Sustainable Developmentisvery hot (even be abused word in China now. Lot ofpeople are familiar with the word and use it in different means and different ways.

THE UNDERSTANDING OF SDS

Most people know a little about word ofDFS(design for sustainability), but think it same with green design. Those who know aboutSDSare relatively less, even in the scope of designers. Focusing on the materialproduct designis still in dominant in China. 4. In Tsinghua we haveSystem Design Studiofrom 1998 the vision seems coincides with concept ofDFS .

THE UNDERSTANDING OF SDS

We thinksystem designshould not aim at object, but event, not product but solution, by means ofprocessing relations of internal and external elements! It should be creating a new lifestyle for people, searching for a all-win situation for people, society, environment and enterprises, the final purpose is contributing to sustainable development of society. 5. thedesign of suchsystems of products and services which would be jointly capable of satisfying specific needs and desires of the customer, and the related innovative stakeholders interactions, leading towards eco-efficiency, social equity and cohesion. (Carlo)

THE UNDERSTANDING OF SDS

6.

THE UNDERSTANDING OF SDS

The concept of harmony between human and naturewas firstly described by Zhuang Zi living more than 2000 years before (about 369 B.C. - 286 B.C.), subsequently developed by other philosophers to a set of philosophy system, and thus constructed themain body of traditional Chinese culture. SUSTAINABLE CONCEPTS IN ANCIENT CHINA: 7.

THE UNDERSTANDING OF SDS

Sustainable concept in ancient China is a systematic idea taking the ecological environment as the central, and the harmonious development of mankind and nature as the vision based on this thinking could really contribute to humanitys well-being and long-term development. 8.

BASIC INFORMATION OF CHINA : ACHIEVEMENTS AND PROBLEMS

China has experienced reform and opening-up for nearly 30 years, and accessed the achievement attracting all worlds attention. Economy developed rapidly, living level of people raised...Per capita GDP of China in 80s of last century is200$ and that value in 2008 reached 3000$.China not only feeds 1.3 billion population with limited resources, but also creates amiracle of economic development. 9.

BASIC INFORMATION OF CHINA : ACHIEVEMENTS AND PROBLEMS

While economy developing rapidly, China also faces huge issues: 1,Over-exploitation of resourcesandincreasingly serious environmental problems have been the huge burdens influencing future China development. 10.

BASIC INFORMATION OF CHINA : ACHIEVEMENTS AND PROBLEMS

70 11.

BASIC INFORMATION OF CHINA : ACHIEVEMENTS AND PROBLEMS

2,With Intensified the process of urbanization, large numbers of rural population flooding into big cities has challenged city management seriously excessive density of population, serious traffic jam, widening rich-poor gap, pollution as well as low quality air and so on. 5km/h not fast than carriage 12.

BASIC INFORMATION OF CHINA : ACHIEVEMENTS AND PROBLEMS

3, aging problems aggravate, and China would lose its labor advantages gradually. 4, laws and regulations which are not suitable to economic development needed to complete and improve. 13.

BASIC INFORMATION OF CHINA : ACHIEVEMENTS AND PROBLEMS

Under this background,SDSconcepts and practice means much to the transition towards a sustainable society in china. 14.

SDS STATE-OF-THE-ART IN CHINA

SDSneeds full understanding and cooperation of governments, enterprises, design and the public to achieve all-win situations. SYSTEM DESIGNFORSUSTAINABILITY BUSINESS INSTITUTION PUBLIC/ CONSUMER DESIGN 15.

In recent years, Chinese governments positively promote Scientific Outlook on Development, encourage circular economy, promote research on sustainable development, emphasizing on enterprises turning from made in China to innovated in China, producing value-added products, hope to gradually change develop mode on the base of resource consumption.

The governments also advocate harmonious society, hoping shake off the simple idea of economic development to achieve broad sense of sustainable society.

SDS STATE-OF-THE-ART IN CHINA

Institution 16.

Due to the financial crisis, central government begin pay attention to design, which seems can help enterprises get rid of the mode of imitation and Simple processing industry.

But in general, Chinese governments did not fully understand the importance of the role that design playing in sustainable development, and policy support is not enough. ForSDS,they are even lack of basic understanding.

Local governments concepts on design differ greatly. Part of them still pursueImage projectsand face projects, improving design and sustainable development only staying on slogan. Though understanding of parts of local governments on design gradually deepening, but lack of experience and specific measures on promoting design development by policy and integrating design in sustainable development of local economic and culture.

SDS STATE-OF-THE-ART IN CHINA

17. At present, most Chinese enterprises are at production stage, lack of design and develop capacities, andmanufacturing industry chain has not been well formed, enterprises relied on external market and mature product line model too much. Business

SDS STATE-OF-THE-ART IN CHINA

18.

SDS STATE-OF-THE-ART IN CHINA

Financial crisis brings disastrous impacts on many manufacturing enterprises. (The largest toy manufacturer closed down)2008 a wake-up call for China's manufacturing industry 19. At the same time,service-driven enterprises mainly providing network services rapidly developed:express, online shopping, telecommunications, Information services, catering, entertainment, and so on. Some Eco-Business in China enhance more than ever. Like BYD(Electric car), solar power industry, methane utilization technologies, straw energy technologies, and so on.

SDS STATE-OF-THE-ART IN CHINA

20. Chinese consumer get more rich than before. One side, abnormal consumption in Chinese rich class is not rare. In the trend of globalization, commercial groups drive mass media to advocate certain America standards of happiness, success and noble, and t he rich and the stars have always been to play as consumption modelto the public. the public often follow passively the step of fashion and success to the endless consumption black hole. Public/Consumer

SDS STATE-OF-THE-ART IN CHINA

21. On the other hand, green and environment protection awareness of the public significantly increased In recent years. Fashion is no longer single, but multiple! The influence of Chinese traditional culture revived, natural, green, and thrifty lift styles are more and more accepted by the public.

SDS STATE-OF-THE-ART IN CHINA

22. For enterprises, design is service industry, only plays as role of profit tool. For most of Chinese designer, design is only to provide dazzling forms of products, with less consideration on t he substance of the product, and not to concern about environmental protection and efficient use of resources. On the other hand, international sustainable design concepts are being continuously spread, and international sessions and cooperation projects on DFS in field of architecture, energy, transportation and culture spread become more and more. Design

SDS STATE-OF-THE-ART IN CHINA

23.

No doubt,LeNSproject would play an important role onDFSin China.

SDS STATE-OF-THE-ART IN CHINA

24.

ProfessorManzini s continuous efforts on promoting social innovation and sustainable designation in China.

SDS STATE-OF-THE-ART IN CHINA

25.

The establish of union ofDESIS China(Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability in China) in March 2009.And so on

SDS STATE-OF-THE-ART IN CHINA

All this effortmakes more and moredesign students and designers to understand thatDFSnot only mention physical products, but also is system innovation, institution innovation, and the changing of production and consumption modes. 26. As an independent social role, design has its ownvalues and social obligations. Chinese designers must change the trend taking stimulating consumption as the only vision, turning from form supplier to coordinator for interests of all parties, and continuously searching for a creative solution to achieve development of enterprises profits, consumers desires, environment benefits, sustainable usage of resources and social harmony.

SDS STATE-OF-THE-ART IN CHINA

27.

In financial crisis, processing enterprises are in trouble. Enterprises requirements on a new, differentiated profit model are more urgent than ever before. It is a time of changing!

SUM-UP: CHINAS OPPORTUNITIES

Local governments have strong rights, could partiallypromote establishment of new business models. We have seen that the governments began to value the functions of design and increase budget on design development, some attempts have began. Policy assurance on changing!

28.

Rapid spread of internet in China, and large amount ofpractitioners would greatly promote the development of service-based industries. Technology assurance on changing!

SUM-UP: CHINAS OPPORTUNITIES

There is a large-scale market in China, especially vast rural market becomes more and more active, providing broad application prospects toSDS the new rural policy: the abolition of all agricultural taxes and permission of land transfer

29.

SUM-UP: CHINAS OPPORTUNITIES

Though most Chinese do not know aboutSDS and the economy development and shaking off poverty and setting out on a road to prosperity are still the main purpose, but indications show that with propagating the concept ofdesign for sustainability, accumulating practical activities and enhancing peoples environmental awareness and concepts of harmonious society ,it is possible that China gets on the path of sustainable development. 30.
