@ithout a sound and effecti$e ban"ing system in (ndia it cannot ha$e a healthy economy.

he ban"ing system of (ndia should not only be hassle free but it should be able to meetnew challenges posed by the technology and any other e;ternal and internal factors.*or the past three decades (ndiaDs ban"ing system has se$eral outstanding achie$ementsto its credit. he most stri"ing is its e;tensi$e reach. (t is no longer confined to onlymetropolitans or cosmopolitans in (ndia. (n fact, (ndian ban"ing system has reached e$ento the remote corners of the country. his is one of the main reasons of (ndiaDs growth

process. he go$ernmentDs regular policy for (ndian ban" since 9EFE has paid richdi$idend. Not long ago, an account holder had to wait for hours at the ban" counters forgetting a draft or for withdrawing his own money. oday, he has a choice. 2one are dayswhen the most efficient ban" transferred money from one branch to other in two days.

H apital ade1uacy ratio of the O.&. . is highest amongst the all public sector ban"sshowing the capacity of the ban" in terms of meeting the time liabilities and other ris"such as credit ris", operational ris" is better.

H Performance of the Punjab National ban" is moderate in terms of all parameters but N.P.#. is increasing at a higher rate of G.64J which could be harmful and createhindrance in the growth of the ban"s.

H %.&.(. performance in terms of business per employee is growing at a higher rateof 98.77J which shows the o$erall performance of the ban" is better.

H O.&. performance in terms of profit per employee is C.48J which is $ery low

showing surplus earned by the employee is $ery low.

*urther more the +&( administers the interest rates of Public sector &an"s and they ha$elittle control o$er the lending and borrowing rates. he pri$ate and foreign ban"s ha$etraditionally been $iewed as high cost operators. he reason for high operating e;pensesratio is that these ban"s ha$e been spending hea$ily on technology up gradation whichmay affect their profitability in short term but which will impro$e their long-term returnsas they le$erage the technology to pro$ide better customer support. #nother reason forhea$y operating e;penses ratio is these ban"s are spending hea$ily on their ad$ertisingcampaign for brand promotion. he nationali is still a popular brand for (ndian customer as far asmoney matters are concerned.
