The Sea

The sea surrounding the island, and separating us

from the rest of civilization represents isolation. The Sea isolates us from the

rest of the world, civilization, and everyone in

it. The fact that we are isolated in such a way shows that there are

endless possibilities of what could happen. We could go insane, become savage, or retain even more wisdom &

intelligence, and learn to cherish civilization.

Scar (area where plane crash

landed)The scar (as it is referred to in the novel and what we have chosen to refer to it

as) represents the strength and how strong of a factor

humans can play on anything from the

environment, to people. This is a prime example of the damage we caused on

the island and how strong of a factor humans can be,

whether intentional or not. Shows that humans are

very strong and influential, and although these may

seem like positive qualities, they tend to play a negative

role often.

CaveThe cave represents safety,

luxury and comfort, and how quickly all of this can be taken away. The factors

that affect this could be several. Weather can easily affect the cave and what it represents, and the actions

and decisions of humans are a strong factor. It can be a safe haven until it is

tampered with by humans, or the environment takes

its natural course of action on it. The cave shows how a level of comfort and safety can be disrupted so easily,

by a number of factors.

The TentThe tent that the group builds as a team for the

use of a protective shelter, to keep them dry, and defend them against Mother Nature

shows that with co-operation, humans can

accomplish so much with such little

resources. It shows our strength and

perseverance. As long as we work together the possibilities are endless.

FireFire is a sign of hope for us stranded on this island. As long as the fire is burning we have that little ray of hope that we could be

rescued at any moment in time. The fire also

represents the little faith that we will not turn to

savagery, but our attachment to the rest of

the world will keep us civilized and not make us

act upon only our primordial instincts. As long as the fire burns under our

consent, the longer and more hope we will retain.
