Sanskrit, Hindi and Marathi pronunciation.

The consonants are roughly the same as in English apart from those listed

below but the vowels are more tricky.

1 Vowels. The symbols ,and are used for long vowels. Long and short a

are different sounds. Longand are the short sounds lengthened.

Short ais the hardest vowel sound because it is so short. It is like theu in but

or a in local almost like saying the consonants without any vowels. Ganapati

is g-n-p-tiroughly like gunner-putty.a is never hard as in bat.

Long aas in cart, ormaster

Longas in beet. Short ias in bit.

Long as in pool.(eg Mldhra) Short uas in pull, not as fun-which is short

a, (unless you come from Yorkshire)

O is always long, as in modem, and never short as in modern.Eg. Moksha is

pronounced moke-sha, Omrhymes with home.

eis always long in Sanskrit, but can be short in Hindi and Marathi. Ekasounds

like English acre. Words ending in e are always pronounced long .

auand aiare diphthongs; auas in proud and ai as in kite.

The symbols and are used where a final o or e joins with short a at the

beginning of the next word as in sthitsi which is sthito+asi, or namaststu

which is namaste+astu, so the vowel is lengthened.

tongue curled back and and not with the English tendency to elongate the

vowel and drop the r(ie. dark being pronounced daak)

7 In Hindi and Marathi short aat the end of words and before long syllables is

dropped so Rma becomes Rm, Sulabh becomes Sulbh etc. This is notdone in Sanskrit.

This vestigial ais sometimes written as a full stop, as in sab.ko.

8 sis always unvoiced, ie. like hissand not his.

9 In Marathi j is usually pronounced more like z, so jog.wa sounds likezog.wa, andch sounds liketz.
