COMPETITIVE MUSIC FESTIVALS provide opportunities

for individual talent to be

developed to its best level.

They provide a platform for

amateur musicians and verse

speakers of all ages and levels,

and give an opportunity

to listen and learn from

the performance of other

competitors.

Most important is the

constructive criticism and

advice given by professional

adjudicators, helping

competitors to improve

their respective skills and

giving a deeper insight into

their chosen medium.

It is not really important

whether competitors achieve

first, second or third places

in a class, but the

adjudicators’ remarks both

on paper and in public give

a sense of achievement and

encourage development.

Many of today’s professionals

began by entering competitive

festivals. Cornwall Music

Festival is proud to name

among its former competitors

Sir David Willcocks,

Wendy Eathorne, Alan Opie

and Benjamin Luxon.

This Festival is affiliated to the

BRITISH AND INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF FESTIVALS FOR MUSIC, DANCE & SPEECH

of which HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN is Patron

PAUL PHILLIPS C O R N I S H D I A L E C T Paul was born at Leedstown near Hayle in 1937, from where he attended Helston Grammar School (hating every minute of it!) He left school at the age of sixteen and, following his ambition to be a policeman, joined the Metropolitan Police Cadet Force. He served at a number of East-End stations until his nineteenth birthday when he became a real policeman! It was here in London and in court that he met his lovely, half-Cornish wife Freda, whose mother came from Sennen. He remained in the Police Force until 1967 when, together with his wife and family, he returned to his roots and bought a small hotel in Porthleven. There he also pursued a career as a driving instructor, teaching no fewer than a thousand people. After that Paul’s career took many a turn and he eventually set up a firm of water engineers. This has been a real success story as today it employs 10 people.

Paul has retired several times but has never actually stopped work until 2014 and continues to be a full time carer for his wife, but even this doesn’t stop him pursuing a number of pastimes, including oil painting, and he is The Federation of Cornwall Old Cornwall Societies Dialect Recorder.

Paul considers himself privileged to have been born at a time when dialect was spoken quite commonly in daily conversations and chat. This form of self expression has always fascinated him and he makes a keen study of it today.

The closing date for entries is set as late as it possibly can be to allow for the annual gargantuan task of collecting, collating and typing up nearly a thousand entries, formulating a timetable, producing a programme and getting all to print in time for the Festival. Late entries, incorrect or missing fees and illegible forms increase the workload of an already overworked Entries Secretary, and risk not being accepted. Please do write clearly, check that the forms have been completed and enclose the correct fees – it will significantly reduce stress levels. Thank you!

A violin workshop will be held on Saturday 4 February 2017 at St John’s Church, Lemon Street, Truro. The tutor will be Krysia Osostowicz FGS. Krysia studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School, Cambridge University and in Salzburg with Sandor Vegh, founder of the International Music Seminar held annually at Prussia Cove. She has also studied the sonata repertoire with Radu Lupu, winner of the Leeds, Van Cliburn and Enescu international piano competitions.

Krysia has performed over 20 violin concertos ranging from Bach to Britten and her many CD recordings, both chamber music and solo, have won awards including the Gramophone Award, Deutscher Schallplattenpreis and Diapason d’Or. She leads the Dante String Quartet, is principal violinist with the Endymion Ensemble and previously played for fifteen years with the Domus Piano Quartet.

The teaching of Menuhin and Vegh is tempered by her own performing experience with emphasis on the links between technique and musical under-standing. She has taught at the Guildhall since 1987.

The cost of the workshop will be £30 per Violin Duo. Do not send the course fee with your entry as this will be collected later. Full details will be sent to the first ten pairs of players to enter the class. An accompanist will be provided for the workshop and will also be available for the heats. Elimination heats for the concerto (Class R 1) will be held on the Wednesday afternoon of 15 March, and the finalists will go forward to the final (Class R 2) on Wednesday evening.

C H I L D P R O T E C T I O N P O L I C Y

The British and International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech works for amateur festivals everywhere to help create thousands of educational performance opportunities for children and young people each year.

The Federation, and our member Festivals, are committed to ensuring safe environments for children and young people and believe that it is always unacceptable for a child or young person to experience abuse of any kind. We recognise our responsibil-ity to safeguard the welfare of all children and young people, by a commitment to recommend best practice which protects them.

This policy applies to our Board of Trustees, paid staff, Adjudicator members, volunteers, students or anyone working on behalf of the Federation and our member Festivals. We recognise that:

• the welfare of the child / young person is paramount• all children, regardless of age, disability, gender, racial heritage, religious belief, sexual orientation or identity, have the right

to equal protection from all types of harm or abuse• working in partnership with children, young people, their parents, carers and other agencies is essential in promoting young

people’s welfare.

The purpose of the policy:• to provide protection for the children and young people who participate in our festivals, including the children of festival members• to provide staff and volunteers with guidance on procedures they should adopt in the event that they suspect a child or

young person may be experiencing, or be at risk of, harm.

We will seek to safeguard children and young people by:• valuing them, listening to and respecting them• adopting child protection guidelines through procedures and safe working practice for staff and volunteers• recruiting staff and volunteers safely, ensuring all necessary checks are made• sharing information about child protection and safe working practice with children, parents, staff and volunteers• sharing information about concerns with agencies who need to know, and involving parents and children appropriately• providing effective management for staff and volunteers through supervision, support and training.

The Federation will review this policy each year in November in line with Safe Network guidance or sooner in the light of any changes in legislation or guidance. All changes will be communicated to our member Festivals in time for the start of the new Festival year.

C R E AT I N G S A F E R F E S T I VA L S F O R E V E RYO N E

The Federation and its member Festivals use the following policies and procedures to create Safer Festivals for everyone:

1 A single, definitive Child Protection Policy adopted by all Federation Festivals.

2 One or more designated Festival Safeguarding Officers (FSO) appointed for each Federation Festival. CORNWALL MUSIC FESTIVAL FSO: Becky Furse Tel 01326 372395

3 Best practice advice in the form of Safe Working Practice and Festival Child Protection leaflets, with support and training for all Festival staff and volunteers, including clear reporting procedures for anyone with a concern about a child.

4 Appropriate recruitment and induction procedures for all new Festival staff and volunteers responsible for providing safe environments for everyone attending / performing at a Federation Festival.

5 All Festival stewards wear a Festival badge. All teachers / parents / guardians / carers are asked to report all incidents of any nature to anyone wearing a Festival badge. All reported incidents will be handled in accordance with the Safe Working Practice and Festival Child Protection best practice advice. In addition we will ensure the availability of a quiet area / room where concerns can be expressed in private.

6 For the duration of the Festival all teachers / parents / guardians / carers are responsible for the continuous care and supervision of their own children / pupils / vulnerable adults. If they are unable to attend personally, they must delegate their responsibilities to an identified adult and ensure that their children / pupils / vulnerable adults are aware of the identity and name of the person responsible for their care. This includes supervision throughout all Festival venues, performance, warm up rooms and changing areas that may be provided.

7 No unauthorised photography, audio or video recording is allowed at our Festivals. Where parents / guardians / carers do not wish photos to be taken at all, then the responsible adult attending should ensure that their child / pupil / vulnerable adult is not included in official authorised photos.

8 Some children and vulnerable adults may have specific needs in order to take part. If this is the case we ask the responsible teachers / parents / guardians / carers to contact the Festival Organisers prior to arrival. The Festival actively seeks wherever possible to meet these needs, but must know beforehand in order to prepare support – or to advise that help cannot be provided on this occasion.

9 The Festival’s Child Protection Policy and approach to Creating Safer Festivals for Everyone is published explicitly in our Syllabus, Programme and Website. By completing and signing the entry form all parents / guardians / carers and teachers of entrants under 18 (or vulnerable adults of any age) confirm that they give (or have obtained) the necessary consents for the entrants to take part in the Festival. Without consent the entry to the Festival cannot be accepted.

S U P P O R T I N G

FOR OVER A CENTURY, Cornwall Music Festival has provided a platform for musicians and verse speakers of all ages to demonstrate Cornwall’s extraordinary wealth of talent.

Founded in 1910 by Lady Mary Trefusis, a keen musician who also co-founded the Association of Competition Festivals in 1904, the Festival has grown in scope over the years and is now enormous, offering well over 200 classes in an exhaustive variety of instruments and genres. This includes a Concerto Class with training workshop – something we believe is almost unique among music festivals.

WE WOULD LIKE to continue offering the same breadth of opportunity to performers for another hundred years. We try to keep

entry fees to a minimum but our costs are ever-growing, and entry fees and admission charges alone do not meet our overheads. The Festival is run entirely on a voluntary basis and depends on the generous financial support of all our Friends, Subscribers and donors; we are very grateful to them all.

IN ORDER to safeguard our future and help us to plan ahead with confidence, we invite you to consider supporting Cornwall Music Festival.

By enrolling as a Friend or becoming a Subscriber, you will be helping to guarantee the Festival’s future, giving some of the most talented people in Cornwall a vital opportunity to perform in public as well as giving audiences the chance to enjoy the results of their hard work and commitment.

The FRIENDS SCHEME is ideal for families. The set donation entitles an individual, couple or family to a free programme and free admission to every event during the Festival week, including the Gala Concert – especially useful when a number of children in the same family are taking part in a number of events. The Festival benefits from the guaranteed income. To enrol as a Friend for a year costs £25 for an individual, £40 for a couple or £50 for a family.

Alternatively the SUBSCRIBER SCHEME has no official lower limit to the donation, though a minimum of £10 per year is suggested. If you are a UK taxpayer, the Festival can considerably increase the benefit of your subscription by the use of Gift Aid.
