innovation, stability and consistent achievement as it celebrates a half-century of the academic and athletic accomplishments of its mem-ber institutions. Commemorating its 50th anniversary in 2013, the Southland Conference has transformed itself into a dynamic and respected consortium of 14 member universities in four states. Beginning with a historic meeting of five institutions in Dallas on March 15, 1963, the Southland Conference set on an extraordi-nary course that has proven successful well into its five decades of existence. The successful transformation continues, as the Southland Conference welcomed the addition of Oral Roberts University in 2012-13, marking the league’s first entry into the state of Oklahoma. Also, on July 1, 2013, the Southland welcomed four additional members: Abilene Christian University, Houston Baptist University, the University of Incar-nate Word in San Antonio, and the University of New Orleans. In addition to its newest members, the South-land Conference also consists of the University of Central Arkansas, Lamar University, McNeese State University, Nicholls State University, Northwestern State University, Sam Houston State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Stephen F. Austin State University and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. An original Southland member, Abilene Chris-tian rejoins the league as one of the most decorated athletic programs in NCAA history, and the addition of Houston Baptist, Incarnate Word and New Orleans gives the Southland a regular competitive presence in the key metropolitan areas of Houston, San Anto-nio and New Orleans. Southland cities encompass approximately 14.5 million people, and seven of its television markets rank among the top 100 in the U.S. All told, the membership of the Southland encompasses nearly 140,000 current students and an alumni base of nearly 800,000. Famous alums from current Southland Conference schools include former CBS news anchor Dan Rather (Sam Houston State), NBA executive Joe Dumars (McNeese State), ABC news anchor Robin Roberts (Southeastern Louisiana), Major League Baseball star Wade Miley (Southeastern Louisiana), NBA legend Scottie Pippen (Central Arkansas), and track and field Olympians Kenta Bell (Northwestern State), and Bobby Morrow and Billy Olson (both Abilene Christian). Other notable alums from current members include Grammy Award-winning musicians Frank Ocean (New Orleans), Don Henley and Rodney Crowell (both Stephen F. Austin), and Ronnie Dunn (Abilene Christian), television personality and actress Ellen DeGeneres (New Orleans), current NFL standouts Lardarius Webb (Nicholls State), Terrence McGee (Northwestern State), and Daniel Manning (Abilene Christian), professional golfers Shawn Stefani and Chris Stroud (both Lamar) and Colin Montgomerie (HBU), award-winning filmmaker Richard Linklater (Sam Houston State), American Idol winner Kris Allen (Central Arkansas), NFL Hall of Famer Jackie Harris (Northwestern State), former NFL standouts Bobby Hebert (Northwestern State), Gary Barbaro (Nicholls State), Wilbert Montgomery (Abilene Christian) and Gary Reasons (Northwestern State), former MLB stars Darryl Hamilton (Nicholls State) and Kevin Millar (Lamar), NCAA football coach Charlie Strong (Central Arkansas), TV personality

Kathie Lee Gifford (Oral Roberts), actors John Larro-quette (New Orleans), and Ricardo Chavira and Jesse Borrego (both UIW) and NFL coaching legend O.A. “Bum” Phillips (Lamar and Stephen F. Austin). The Southland sponsors 17 championship sports, all at the NCAA Division I level. The eight men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field. The women compete for nine championships in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball. The conference earns automatic qualification to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball. Continuing its tradition of innovation, the league launched the Southland Conference Televi-sion Network in the fall of 2008 and has broadcast more than 160 events. The network has expanded its reach to roughly 13 million households through-out Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma in recent years, and has also gained national viewer-ship through ESPN3 and Fox College Sports. In its first five years, the network has received recognition for its work, earning numerous College Sports Media and Telly Awards.
