sws letter to bollinger

March 1, 2013 Office of the President Columbia University New York, NY Dear President Bollinger, We are gathered here today in solidarity with the Faculty House workers who are fighting for a living wage and a fair contract. For the past eleven months, Columbia negotiators have stonewalled a new, fair contract for the workers of Faculty House. Yesterday, the workers voted to authorize a strike in response to this despicable treatment. We think it is obscene that we are here in this lavish office that has authorized a multimillion dollar expansion while workers must work eighty hours a week to earn a living wage. The workers are sick of poor treatment, low wages, and stolen tips. It is a disgrace to students, workers, and faculty that such a rich university actively exploits members of its own community. We are here to tell you, President Bollinger, that as students, we refuse to support your administration’s utterly unfair treatment of the workers in this community. The student body is deeply invested in this struggle for economic justice on our campus. We have already organized a series of actions with the workers and will continue to do so until the workers receive what they deserve. As students of Columbia, we demand a meeting with you to voice our concerns about the way our university is treating the Faculty House workers. We will not tolerate exploitation in any form, especially on our own campus and in our own community. We demand that the university rectify this situation now. We look forward to your email reply by 5pm, Friday, March 8. Thank you, StudentWorker Solidarity [email protected]

Office of the PresidentColumbia UniversityNew York, NY

Dear President Bollinger,

We are gathered here today in solidarity with the Faculty House workers who are fighting for aliving wage and a fair contract. For the past eleven months, Columbia negotiators havestonewalled a new, fair contract for the workers of Faculty House. Yesterday, the workers votedto authorize a strike in response to this despicable treatment.

We think it is obscene that we are here in this lavish office that has authorized a multimilliondollar expansion while workers must work eighty hours a week to earn a living wage. Theworkers are sick of poor treatment, low wages, and stolen tips.

It is a disgrace to students, workers, and faculty that such a rich university actively exploitsmembers of its own community. We are here to tell you, President Bollinger, that as students,we refuse to support your administration’s utterly unfair treatment of the workers in thiscommunity.

The student body is deeply invested in this struggle for economic justice on our campus. Wehave already organized a series of actions with the workers and will continue to do so until theworkers receive what they deserve. As students of Columbia, we demand a meeting withyou to voice our concerns about the way our university is treating the Faculty Houseworkers.

We will not tolerate exploitation in any form, especially on our own campus and in ourown community. We demand that the university rectify this situation now.

We look forward to your email reply by 5pm, Friday, March 8.

Thank you,
