The Eastwest European Institute (EWEI) is an independent organization specializedin geopolitical research and analysis, organization of scientific events and trainingprojects for students and professionals, with a focus on international affairs andglobal dynamics.   Our Scientific Committee provides guidelines for the activities ofthe Eastwest European Institute, through bi-monthly meetings.  It is composed byleaders in the international political, economic and cultural world, such as: RomanoProdi, Joschka Fischer, Enrico Letta, Emma Bonino, and Javier Solana.   EWEI also produces and distributes the geopolitical magazine “eastwest”, since2004 (www.eastwest.eu).

OUR HISTORY

WHO WE ARE

Associazione Diplomatici is an NGO with special consultative status with the UnitedNations Economic and Social Council. From 2000 to-date, it has prepared +30.000students from all over the world on current issues and international careers whothen took part in international forums organized by AD at the United Nations or inother institutional scenarios in Italy and abroad.The aim of Associazione Diplomatici is to let young people to focus themselves indefense of the values of democracy studying and simulating the works of the greatinternational organizations, understanding the meaning of respect, tolerance andcoexistence between citizens of the world of different culture, faith or ethnicity.Additionally, training themselves in side skills for the world of global work.

WHO WE ARE

The Online Model EU is a fully remote role-playing simulation of European politicswhich provides its participants with an in-depth understanding of the mechanismsof the European Parliament’s role and functioning. It is organised by the Eastwest European Institute (EWEI) with the support of theAssociazioni Diplomatici, two Italian organisations specialised in learning-by-doingtrainings in the field of international politics.

A Model  European Union  (Model EU)is a simulation of the functioning ofthe main institutions of the EuropeanUnion, in this case the  EuropeanParliament. Students role-play one ofthe  members of the  EuropeanParliament  in his/her political groupsand the plenary, debating on themost pressing global issues andworking to draft and vote commonlegislative and non-legislative acts.

The Online Model EU will allow itsparticipants to benefit fully from theexperience of a Model EuropeanUnion exercise through moderntechnology and without leaving theirhomes. From training to thesimulation itself, online tools andplatforms will allow for anencompassing experience, fulfillinginteractions between participants anda newly acquired understanding ofEuropean politics.

The Model EU Online Edition is a unique training experience. Without leaving your home, you can acquire new skills, better understandEuropean politics and meet new people.

The theme of the Online Model EU 2020 will be based on real works and debatesheld recently in the European parliament on the topic of the current worldpandemic. The highly topical theme will be able to develop an up to dateunderstanding of the internal dynamics at the European Parliament on the issueand of the current challenges the European Union is facing in the field.

THE THEME

The goal of the Model EU Virtual Edition is to give you the opportunity toreplicate, from your home, the official works of the European Union, representingone of the 705 members of the European Parliament according to the standardoperating procedures of the Model EU that will be presented to you during thetraining course. You will be assigned a political group to represent as well as acountry of origin. The political groups to be represented are: the group of the European People’sParty group, the group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats,Renew European Group, the group of the Greens/European Free Alliance, theIdentity and Democracy Group, the European Conservatives and ReformistsGroup and the Confederal Group of the European United Left – Nordic Green Left.Your goal will be to cooperate with other representatives to find a commonposition on the issue at stake. You will have to negotiate as a real member of parliament to get consensus bothwithin your groups and among groups, and get your project of legislative or non-legislative act approved. Remote activities are guaranteed by the joint use ofFacebook® groups and Zoom®, two powerful tools that let you experience a funand highly interactive virtual experience.

The opening and closing ceremonies, as well as the plenaries of Model EU Onlinewill take place on Zoom. The platform guarantees exceptional clarity and qualityand ensures that everyone can participate equally whether with your computersor smartphones. The working sessions for political groups will take place both on Zoom andFacebook. Closed, private Facebook groups dedicated to the event will be createdand moderated by EWEI. Please note that the work schedules indicated in theagenda refers to CET – Central European Time zone.

THE TOOLS

All participants in the Model EU Virtual Edition, besides theirpolitical group/country of origin assignment, will be assigned to ateam of 30 students with whom they will participate in ajournalistic challenge. The winning team will get an awardallowing its members to further develop their understanding ofinternational affairs.

Special guests will take part to the opening and closingceremonies of the event. Participants will be welcomed to thesimulation by a special address from President David Sassoli(incumbent President of the European parliament). Enrico Letta,former Italian Prime Minister and Dean of the School ofInternational Affairs (PSIA) of Sciences Po Paris, will in turnaddress participants during the closing ceremony of the event.

TEAM CHALLENGES

Each member of the winning team of the team challenge isreward with a voucher worth 250€. Vouchers can be spent forparticipation in the World in Progress study trips organised byEWEI, such as WiP Istanbul (June 2021), WiP Moscow(September 2021), WiP Brussels (December 2020), WiP Qatar(November- December 2020) and WiP Tunisi (February 2021).Vouchers can also be spent to take part in the EconomicDiplomacy and Economic Diplomacy II projects. The most activemembers of the winning team will in addition receive a specialaward.

In order to become a real e-MEP (e-Member of the European Parliament), you willbe able to follow our online course, held in English. The course offers a generaloverview of the role and structure of the European Union and provides theknowledge and skills needed to successfully join this experience. The training is alsoenriched  by contributions from politics, law and economics, diplomats andjournalists experts.

Getting ready is simple and useful by accessing our E-LearningPlatform available via computer or smartphone. You will findvideos, in-depth documents and tutorials sorted by themesrelevant to the simulation. You will soon become an expert andwill be ready to join the simulation successfully using the best ofyour technology skills.

You will attend our real-time virtual classes led by our tutors byjoining your virtual classrooms. The entire course of the Model EUVirtual Edition will facilitate your preparation by offering you astrong insight of what you will mostly need to know such as publicspeaking, the writing skills.

HOW TO GET PREPARED: E-MEP COURSE

The Model EU Virtual Edition is open to university level students as well as youngprofessionals. No language certification is requested when registering to Model EU, but it isgood to keep in mind that the entire Model EU activity is held in English. It istherefore necessary to have written and oral interaction skills.

HOW TO REGISTER

The objective of our project is to involve prepared and motivated students whowant to join the debate on the relaunch of the European project. For this reasonthe selection process for participants goes through a special procedure and onlythose considered eligible will be invited to take part to the simulation.

The Model EU Online is completely free for students enrolled in the Model EU2020, Brussels edition. If you choose to participate in one of the upcoming,onsite Model EU (Model EU Brussels, from 05 to 07 October 2020 and Model EUStrasbourg, from 25 to 27 January 2021), the amount paid for the Model EUOnline is automatically deducted from the registration fee.

Economic Diplomacy will take its participants to the heartof US and international institutions both in New York andin Washington. Through dynamic simulation at the seatsof first-plan international entreprises, students willdevelop their understanding of international affairs andeconomic diplomacy.

June -July 2021

Based in Geneva, Economic Diplomacy II will provideits participants with a new insight into the dynamics ofinternational policies. Simulations of internationalnegotiations will take place at the seats of first-planinternational entreprises, and participants will developan in-depth understanding of international affairsthrough the course.

Participants to the  WiP  Qatar develop  a thoroughknowledge of the Qatar’s most recent history, tounderstand its skyrocketing economic developmentover the last few decades. The  WiP  also touchesupon  controversial topics:  economic crisis andsanctions, terrorism, financial crisis.  It constitutes aunique opportunity to better understand the countryand the most recent geopolitical events in the region.

The WiP Istanbul will take the participants to the coreof Turkish life, culture and politics. Participants willmeet first-rank politicians and  high level  universityexperts. They will deepen their understanding of thecountry’s current challenges and of the dynamics ofinternational relations in the region.

WIP ISTANBUL

During their stay in Tunisia, participants will meet andlearn from politicians from the highest level, civil societyactivists and practitioners of international institutionsworking for the democratic transition of the country. The geopolitics of the region, its history and currentchallenges will be spelled out and debated upon.
