I. Course Description: Course Description:This year we will be taking an integrated thematic approach to our history and language arts. Much of the literature that we will be reading and analyzing in class with be historically based, and many will be non-fiction. The topics for history will be about early human societies including: Ancient Greece, Ancient Egypt, Kush, the Roman Empire, the birth of Christianity, Ancient China, India as well as early American civilizations. Students will learn various note-taking strategies and they will present learned information in a variety of ways. Writing, both formal and informal will be a critical part of this class. Students will write clear, coherent and focused paragraphs and essays. The students will exhibit descriptive, informative, persuasive, autobiographical, narrative, expository and technical writing ability.

I. Assignments: a. Homework

Students will receive homework each school day that is expected to be completed by the following school day. Their homework assignments will vary from note-taking and critical thinking questions to project-based activities. Critical thinking will be a large focus of instruction this year. Homework is an important aspect of this course as they will only be in class 2 days a week. The remaining 3 school days should be “home school” instruction by a parent. Students will be given a planner to write their homework assignments in each school day. Please check and sign your student’s planner each school day.

b. Reading Students will have assigned reading from their textbooks and/or other various sources. Additionally students will have free choice reading.

c. In Class AssignmentsStudents will also be expected to complete some assignments in class. We will do activities based on literature, various styles of writing as well as the social studies themes. Students will be expected to actively participate in class and will sometimes receive a participation grade for various activities.

c. BinderStudent will need a binder and tab dividers. In this binder students will keep and organize both their writing and other assignments. The binder will be checked and graded at the end of the learning period.

Textbooks: Holt World History Ancient Civilizations, journal provided by APL, planner provided by APL, various classroom novels and articles provided throughout the year.Other materials needed: binder paper, index tab dividers, pencils, binder.

III. Evaluation: Students will be assessed on in-class activities, homework, quizzes/tests projects/book reports and participation. All work needs to be completed on time to receive full credit. The following marks and corresponding percents will be used:

A 100-90B 89-80C 79-70D 69-60F 59 and below

IV. Late Work :Work turned in late and not associated with an absence will not earn full credit. Late work will be accepted one class day after it is due, then it will no longer be accepted and the resulting grade will be a zero. When a student is absent, missing work can be found on aplseeds.com.

V. Classroom Expectations: Students will need to come to class prepared to learn each school day. They need to bring their required materials provided by APL, paper and pencils. Attendance in our site classes are a privilege. If a student cannot maintain the appropriate classroom comportment that allows all students the environment to learn, they will be withdrawn from the site class and will need to complete their course of study at home.
