FIRE TRAINING BUREAU Achieving proficiency and professionalism through training and education.
In February 2017, we started our Annual SCBA mask fit testing. SCBA and PPE maintenance and
inspections were reviewed. Drills were also conducted in regards to the NFPA and the State of Ohio
standards that PPE and SCBA donned under 1 minute each separately.
“A Know Your District Review” was also conducted which covered the Block Splits and discussed
“Tricks of the Trade” for finding addresses. High priority locations, streets with multiple sections and
identification by picture only were also included.
Body Armor was distributed to all Stations to be placed on the apparatus. The purpose of the
training that accompanied it was to verify that all of our personnel are familiar with Policy 903, the
body armor, and the care and maintenance of the vests to enable them to deploy them correctly.
The Bi-Annual Shift meetings were held to update all personnel on any issues in regards to
programs, policies, fire prevention, operations, training and safety.
As out new Sutphen Engine went into service to replace the current Engine 61, the month of
February ended with training to ensure that our personnel refreshed on the Apparatus, key
components, pump operations and hose load/pulls.
Weekly training tips have been sent out to cover a variety of issues in the Fire Service of the
company Officers to review and discuss with their crews.
Sylvania Fire & EMS currently has 61 of the 62 full-time employees that are Lucas County
Paramedics. In January , over 1026 hours of training were conducted; including the Lucas County
EMS Continuing Education which covered Pediatric Emergencies.
The ability to improve our service is generated through many ideas and initiatives that originate from
Our personnel, It is their values, energy, commitment and compassion that drive many of the Fire Training Bureau’s functions, programs, and activities that support the accomplishment of our
Mission of providing excellent service to the community.
