FESTIVAL FAVOURITE The Lighting of the Sydney Opera House Sails tells the world that Vivid Sydney is on, and thrills residents and visitors alike.

This year, Vivid LIVE has commissioned award-winning international artists, 59 Productions, to create a new projection artwork for the sails. Lauded for developing 'the most sophisticated use of film in the theatre to date' (Metro) and creating 'an entirely new art form' (The Guardian, UK), 59 Productions now takes the iconic building on a dramatic journey through time – from the birth of architecture and civilisation through to the pinnacle of human and technological achievement.

Vivid Sydney’s dazzling Light Walk takes you on a magical journey through more than 50 ever-changing light installations, every night from 6pm to midnight.Once again, the sails of the Sydney Opera House are transformed by a sequence of stunning video-mapped projections.

From here, a series of interactive and immersive ‘light art’ sculptures and installations forms the renowned Vivid Light Walk. Some installations have a message, some are pure fun, many are interactive and all of them are free.

Look inside Geodesic Light Dome and watch the lights change colour and design, producing new combinations.Kaleido-Wall 1.0 appears in front of you

in the darkness as an interactive wall of mirrors, light and movement. Suspended above historic sandstone steps further along, the glowing Orb emits an intense golden light onto its surrounds like an artificial sun. Bathe in its warm amber glow as you study the intricate rose window pattern; you will also be able to see Orb from the other side of the harbour.

Nearby, bike helmets are suspended over the walkway in Peloton, a colourful tribute to the benefits of teamwork and environmental sustainability.

Next stop is First Fleet Park, where The Pool is laid out before you. You’re invited to enter, and jump on the brightly-coloured circular pads that swirl around you in changing patterns. The amazing whirlwind of Ray is a stunning display of light and colour, created before your eyes and powered by the sun. Take time to look around as the CBD skyline morphs into the abstract world of Filament Storm.

Further along George Street in a narrow cobblestone laneway, Heaven's Cloth hangs like a fishing net, packed with small ping-pong balls that light up in the breeze. It’s a colourful reminder of the maritime history of The Rocks.

Managing data is one of the biggest challenges; Heart of the City presented by IBM, is an elegant demonstration of the natural, organic and data-driven heart of the city.

Nearby, Clapiconia loves to perform and is set to become one of the most popular interactive light sculptures this year. Create your own clapping rhythm and you’ll be rewarded with a playful sound and light show in response. If you’ve ever fancied yourself as a plate-spinner, you will really enjoy Circus of Light. Glowing plates suspended mid-air whirl and change colour in a mesmerising display. Terra Incognita brings to life the diaries and sketches of Douglas Mawson’s expedition to Antarctica in 1911. Located inside the Cleland Bond building, the show is designed for both fully sighted and visually impaired visitors.

Brush up your ‘green’ knowledge while having some fun at Evolution, located in Campbells Cove. Use a touchscreen to compare light sources from old-fashioned tungsten filaments to cool LED lights. You’ll also get an update on power consumption, luminance and colour temperature.

A comforting white globe appears in the darkness, encouraging you to reach out and touch it. Create your own sparks of light by connecting with this lovely sculpture known as Sphera. After you walk beneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge pylon to Walsh Bay, a projection calls to you from the living rock. The Spirit of Patyegarang commemorates the young Eora girl who befriended First Fleet astronomer, Lt William Dawes, when he was observing the skies from the promontory that now bears his name. Created by the Bangarra Dance Theatre, it is the first indigenous contribution to

the Vivid Light Walk and commemorates one of the earliest ‘collaborations’ between the original custodians of the land and the new settlers.

Continue around to Walsh Bay and discover Sydney’s newest art precinct, where there are more amazing installations. If you’ve ever wondered what fishing in the dark is like, Lunar Net gives you a taste of the experience with a ghostly light sculpture that’s suspended beneath historic wharves. The nets gleam in the night light, voices travel across the water, and light is reflected everywhere. Hang out with LOL, located on the waters of the bay, for possibly the most rewarding laugh of your life.

When: Every night from 6pm to midnight, 23 May – 9 June, 2014

Where: Sydney Harbour foreshore from Sydney Opera House to Walsh Bay.

GAMMA WORLD – ORIGINAL FACADEGamma World takes the audience from one space to another in a constant flux of movement. Transformed by artist, Jess Johnson, the MCA building morphs into a dynamic performance space, coming to life, changing its appearance, and even seeming to change its structure through the use of isometric designs, old-school gaming, pop-up

3D books and forced perspective. As each chapter evolves, drama and emotion are created through animation and visual effects, taking the viewer on an abstract, emotional and playful journey through constantly changing worlds.Gamma World is presented by Jess Johnson, the Spinifex Group, TDC – Technical Direction Company, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia and Destination NSW.

DICHROIC DIMENSIONS – MORDANT WINGA collaboration between The Digital Shamans, and artist Ross Manning, Dichroic Dimensions seeks to rouse an ‘inner awakening’, as the human voice manipulates multi-layered shards of light revealed only when attenuated sound frequencies are triggered.Inspired by Manning’s work with light, The Digital Shamans integrate ‘visible’ sound and vibration to create specific

frequencies that in turn produce invisible mandalas which influence particles on a molecular level. Combining the hi-tech with the organic, the soundscape features synthesisers, singing bowls and the bit-crushed beats of taiko drums.Dichroic Dimensions is presented by Ross Manning, the Digital Shamans, TDC – Technical Direction Company, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia and Destination NSW.

MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART AUSTRALIA

Over the 18 days and nights of Vivid, the sixth floor of the MCA is where you can connect with some of the world’s best creative minds. As well as more than 100 events to challenge and inspire you, there’s also the relaxed vibe of The Lounge, open to the public every night from 7pm.

WHAT’S ON AT THE MCA

CUSTOMS HOUSE

MARTIN PLACE

The grand, heritage exterior of Customs House at Circular Quay becomes a unique plaything for Vivid fans who want to have some fun with a world first interactive building projection.

Transformed by French projection wizards Danny Rose, the facade becomes a series of gigantic musical instruments which you can play in real time. Just pick your favourite image from a touchscreen, wave your hands and watch in awe as a fantastical instrument comes to life in front of you. You’ll get to share your composition with an audience of thousands!

Play Me! is presented by Danny Rose, TDC – Technical Direction Company, Customs House and the City of Sydney.

When: Every night from 6pm to midnight, 23 May – 9 June, 2014

Where: Customs House Alfred Street, Circular Quay.

In 2014, for the first time, Martin Place, the heart of the city’s CBD, becomes an integral part of Vivid Sydney.

Two spectacular light installations commissioned by Destination NSW flank the Cenotaph in this new Vivid precinct. A gentle lighting treatment honours this solemn memorial and pays homage to those who have given their lives for their country; on either side cutting-edge lighting and the latest in experiential interactivity are combined with great artistry to create beautiful installations.

Is it a real flower or just an apparition? The petals of Sky Flower unfold in a moving hymn of ever-changing colour. With e|MERGEnce, a webcam maps your face and all its expressions onto a three-dimensional, 1.6m sculptured head, which is ‘eMERGing’ from the flagstones of the square. Check out Intel’s interactive activation in Martin Place.

When: Every night from 6pm to midnight, 23 May – 9 June, 2014

Where: Martin Place, between George and Castlereagh streets.

When: Every night from 6pm to midnight, 23 May – 9 June, 2014 Where: 140 George Street, The Rocks.

Page 6: SYDNEY IN WINTER - Destination NSW · Kaleido-Wall 1.0 appears in front of you in the darkness as an interactive wall of mirrors, light and movement. Suspended above historic sandstone

HARBOUR LIGHTSFor the first time in 2014, Vivid Sydney extends onto the harbour.

Many of the cruise vessels, ferries and water taxis that travel around the harbour will be decorated with brilliant LED lights that change colour as they enter different parts of the harbour. These ‘colour precincts’ will be computer controlled using Intel technology and the latest in sat-nav geo-positioning; Harbour Lights will give Vivid another technological world first. Enjoy the spectacle of the nightly light shows from a Sydney Ferry, Captain Cook Cruises, Sea Sydney Cruises or Matilda Cruises. Presented by 32 Hundred Lighting and Destination NSW.

When: Every night from 6pm to midnight, 23 May – 9 June, 2014

Where: Board a ferry at Circular Quay, King Street Wharf and other wharves around the harbour.

SYDNEY HARBOUR BRIDGE

NORTH SYDNEY Make a night of it and book a table at a harbourside eatery at McMahons Point, Milsons Point or Kirribilli.

North Sydney offers some of the best views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House and the city during Vivid. It’s also a great place to view the Harbour Lights and the starting point for a walk across the bridge into the city. Don’t miss the Sea of Lanterns at Bradfield Park and North Sydney Olympic Pool’s multi-media exhibition.

SYDNEY HARBOUR BRIDGEOne of the most popular Vivid Sydney installations is back, offering everyone another chance to design their own light show on this iconic piece of Australian architecture.

From an interactive touchscreen located on the boardwalk near Luna Park, choose your own colours and sequences, and watch in awe as your illuminated creation brings life to the beautiful grey arches.

Stacked with over 100,000 energy-efficient LED lights, Light the Bridge has been designed especially for Vivid Sydney by those luminaries of illumination, Iain Reed and 32 Hundred Lighting, and has 4th Generation Intel Core Processors at its heart. Valued supporters are Intel,

North Sydney Council, Roads and Maritime Services, and 32 Hundred Lighting in partnership with Destination NSW.

When: Every night from 6pm to midnight, 23 May – 9 June, 2014

Where: Boardwalk near Luna Park, Olympic Drive, Milsons Point.

THE VIVID CLIMBFor the first time in 2014, turn the ‘Climb of Your Life’ into your very own lightshow. By wearing a special Vivid Climb vest, your heartbeat brightens up the summit in your own personal light show.

NATURAL ATTRACTIONFor a global city, Sydney has an astonishingly large number of national parks and nature reserves, just waiting to be explored.

The city itself still has extensive tracts of harbourside native bushland in Sydney Harbour National Park where you can walk for hours discovering bird, animal and plant life. While the most popular

natural wonderlands are the Royal, Lane Cove and Ku-ring-gai Chase national parks, there are plenty of others that are less well known. In Garigal National Park, there are pretty riverside walks, picnic spots and canoes for hire while Kamay Botany Bay National Park, south of the city, has self-guided walks with Aboriginal and European heritage sites.

To the west are several great spots – Yellomundee Regional Park, popular with mountain bikers, bushwalkers and horse riders; in Scheyville National Park, bird watching, bushwalking and a local history trail are the highlights. Rouse Hill Regional Park has cycling and walking tracks as well as colonial heritage sites.

From exquisitely manicured gardens to wild bushland, Sydney's generous parks and gardens ensure that nature is never more than a step away.

Centennial Parklands, a 360-hectare reserve of undulating parkland and woods in Sydney's east, is one of the city's greatest green spaces. Go horse riding, cycling, rollerblading, play football or cricket or just enjoy long, rambling strolls.

The Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney is a 30-hectare oasis, winding along the harbour's edge; join a free, daily tour

of this beautiful botanic world. At Darling Harbour, the soothing Chinese Garden of Friendship is a lovely walled paradise with waterfalls, lakes, exotic plants and hidden stone pathways. Nearby Darling Quarter is where to take the kids for water games, climbing ropes, swings, slides, and a flying fox guaranteed to keep them entertained for hours. Cycling, running, walking and picnics are popular at Parramatta Park, an 85-hectare parkland in Sydney’s west with playgrounds, formal English gardens, and bush and river tracks.

HEALTHY & SCENIC SYDNEYWhether you are new to Sydney or a regular visitor, enjoy the cooler Autumn and Winter months by combining a walk or run with fantastic scenery.

With its clifftop, park and ocean views, the Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walk is one of Sydney's most famous trails, a real must-do Sydney experience. The Hermitage Foreshore Walk is another fabulous 2 km-walk from Rose Bay to Nielsen Park.

On the northern beaches, the Manly to Spit Bridge Scenic Walkway is a feast of coastal views, bushland and stunning harbour lookouts while the 4 km Bare Island to Henry Head Coastal Walk unlocks the Southern Ocean coastline from La Perouse. For the ultimate Sydney walking expedition, embark upon Sydney's Great Coastal Walk, from Barrenjoey on the northern beaches to Royal National Park just south of Sydney. It's 100 km of unbroken beautiful views. Take a week to tackle it all, or break up the walk into sections.

UNCOVERING SYDNEY’S STORYUnique museums are dotted around the city centre offering very different perspectives on this vibrant city. Why not put a few of them on your must-visit list this Winter?

Along Macquarie Street you’ll find the Mitchell Library, part of the State Library of NSW, The Mint, and Hyde Park Barracks Museum. Use the Sydney Museums Pass to discover the best heritage attractions at your own pace. Other fascinating places to visit include Sydney Jewish Museum in Darlinghurst, the Nicholson Museum at The University of Sydney and the Sydney Harbour Bridge Pylon Lookout and Museum.

Stretch your style imagination this Winter by exploring Sydney’s buzzing hubs of vintage, indie and designer fashion weekend markets!

› In the inner west, Balmain, Glebe and Rozelle have weekend markets which together have more than 300 stalls of vintage, emerging designers and accessories of all sorts

› Bondi Markets and Paddington Market have been traditional breeding grounds for future design stars; you’ll still find fashion here that’s ahead of the game

MARKET CALENDARSHOPPING IN THE CITYWhether you want to seek out the latest labels and your favourite designers or just want to check out the new season’s styles, you will love Sydney’s shopping choices.

Australia’s two major department stores, David Jones and Myer, are located in the heart of the city and Westfield Sydney's boutiques will tempt you with the best in high-end fashion, Gucci, Hugo Boss, Guess, as well as fashion favourites,

GAP and Zara. Historic shopping arcades, the Queen Victoria Building and the Strand Arcade, house boutique stores packed with stylish jewellery, shoes, fashion and accessories. AFFORDABLE AND DELICIOUS FOODAs well as fabulous five star dining, there are plenty of spots to eat out in Sydney that serve delicious, well-priced fare.

A great place to start is one of the city’s many dining precincts such as Crown Street in Surry Hills, King Street in Newtown or Cockle Bay and Darling Harbour. Venture down laneways and behind hidden doorways for little gems such as York Lane, The Roosevelt, Grandma's Bar, Stitch, The Grasshopper, and acclaimed whisky bar, Baxter Inn. The Sydney small bar scene is big on imagination, with cool, quirky themes

on show. Try Guatemalan-themed tequila joint, Tio's in Surry Hills and its neighbour, Button Bar, a rum-soaked pirate's den. FINE WINESWhy not explore the beautiful NSW wine regions close to the city?

Australia’s oldest wine-producing region, the Hunter Valley, and one of its newest, the Southern Highlands, offer plenty of tempting food and wine experiences as well as a range of accommodation from five-star resorts to luxe guesthouses, B&Bs and country cabins. Sample local gourmet produce from olives to cheese, chocolate to coffee, pick berries fresh from the farm or meet the farmers and winemakers. You’re bound to find something special in one of the 150-plus wineries, vineyards and cellar doors in

the Hunter Valley, while the Southern Highlands has 15 cellar doors in an idyllic country setting. Another wine region, the Shoalhaven, has 13 cellar doors with the majority located around Gerringong, Berry and Shoalhaven Heads. Medal-winning, cool-climate wines are now being produced at Coolangatta Estate, where Alexander Berry planted the first vines of the region in the 1820s. A local cellar door trail leads to some very enjoyable food and wine experiences ranging from French provincial in style to modern Australian.

With cooler weather on the way, it’s time to begin planning a short break in NSW during Autumn and Winter.

REGIONAL NSWSHORT BREAKS

COLOURFUL SHORT BREAKSThe regions within three hours’ drive of Sydney offer an inspiring list of experiences perfectly suited to a short break or easy getaway with the kids.

This beautiful time of the year is when cool-climate gardens in the Southern Highlands and the Blue Mountains are colourful and romantic, and bushwalks and cosy pub lunches are especially welcoming. Wander through weekend village markets that are packed with freshly-picked local food and artisan produce, join a chestnut picking tour or learn how to make jams and jellies from fresh seasonal fruit. In the Blue Mountains you can even celebrate Christmas in July with Yuletide fare and good cheer. Along the coast,

walking tracks and cycle paths can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace.

In Port Stephens and Jervis Bay, the resident dolphins share the limelight with migrating whales as they cruise along the NSW coast during their journey to warmer waters. It’s also a good time of the year to get great accommodation deals at a desirable beach location from Wollongong to the Central Coast, Newcastle to Port Stephens. In the Hunter Valley, the vintage season is well under way, celebrated with a calendar of exciting food, wine and music events as clear blue skies, bare vines and colourful gardens turn the region into a photographer’s dream.

NATURAL HIGHS Wherever you stay on your short break, you’re bound to be close to one of the State’s 850 national parks or reserves.

Take your walking boots, a day pack or overnight gear, and head out in search of adventure; from idyllic day walks to soul searching multi-day treks, there’s a walk for everyone. Great day walks include the stunning coastal track in Bouddi National Park on the Central Coast or the mammoth 250 km, 16-day Great North Walk from Sydney’s Lane Cove to the Hunter Valley and Newcastle. Passing through several national parks, including Brisbane Water National Park (for 34 km), it’s often described as one of the best walks in NSW.

Other inspiring walks include Belmore Falls Walking Track in Morton National Park and the National Pass Walk in Blue Mountains National Park, which takes you past waterfalls and scenic lookouts.

During Winter, you may be lucky enough to do some whale-watching from a coastal national park. In Port Stephens, the invigorating short walk to the summit of Tomaree Head offers unparalleled views of the region’s waterways and coastline while the White Sands Walk at Jervis Bay is a beautiful, and easy, loop walk. Along the track, you’ll be treated to serene bay views, seeing birds in the wild and dolphin-watching. For outdoor fun, take the kids to Hunter Wetlands National Park near Newcastle for a picnic and easy cycling or wander along the scenic trails of the Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area, near Wollongong.

EATING OUT Chefs are making their mark on dining experiences in NSW by using fresh regional produce as the basis for terrific menus.

In the quaint villages of Katoomba, Leura, Wentworth Falls and Blackheath, you’ll find a range of cosy cafés, restaurants, country pubs and wine bars to choose from. Popular Leura Garage is worth a visit for its Central Ranges wine list and hearty Italian-inspired menu – but for special occasions, hatted Darley’s at Lilianfels, and Echoes restaurant, with its stunning views, are perfect. Beachside Newcastle is also a very appealing food and wine destination. Now, with hatted restaurants Subo and Restaurant Mason, the city has some serious food

credentials. Eating out in Newcastle has never been more enjoyable so check out the city’s four distinctive dining neighbourhoods – The Boardwalk at Honeysuckle Wharf, Beaumont Street in Hamilton, Darby Street in Cooks Hill and The Junction.

Along the Central Coast, cafés and restaurants are dotted along beaches and inland from Pearl Beach and Erina to Hardy’s Bay, Killcare and Terrigal. Wollongong also has some fantastic beachside eateries with sublime ocean views including a string of cafés and pubs along the scenic coastal drive from Stanwell Park to Austinmer, Thirroul and on, to Gerringong.

There are now so many seriously good places to eat out in regional NSW that your next short break could be all about the food! To help your planning, here’s a list of restaurants that have recently won awards for their fine food, service and/or wine lists:

› Blue Mountains – Darley’s, Restaurant Como

› Central Coast – Manfredi at Bells, Pearls on the Beach, Reef Restaurant, The Cowrie

› Hunter Valley – Bistro Molines, Chez Pok, Muse Kitchen, Muse Restaurant, Restaurant Botanica, Roberts Restaurant

› Newcastle – Carrington Place, Merewether Surfhouse, Subo, Restaurant Mason

› Southern Highlands - Biota Dining, Eschalot, Horden’s

› Wollongong – Caveau.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS Why not take the kids to a farmstay or on a camping adventure during Autumn or Winter this year and enjoy beautiful weather in the great outdoors.

They’ll have fun feeding the chickens, going for hayrides and exploring the countryside. It’s also a great way for the whole family to relax and reconnect over a campfire or by discovering the stars together. And whether you enjoy travelling with your own caravan, staying in a cosy cabin or pitching your tent,

you’ll find the perfect holiday park in a scenic location, many with million-dollar views. The other good news is that holiday parks offer a variety of styles of accommodation to suit every budget. You might like to set up in a private ensuite site in a pretty riverside location, pitch a tent by the beach or enjoy a touch of luxury in a five-star, self-contained cabin. Facilities are likely to range from swimming pools and tennis courts to landscaped gardens and BBQs.

FLYING GETAWAYS A network of regional airports makes it easy to fly in for a short break at great locations around NSW.

Why not fly to Orange to explore food and wine trails, especially around Easter when Orange F.O.O.D. Week kicks off? The beautiful beaches of Byron Bay and surrounding World Heritage national parks are a 70-minute flight from Sydney; book in for a short break during Lismore’s Opera in the Channon in July.

Other exciting events coming up during Winter include Deni Blues & Roots Festival in April (fly to Albury) and Coffs Harbour’s Australian Surf Festival in August.

More short break destinations especially enjoyable during Winter include Byron Bay (fly to Ballina), the Snowy Mountains (Canberra), New England North West (Armidale) and Outback NSW (Broken Hill).

Outdoor sports and activities are enjoyable at any time of the year.

› Get your adrenalin pumping on a sand-boarding adventure on Stockton Beach sand dunes

› Go caving, rock-climbing and abseiling in the Blue Mountains

› Hire a bike and hit the mountain trails of Glenworth Valley

› Get your thrills in Wollongong with hang gliding, paragliding, and sky diving onto the beach

› Go mountain biking on dirt tracks to spectacular viewpoints in Morton National Park
