“I actually paint almost everything that is in sight...clothing, headpieces, I make a lot of bright colored work, and I do this because it is an attempt to paint myself out of the darkness.”

“There wasn’t much scholarship money but we managed to get it...It saved my life...it did, it really did,” said Erin Fromkes of West Palm Beach. Erin has been coming to the Armory for about five years.

Getting out is difficult for Erin, but she says it is worth it. She likes the painting, the community, the escape, the fun. Erin contracted tick-born diseases when she was about 14 years old and has been chronically ill ever since. “I have been dealing with these illnesses and they pretty much steal your life away, your life-force, your essence, so it makes it very difficult to get through the day.”

Erin has benefited from studying with Miroslav Antić. She said “He just tells it like it is. He is teaching how not to be afraid of change, that it is not about perfection, it is about movement, it is about expression. I was probably stuck in my way of doing something a certain way, trying to reproduce something exactly the way it was. It doesn’t need to be that way.”

Making art has other benefits for Erin. “When I am doing my artwork it takes me to a different space completely. I kind of lose myself. I forget about the illness. It is really one of the only times when I am able to do that.”

Incorporating her pills, pill powders, and medical paper into the art pieces, Erin makes awareness art. Unceasingly creative, when she is too ill to get up, she creates digital work in bed on her ipad.

Erin was the first-place winner of the Armory’s most recent Fashion ARTillery and she also won the Rubino award. The awards are allowing her to continue studies at the Armory.

“The couple of scholarships I did get got me out of the house and got me here [the Armory]. They got me creating, meeting other artists, and I honestly think that if it wasn’t for the scholarships I probably wouldn’t be where I am right now.”

To make a special contribution to the adult scholarship fund, call the registrar at (561) 832-1776.

S C H O O L P O L I C I E SThe Armory Art Center is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. The following policies and measures are in place so we can continue to pursue our mission: “to provide high-quality visual art education and art gallery services that stimulate personal self-discovery and generate knowledge and awareness of art as part of life.” Tuition fees cover only 60% of the art school’s operating costs. The other 40% is raised through grants, fundraisers, and donations, thereby subsidizing student tuition. When registering for any class at the Armory Art Center, students acknowledge the understanding of and agree to the policies listed below.

LIABILITYThe Armory will not assume liability for injuries that occur within the subject area where the student is enrolled. Upon registration for any course, the student assumes all reasonable liability from injuries related to the scope of the coursework being taught and releases the Armory Art Center from any liability claims related to any injuries and/or accidents that may occur. The student can be assured that every reasonable safety precaution is taken by the center. The Armory Art Center is not responsible for any artwork or personal items lost or stolen in the classrooms or lockers.

REFUNDSA non-refundable registration fee equal to 10% of the course tuition is included in each course registration, excluding one day workshops and Pop-up Workshops. Students who with-draw from a course at least five (5) working days prior to the start of that course are eligible to receive a full tuition refund minus the registration fee. Students who withdraw from their course less than five (5) working days before the start of that course or once the course has started are not eligible for a refund. No refunds will be issued due to a student’s failure to attend class.

CANCELLED OR MISSED COURSESThere are no make-up classes due to student illness, travel, or other reasons that are not the responsibility of the Armory Art Center. Students enrolled in courses which are cancelled by the Armory due to lack of enrollment or instructor illness will receive a full refund. Every effort will be made to notify students at least 24 hours before the first class. The Armory reserves the right to substitute instructors for any of its classes at any time.

TRANSFERS AND PRORATINGStudents wishing to transfer from one course to another in the same session may do so prior to the second meeting of the course and only if space is available. Individual classes paid for but not attended are “missed” classes and are not eligible for transfer or refund. Prorating is available at the discretion of each course and certain restrictions apply. Please inquire at the registrar before registration in any course.

DISCOUNTSPalm Beach County teachers receive a 25% discount on classes with proof of school ID. Youth (ages 14 - 18) receive a 25% discount on tuition for adult classes.

Multiple Course Discount: A multiple course discount cannot be combined with any other discount. This discount only applies to 4 and 8 week classes. This discount does not apply when classes are pro-rated.

• Adult Students will receive a 20% discount on the tuition of additional courses (of equal or lesser value, exclusive of studio time, lab fees, model fees, or cost of materials purchased at the Armory) in the same session for the same student.

• Parents of Summer Art Camp students receive 10% off adult classes during Sessions 5/6 only.

• South Florida Basket and Fiber Arts Guild members get 20% off classes. Not applicable for Pop-up Workshops.

Please see posted hours in each department area.
