Biographical History: Sylvia Stant Bradley was born and raised in Wicomico County,

Maryland. Bradley graduated from Mardela High School and received her Bachelor of Science in

Education at Salisbury State Teacher’s College in 1961. Bradley later received her Master of

Science in Education from Salisbury State College in 1966 and her Master of Arts in History

from the University of Delaware in 1973. Bradley taught Colonial, British, and American history

at Salisbury State College from 1966 until her retirement in 2001. In 1982, Bradley co-founded

the Delmarva Historical Society, now the Edward H. Nabb Research Center for Delmarva

History and Culture, with G. Ray Thompson. In 1985, Bradley founded the Westside Historical

Society in Mardela Springs, Maryland, where she currently serves as executive director. She also

wrote and published the first comprehensive history of Salisbury University, Salisbury: from

Normal School to University in 2002. She wrote several histories about Delmarva such as,

Mardela Springs, Maryland: a History, Mapping Delmarva’s Past, and Historic Salisbury.

Sylvia married Donald L. Bradley (1934-1999) and has one son, George “Stan” Bradley.

Scope and Content Note: The Sylvia Bradley collection documents her research on the history

and culture of the Delmarva Peninsula with materials dating from 1841-1993, with the bulk of

the materials dating from 1970-1989. The documents encompass research done by Bradley on

the Eastern Shore of Maryland for several of her published histories and articles, including

Mardela Springs, Maryland: a History. Documents within the collection include manuscripts on

Eastern Shore women during the Civil War, student papers, Berlin Advance newspapers,

correspondence regarding Delmarva, and photographs of Eastern Shore cities.

Arrangement Statement: The Sylvia Bradley papers have been arranged into seven series,

LOCALITIES, AREA LIFE, STUDENT PAPERS, CIVIL WAR, WOMEN IN THE

NINETEENTH CENTURY, MATERIAL CULTURE, and RESEARCH NOTES.

Localities series documents areas on Delmarva. The Localities series is further subdivided into

eight subseries, Mardela Springs/Barren Creek, Delaware, Vienna, Wicomico County,

Delmarva, Greater Maryland, Sharptown, and Worcester County. Mardela Springs/Barren Creek

subseries documents the history of Mardela Springs/Barren Creek, Maryland and contains

photographs, copies of deeds and slave inventories, as well as drafts of Bradley’s Mardela

Springs: a History. Delaware subseries documents the history of Delaware, particularly

Rehoboth Beach through images and articles. Vienna subseries documents the history of Vienna,

Maryland. Wicomico County subseries documents the history of Maryland, focusing on the

Bicentennial of Maryland. Documents include correspondence and pamphlets. Delmarva

subseries documents various towns throughout Delmarva. Documents include photographs,

postcards, and maps. Greater Maryland subseries documents topics relating to Greater Maryland,

such as boundary lines, post office histories, and the creation of Maryland’s towns and cities.

Sharptown subseries documents the history of Sharptown, Maryland. Bradley’s notes and rough

draft of “Sharptown” are included within this subseries. Worcester County subseries documents

research done by Bradley on Snow Hill, Maryland.

Area Life series documents the culture of the Eastern Shore. It is further subdivided into four

subseries, Agriculture, Families, Churches, and Eastern Shore Events. Agriculture subseries

documents agriculture on the Eastern Shore through a series of magazines and newspapers.

Families subseries documents the Silverthrone, Bennett, and Wright families of the Delmarva

Peninsula through a series of family trees and correspondence. Churches subseries documents

several Methodist and Baptist churches on the Eastern Shore through correspondence and

newspaper clippings. Eastern Shore Events subseries documents different events that took place

on the Eastern Shore including the Great Salisbury Fireman’s Muster and Olympics and Phi

Alpha Theta inductions.

Student Papers series documents student papers from Bradley’s history courses taught at

Salisbury University as well as student papers from other Salisbury University teachers. All

student papers are based on different aspects of Eastern Shore culture and history.

Civil War series documents the drafts and manuscripts written by Bradley on Eastern Shore

women as southern spies in the Civil War. Documents included are drafts for “Spies, Agents, and

Sympathizers,” as well as a biography of Rose O’Neal Greenhow, 1815-1864.

Women in the Nineteenth Century series documents Bradley’s drafts and partial manuscripts

from Women in the Nineteenth Century, an article on women from the Eastern Shore and their

historical contributions.

Material Culture series documents Bradley’s interest in material culture dating from the 1890s to

the 1940s. Documents include World War II ration books, fashion advertisements, cookbooks,

and political campaign ephemera.

Research Notes series documents research notes taken by Bradley on the history of the Eastern

Shore. Documents include photocopies, notecards, speaking notes, and handwritten notes.
