of SiCpl/BaAl2Si2O8 Composites. — Homogeneous and transparent samples of the title glass-ceramic are synthesized by the sol—gel method using Si(OEt)4, Al(OiPr)3, and Ba(OAc)2 and characterized by XRD, TEM, SEM, DTA, and TGA. The flexural strength and fracture toughness of the BaAl2Si2O8 glass-ceramic matrix is greatlyimproved by addition of SiC platelets. By incorporation of 30 vol% SiC platelets, the flexural strength and the fracture toughness of the composites increase by 80% and 114% compared to the pure matrix, respectively. — (YE*, F.; GU, J.
