Please enjoy reading about our first investment in the BCHS Lab, the incredible benefits of the new Critical Care Beds (that we continue to raise funds to replace), and meeting our new Board Chair, Marilyn Sewell. Be sure to check out our website at www.bchsysfoundation.org to find out more about the exciting things happening every day at our organization, thanks to your support. Together, we are transforming healthcare in our community!

With much gratitude,

One of the best parts of my day is when we are able to connect donors with the impact of their giving. I want to share with you that there is always incredible gratitude felt by medical professionals, patients and families, and everyone involved, when we unveil a new piece of state-of-the-art equipment or an innovative medical resource. It is truly motivating and heart-warming to see how donor dollars are directly making a patient’s experience better at the BCHS. I hope you feel great pride in how you are helping to make these purchases possible. Every dollar counts and we value and appreciate your choice in making the Brant Community Healthcare System Foundation your charity. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Message from Sherri Bocchini President & CEO of the Brant Community Healthcare System Foundation

As the new Chair of the Brant Community Healthcare System (BCHS) Foundation Board of Directors, Marilyn Sewell is committed to furthering our mission, using her experience and community connections to spread awareness about the need to give.

Marilyn has been a member of our Board of Directors since 2010, and her tenure has helped her develop a vision for what she would like to accomplish as Board Chair.

“I want to be out in the community and sharing our story any way I can,” she said.

Marilyn wants community giving to be a personal and positive response to a demonstrated need for support at the BCHS. She’s making it her promise to engage the community and spread the important message to every citizen that giving what they can is valued and means everything to our organization.

Thanks to our wonderful donors, the BCHS Foundation was able to recently invest in important equipment and resources to support patient-centred care at The Willett, Paris.

Urinalysis Interface SolutionUrinalysis is the physical, chemical, and microscopic examination of urine. It involves a number of tests to detect and measure various compounds that pass through the urine. With donor dollars, the BCHS Foundation was able to invest $10,000 to support the implementation of an interfaced solution to standardize the processing and results for both glucose meter and urine testing at The Willett, Paris.

Investments at The Willett, Paris

Vital Signs Monitor $4,500 eachVital signs monitors electronically monitor and measure the various physiological statistics of our patients, including heart rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure, simultaneously. They can also be used to perform medical testing, such as checking blood glucose levels. These features allow for continuous monitoring of a patient and provide accurate data for medical professionals to support diagnosis and treatments for patients.

Critical Care BedsThe BCHS Foundation is proud to support our Critical Care Unit (CCU), located on Level 5 of D Wing. The CCU provides a holistic (body, mind and spirit) approach to care while utilizing specialized state-of-the-art technology for patients with life-threatening single or multi-system organ failure and close monitoring of patients at high risk of developing critical illness.

The CCU has identified the urgent need for 15 new Critical Care Beds to support patient-centred care. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we were able to swing into action immediately and have purchased 3 new beds ($35,000 each) that will be in the unit by next month. Our goal is to replace all needed beds in the near future.

The Critical Care Beds purchased with donor dollars are so much more than just a bed.

•With a touch, staff can document patient treatments electronically, create reminders and monitor several beds at once.

•This specialized bed helps to reduce physical stress and back injuries for caregivers, while promoting the most versatile and effective positioning for patients.

•The innovative mattress support surface maximizes pressure redistribution through its unique air pod technology. The four zone sensor technology automatically adjusts pod pressure while taking into account the patient’s weight range, position and frame articulation changes. It helps to maintain skin integrity as it delivers low-air-loss directly to the patients’ most vulnerable areas.

Meet Marilyn Sewell…

“I am completely in awe of the creative and amazing ways that individuals and groups raise money to support the BCHS Foundation,” Marilyn said. “From lemonade stands to workplace events such as bbq’s or silent auctions, people in our community are showing they care.”

Her involvement in a variety of other organizations over the years has helped her gain valuable experience that she brings to our Board. Marilyn’s volunteer involvement includes prior leadership in her church, 4-H, and other community organizations. Her career with the Ontario Public Service (with the agricultural and rural sectors) also focuses on policy development, organizational effectiveness and relationship management.

Marilyn lives near Paris where she is married, and a proud mother of three. When she is not cheering on her children or supporting their activities, she enjoys her book club, movies, and staying in touch with friends.

• It offers complete side rail coverage ensuring there are no hazardous gaps and vertical coverage to help reduce risk of falls.

• It monitors all patient movements and notifies medical professionals of subtle movement to exiting the bed.

•They even play music! Evidence has shown that soothing sound therapy can help mask sounds of the CCU, promoting rest and relaxation as well as providing beneficial physiological effects such as reduction in blood pressure and reduced requirements for pain medication and sedation.

•This technology will speak 36 languages to help bridge the translation gap at the point of care with simple commands and questions.

“The new stainer will help us make a faster and more precise diagnosis,” she said.

The current unit has limited capacity and requires a full day to process one set of 48 patient test slides – without being able to add or remove slides during that time.

The new instrument will be equipped with continuous flow and access features that enable slides to be added .

New reagents and methodologies will also support the improved turn around times and quality of results.

“We’re excited to be getting an instrument that has the capability to do more, quicker,” said Brian Donohue, a Medical Laboratory Technologist at BCHS.

Dr. Ann Hall, a Pathologist at BCHS, was among those in the Lab who were asked to help select the new equipment. She said quality is the priority and is thrilled with the results the new equipment will provide to the team.

Members of the acquisition team have visited other organizations to see the technology at work and are excited at the opportunity to bring this type of system to the BCHS.

Don Manning , Value Stream Leader responsible for the Pathology Department, stated the department is thrilled and grateful that through the generosity of BCHS Foundation donors, we’re able to make this initiative a reality.

Manning said the Laboratory is like the “silent partner of the healthcare team,” with few people realizing the role the department plays in supporting patient care by providing physicians timely information to aid in diagnosis and treatment options. Being better equipped behind the scenes in the Lab helps the health care team involved gain a clearer picture of the scope of a patient’s health concerns and provide appropriate options for care.

hanks to donor dollars, specialized lab equipment providing improved patient safety features, high quality results and faster turn around times of tissue testing has been made possible!

The Brant Community Healthcare System (BCHS) Foundation is proud to announce its first investment in the BCHS Laboratory Department through the purchase of a new barcode labelling, tracking and Immunohistochemical (IHC) stainer.

“The process in place right now for patient/specimen identification checks is excellent, but very manual. The patient safety features of the new system will provide a higher level of confidence while removing the unnecessary duplication in the current process,” says Marla Silverthorn, Team Leader.

Enhanced patient safety and workflow efficiencies will also be recognized with the new IHC stainer.

Pathologist and Medical Director of the Lab, Dr. Katherine Chorneyko, said the IHC stainer is a valuable tool used by Pathologists regularly, often for cancer diagnosis.

This commitment of approximately $300,000 will allow pathology staff to process tissue samples using barcode technology that will be applied to all patient specimens, requisitions and lab stainer reagents. This will replace the current practice of repetitive hand-writing of numbers and specimen information through the entire processing cycle. It will also provide an audit trail to locate specimens in real-time at any stage of the lab process, improving and streamlining laboratory productivity.
