SCOTS AND SAAREMAA

Another rummage in the Programme collection and memories of another trip to the Isle of Wight to see a Team of which I had never heard and had no idea as to where they came from in the geographical sense. We are back in 2011 when the Island Games were held on the Isle of Wight with the Football Competition very much to the forefront. Fifteen Islands had entered and were initially divided in to three groups of four and one of three with the teams in each group playing each other once. The morning game on the day of my visit was in the group containing three sides – Aland, the Western Isles and SAAREMAA. I had a vague idea as to the whereabouts of Aland – it is a group of Islands in the Baltic Sea and “belongs” to Finland - but Saaremaa? It transpires it is an Island off Estonia, again in the Baltic Sea, and is considered as part of Estonia. The game in question was between the Western Isles and Saaremaa and played at the Isle of Wight Community Club ground, better known on the Island over the years as the Plessey Ground. This is some two hundred yards past Westwood Park in Cowes on the same side of the road, so it was a case of climbing the hill and more and a

ground that has a strong cricketing heritage with Hampshire playing a County Championship match there every year in the late fifties and early sixties. It is currently used for football by Northwood St. Johns and Osborne Coburg in the Island Saturday League. Nearly nine years on it is difficult to remember too much about the game though the standard was certainly below that of our Premier Division. The Western Isles side were all well-built “craggy” Scots lead by a burly and hard-working number nine but Saaremaa were quicker and nimbler and enjoyed the support of their fellow Islanders, including the almost statutory fair haired young ladies, who were competing in other sports. One obscure memory of the day relates to shin pads. They are still an integral and compulsory part of equipment but have grown smaller over the years as technology has increased but one of the heavily built Scottish defenders gave every impression of having a hardback copy of the Official Oxford English Dictionary tucked in to each sock. Saaremaa scored just after the break (Thorwald-Eirik Kaljo) and again in the closing minutes (Elari Valmas) for a 2-0 victory but were pipped by Aland in a play-off played at Rookley for a semi-final berth and eventually finished sixth out of the fifteen entrants. All four Match Officials on the day have had or have Wessex League connections with referee Justin Amey now on the Football League line. It is difficult to find any details of organised football on Saaremaa but the Island does have a side in the main League in Estonia and population wise they had more to draw on than their Scots opponents. There are two Leagues in the Western Isles, the Lewis & Harris and the Uist & Barra, with eight and six sides respectively, which come under the auspices of the Scottish FA whilst Saaremaa are not affiliated to either UEFA or FIFA. It was an enjoyable morning and experience- followed by the long, very long, walk to East Cowes Vics and a cracking game between Guernsey and the Isle of Man. The organisation was first class and the week ended with the Isle of Wight team taking the trophy, with Guernsey (silver) and Jersey (bronze).

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES (TO SOME!) This is sadly written prior to the last Saturday of February thereby making the comparisons as of the end of the month – the comparisons being as to how Clubs are faring at this stage of the season as against the same time last year, perhaps a little artificial. This is largely an “arithmetical” exercise and does not fully take in to account variance in the number of games played or suggest any reasons for any improvement or decline. One Club has made enormous strides forward and are to be congratulated but more of that anon as we look initially at the Premier Division. Last season SHOLING were favourites for the title before a ball was kicked and totally justified that favouritism and at the end of February were already twelve points clear with HORNDEAN, BOURNEMOUTH and PORTLAND UNITED filling the next three places. Horndean are currently sixth, with eight points fewer, Portland are mid table with the same points deficit but Bournemouth’s fortunes have fallen rapidly as they sit in eighteenth place with a drop of 39 points. HAMWORTHY UNITED and BAFFINS MILTON ROVERS, who completed the top six, are also mid table, though the second named have undoubtedly played fewer games, but ALRESFORD have made a major advance with twenty one points more than last season and second spot in the table, having led for many weeks prior to Christmas. HAMBLE CLUB, BASHLEY and TADLEY CALLEVA are points and position wise close to last season but AFC PORTCHESTER, like Alresford, have greatly improved their position. Tenth with 36 points has this season become third with fifty three points and promotion within reach. BROCKENHURST and SOLENT UNIVERSITY have slipped slightly, though the latter have probably played fewer games, but the Clubs in 13th and 17th place last season are very much on an upward curve. LYMINGTON TOWN are fifth with an increase of fourteen points while FAREHAM TOWN are ninth with a similar points improvement. SHAFTESBURY and COWES SPORTS have marginally less points but are in basically the same League positions, which, leaving aside the two relegated Clubs, BEMERTON HEATH and ANDOVER NEW STREET, takes us to the Club that has made the greatest improvement -CHRISTCHURCH, twelve places and nineteen points to the good compared with the end of last February and having played less games.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 35

In Division One AMESBURY TOWN were three points clear at the top of the table with AFC STONEHAM nine points behind in fourth place and both were to eventually gain promotion, since when the latter have gone from strength to strength and currently top the Premier Division with further possible promotion in sight. HYTHE & DIBDEN and US PORTSMOUTH were both in the top five, as they are now, but ROMSEY TOWN have not enjoyed such a good season having dropped from third to eleventh with 32 less points on the board. Both DOWNTON and NEWPORT have improved in terms of points (ten) but the other Island side, EAST COWES VICS, have fallen away from seventh to seventeenth with just over a fifty per cent drop in points. FAWLEY AFC and VERWOOD TOWN have dropped from 13th and 8th to sixteenth and thirteenth respectively whilst LAVERSTOCK & FORD are one spot higher though with three more points on the board. ALTON are the biggest climbers – from 15th to sixth - and WHITCHURCH UNITED have also made ground having moved up three places in the table whilst PETERSFIELD TOWN have a four place improvement. RINGWOOD TOWN and NEW MILTON are very much as they were, though the former have less points, and ANDOVER TOWN’s improved form sees them six places and a dozen points to the good. For FOLLANDS and TOTTON & ELING it is very much as before with both still in the table’s lower reaches. But there are still two months to go!

CLUB NEWS

Lewis Whyton reached a big appearance milestone at Bournemouth last week. It was his 500th game for Portland United. Dorchester born; Lewis started playing at the age of seven for a team called Grove Sports. Brian Simpson was his first manager. The team name changed to Portland Youth at under 11s and Bob Chapman was manager until the under 13s. David Laming then ran the team till the under 15s and the team then folded. Lewis has always enjoyed all sports - especially athletics but more especially - football! He grew up travelling to Portland games watching his father, Darren, play for years. Lewis started playing for Portland’s first team at the age of 14. Andy Mason

and Micky Greeno were the managers at this point and Lewis and Ross Doidge were the strike force! Now in his fifteenth season at Portland his first goal for the Blues came on the road against Brockenhurst in his first start for the club, and he was also the youngest person to score a hat trick in the Wessex League against Fareham and has represented the County at football. His role these days is normally at centre back - but he also admits to really enjoy playing as a striker which he did at Bournemouth last time out. His father, Darren, played his first FA Cup game on the 20th August 2005 away at Odd Down (losing 2 - 0) and playing in that game was his son, Lewis. Darren, up until now, was the only Portland player to have represented the Blues 500 times, congratulations from the League are due on reaching this milestone. Thanks to Lin McKechnie for the story and the club for use of the picture (above). On the opposite side of the coin so to speak, the club have also reported the passing of Malcolm Coe. He’d been a part of the club for many years including physio work and minibus driver. Condolences to family and friends. We also hear there’s a number of United Services Portsmouth players approaching the 100 appearance milestone- more on that as and when we hear! Ronan Moore has re-joined the Badger sett at Brockenhurst after a spell down the A337 at Lymington Town, and we hear that former Lymington defender Steve Walker has linked up with Amesbury Town. In the dugouts, Shaftesbury have appointed former Hamworthy United Manager Callum Brooks to their Management team and was lined up to take his place against the Hammers yesterday afternoon, whilst at the Specsavers County Ground, we hear that Hamworthy United were raising awareness of the campaign FootballvHomophobia ahead of the game- featuring the rainbow stripes and the special ball being displayed in the Hammers’ trophy cabinet.

[Pictured left] Bob Purkiss presents the Alton Management team of Kevin Adair, Carl Harris and Jack Harris with their January MJM Sports Kappa Respect award for Division 1. Ethan Taylor made his 100th appearance for Solent University FC yesterday, recovering from injury, he completed this feat when appearing as a substitute in the game against AFC Portchester. Since making a goal scoring debut as a sixteen year old in a game against Fawley AFC in January 2017, Taylor has netted a total of 42 goals, which is all the more remarkable considering he played the entire 2017/18 in the left-back position. The total includes 16 league and cup goals in the current campaign. He becomes

the 13th Team Solent/Solent University FC player to complete the 'ton' the others being: Matt Sheedy (170), Jim Orvis (162), Jemal Wiseman (148), Patrick Nolan (139), Jesse Waller-Lassen (137), Mike Wheeler (136), Leo Churms (129), Tom Taylor (118), Ash Stoneman (108), Theo Tonkin (104), Silvano Obeng (102), Steve

Black (100), all having served the club well.

FA COMPETITIONS 2020/21

WEEKEND MATCH REPORTS

Mike Robins writes HAMWORTHY UNITED 4-1 SHAFTESBURY ONE of the few games to survive this weekend and despite sun, rain, fierce wind and a 90 second hailstorm of biblical proportions, an entertaining affair at the end of the day. The early chances went in favour of the visitors, kicking towards the Bridge End with the backing of a bitterly cold wind. The most exciting part of the opening stages though was that the low sun was causing shirt colour difficulties- claret opposed to red isn’t an easy watch regardless and Hamworthy were obliged to change to their yellow away shirt.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 35

The best chance fell to the Rockies from the re-start with keeper Tom Rees diving on the ball on the line with just nine minutes on the clock. Shaftesbury keeper Rowan Graven was the busier of the two though as we crossed midway point through the half. Cameron Munn denied a chance by the keeper when a goal looked the likely outcome, he was again on hand to save from Eddie Hodge around half an hour in, but shortly afterwards he had no answer to MUNN converting from close to the penalty spot to put the Hammers ahead. Graven then did well in the dying moments of the half to keep it that way tipping over a Hodge effort. HT 1-0 Barely two minutes into the second half, MUNN then made it two, turning at the edge of the penalty area to see his strike find the net with more than a little help from an outstretched defenders’ leg. The sky was darkening and everyone was caught in a tremendous (short) hailstorm. However the game continued and a swift re-appearance of the sun was most welcome. Shaftesbury then got back into the game. With 62 minutes gone, Connor Millar was able to get ahead of the two Hamworthy centre backs and the ball came to Mali BENJAMIN who made no mistake from eight yards. They almost drew kevel five minutes later. A Millar corner fell nicely to Jack Vallis at the back post who somehow contrived to put it over the bar when it looked easier to score than miss. From then on, the was only going to be the one winner. An effort from Nick Hewlett in the 77th minute the only goal threat. By then though HODGE had restored the two goal cushion, hitting the net from close range after a miscued clearance. Coming into the last ten minutes Hamworthy grabbed a fourth when the hard working Connor COCKLIN squeezed his shot between keeper and post to put the result beyond doubt. Both Hodge and sub Fawzi Saadi then tested Graven, but there was no further scoring. FT 4-1

Roger Allen writes RINGWOOD TOWN 4-0 WHITCHURCH UNITED WITH a winless streak going back almost to the start of the year, this was a good victory for Ringwood avenging a defeat in the earlier fixture at Whitchurch by the same margin. For Whitchurch it was one of those days, I suspect they would still be goalless if they were still playing now. A blustery wind was always going to make it difficult for the players but a word for the Ringwood groundsman who produced a pitch that was immaculate given the monsoon conditions of recent days.

Ringwood took the lead with almost their first attack on 11 minutes. A through ball split the Whitchurch defence for Ryan Hamm to run onto. It was close and the Whitchurch defence were desperately seeking an offside flag that never came. Eventually the ball reached Matt CASEY via Ben Harris and he finished well from 10 yards with a side foot shot. Shortly afterwards Whitchurch came close to equalising when Lloyd Thompson was one

on one with Ringwood keeper, Liam Harris, who saved with his legs. Whitchurch thought they should have been awarded a penalty as skipper Ryan Long appeared to be brought down by a clumsy tackle just inside the penalty area but the referee waved away their appeals. At this stage Whitchurch were having plenty of the ball but their attacks lacked any serious threat to the Ringwood defence. HT 1-0

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 35

Early in the second half Ringwood carried the greater threat and Hamm scuffed an early shot when well placed. The second and probably decisive goal came 5 minutes after the restart. Again both Hamm and CASEY were involved and the latter was left with a simple tap in at the far post. Both sides had chances to score before the third goal came in the 76th minute. The ball broke to Harrison CLARKE just outside the penalty area and his first time left foot shot flew into the corner giving keeper Szymaniak no chance. Ringwood's afternoon was completed a minute before time when two substitutes Jack RANSOM and Sam Brown exchanged passes for the former to score just inside the keeper's near post. FT 4-0 John Gorman writes ALTON 2-3 TOTTON & ELING ANYONE looking at the League Table before the game, and indeed probably to some watching the game, this was a strange result as the visitors twice came from a goal down before snatching victory at the last after Alton had very much overall dominated the ninety minutes – but it is goals that win matches and the home side simply did not take their chances. In bright sunshine and a swirling wind Alton wasted an early free kick as a prelude to a long spell of pressure. Liam Knight wriggled his way along the bye line but his cross was missed by all in the six yard box and Totton keeper Oli Eyres did well to hold a low cross from Steve Phillips. As the sunshine gave way to heavy rain Knight reached a ball on the left wing that the defender thought was going out, but Matt Benham was too high from the cross and Eyres then somehow got both hands to a close range header. As is often the case in these situations, having been very much on the back foot the visitors had the first real chance. Joe Sutherden broke clear as the home defence failed to deal with a long ball forward but keeper Steve Douglas advanced quickly, got his hand to the shot, and then smothered the follow up. Alton continued to press and when Matt Graham found Luke Perkins in space on the right, the winger cut inside only for his effort from some twenty yards to rebound off the crossbar. With thirty minutes gone the pressure finally bore fruit as Knight’s long cross from the left was headed home from almost under the bar by George BOWERMAN. The same player nearly had a second but was forced wide by the advancing keeper and had to settle for a corner that came to nothing. Totton suffered two cautions in as many minutes before levelling the scores on the brink of half time. A free kick from the left touchline was headed back across goal from the far post and forced over the line by SUTHERDEN, leaving all to depart for the half time tea with Alton no doubt wondering how they were not well in front. HT 1-1 Happily the sunshine had re-appeared and after a Knight shot was too high Totton survived a scramble in their goalmouth when Eyres palmed away a cross that he perhaps could have caught before at the other end Harry Burns was only inches too high from distance. Some childish “handbags” in the centre circle then added to the cautions when a word would have surely sufficed. Matt Graham’s cultured left foot sent Knight free on the left but for what seemed the umpteenth time there was nobody in the danger area in the middle only for Alton to then get their act in order so to speak with eighteen minutes on the clock. Graham swung a corner in from the left and the unmarked Phil MOORE’s header cleared everybody and nestled inside the post. Eyres left his area to deny Bowerman and suddenly it was all square again. There seemed little threat as the ball was worked down the right but the home defence, to a man, simply watched the ball on its way and John MacAULAY rolled it past the stranded goalkeeper. Both sides used their full quota of substitutes, though it was a surprise to see the ever dangerous Knight replaced for the home side, and Alton nearly got the goal that may well have ended proceedings when the visiting defence gave the ball away and Benham’s snap shot on the turn struck the base of the post. Well in to stoppage time it was then the Alton defence’s turn to give the ball away and Totton made them pay. McAuley made ground down the middle, his shot was blocked and Harry BURNS fired the loose ball home from fifteen yards to cue delighted blue shirted celebrations.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 35

The final whistle went immediately upon the re-start and Totton & Eling had gained three valuable points from a game that probably should have been out of their reach by halftime, But in fairness they defended stubbornly, never gave up and came very much more in to proceedings in the second half, but their tendency to surround the referee when decisions went against them was something the game could have done without. A good attendance - power to the artificial surface - and an enjoyable afternoon but sadly the usual question – why so many cautions in a game played in good spirit and without a bad challenge in sight. FT 2-3

STATEMENT FROM OUR FIXTURE SECRETARY

Each season The F.A. order the League to finish its season by the last Saturday in April (i.e. April 25th). Because of the extraordinary weather we are currently experiencing, they have given us some leeway to use the midweek following April 25th to arrange games that do not involve promotion or relegation clubs. This is by far the worst season I have experienced since we have been operating under an end of season deadline and it is going to need some flexibility and co-operation from clubs to meet this requirement. Standard Rule 8.7 states: The Board may change any Competition fixtures during the season to suit the overall interests of the Competition and shall have the power to decide whether a ground is suitable for Competition matches and to order a Club whose ground is deemed unsuitable to play its home matches at an alternative suitable ground. In the last 10 days we have taken steps to change fixtures for clubs whose games have been invariably postponed in wet weather. Most of you will be aware of this from social media comment so I am not going to elaborate but this was escalated to The F.A. who have replied that "fixture allocations are solely a matter for the League". The League will continue to seek solutions and support initiatives from clubs in order to get games played. These could include: 1. reversing fixtures to opponents’ grounds 2. using neutral venues that meet the grading criteria 3. where a ground is marginal on a Tuesday - moving fixtures to the Wednesday or Thursday if the weather is forecast to improve. As I've said, this requires a push from every club (even those well up with fixtures) to remain flexible in order to arrange a fixture programme that is reasonable. It is also going to mean some long midweek trips which are regretfully unavoidable. Thank you for your anticipated co-operation. Getting five fixtures played out of a total of 31 this week is just about as bad as it gets and will need a lot of changes to the fixture list. However the weather is not forecast to improve much this week but is supposed to be better for the following midweek. There are no changes to the coming midweek fixtures or next Saturday except for the following which clubs involved are already aware of- in the Premier, Solent University v Bashley is moved from tomorrow to Tuesday 3rd March and will be played at Bashley. Solent University v Christchurch will be played at Christchurch on Saturday 7th March. In the League Cup – the Baffins ground is to be inspected tomorrow morning and, if necessary, the League Cup tie with AFC Stoneham will be moved to Stoneham and played on Tuesday evening. The fixture list for League and League Cup between March 10th and March 12th will be added to as follows: Tuesday March 10th League Cup Quarter Final Christchurch v Bournemouth (from 25 February) Premier Division Baffins Milton Rovers v Alresford Town (from 26 February) Brockenhurst v Hamble Club (original fixture) Lymington Town v Fleet Town (from yesterday) Portland United v AFC Stoneham (from yesterday)

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 35

WEEK THIRTY-ONE ROUND UP

his must have been one of the worst weeks in the League’s history as regards fixtures with the entire midweek schedule washed out and only five games played on Saturday and two of those on artificial surfaces. The situation across the whole Country is now serious and given the awful flooding in paces

there are Leagues that surely will not be able to finish. It is difficult to see what the FA can do but it would be nice if they showed some interest or concern rather than simply barking out orders from their Ivory Towers. Back to yesterday and, as stated, just five matches completed – two in the Premier Division and three in Division One. AFC Portchester strengthened their hold on third place in the Premier with a best of seven goal victory over Solent University with seven different names on the score sheet. The game had been switched to Portchester because of the University’s on going pitch problems but the visitors made light of the change and came very close to a hard earned point. On the other side of the County there were four goals as well for Hamworthy United with Shaftesbury scoring one in reply. Cameron Munn hit a double, Eddie Hodge and Connor Cocklin for the “Hammers” with Mali Benjamin replying for the visitors as their poor away record continued. US Portsmouth increased their lead at the top of Division One with a 2-0 win at rival promotion contenders Downton with goals from Tom Cain and Andy Todd in the first half but Alton went down 3-2 at home to Totton & Eling, three valuable points for the visitors. Alton dominated the first half but failed to take advantage and goals from George Bowerman and Phil Moore were cancelled out by Joe Sutherden and John MacAulay before Harry Burns scored the winner in second half stoppage time. Lastly Ringwood produced their best home performance of the season with a 4-0 defeat of Whitchurch courtesy of two goals from Matt Casey and one apiece from Harrison Clarke and Jack Ransom. Portchester, Downton and Ringwood were quick to praise all the volunteers who helped make their games possible and the league would add its own thanks. The Fixtures Secretary has e-mailed all explaining the current position and we would be grateful if all, Clubs and League, can work together to try and resolve an increasingly difficult situation. The story is also shown in this edition of the newsletter. Enjoy the read and we’ll hopefully get back on track in the next fortnight.
