The question paper covering the entire course shall be divided into three sections as follows:

Section-A It will consist of 15 very short answer questions with answers from both Units to each question up to 50

words in length. All questions shall be compulsory. Each question shall carry two marks. Total weight

Introduction to Computer networks: Goals, Network hardware and Software, Classification of

networks-LAN, MAN and WAN, Network topologies, Applications. Reference models: OSI reference

model, TCP / IP reference model, Comparison between OSI and TCP / IP models.

Data Link Layer: Design issues, Services to network layer, Framing, Error control, Flow control.

Network layer: Design issues, Services to the transport layer, Routing algorithms- Static/ non-adaptive

and dynamic/adaptive algorithms. Transport layer: design issues, connection management-addressing,

establishing and releasing connection.

Unit-II

Internet: Introduction, Relays, Repeaters, Bridges, Routers, Gateways.

Internet working: Definition, Applications of Internet, internet architecture, difference between

network, internet and intranet , Electronic Mail, World Wide Web, Web Browsers, FTP, TELNET,

HTTP, SMPT, URL, Search Engine, Firewalls, The DNS Name Space. Network security: Types of

Network Security, Introduction to cryptography, Basic terminology used in cryptography, substitution

ciphers, transposition ciphers, fundamental principles of cryptography.
