Preparation prior to e%ca'ation

*e'elop the la!out plans+ section plans of e%ca'ation and methods of construction

,dentif! and assess the plant and equipment required for the ob eg hand tools+ mechanical equipment+traffic management signage etc.

"nsure appropriate training has been pro'ided to all staff.

inimise the disruption to traffic and the general communit! b! ha'ing the materials and manpowerfor the work to be undertaken on hand or to be deli'ered as required.

"nsure that traffic management signage is a'ailable and in good condition.

"nsure adequate public protection (bunting+ barrier tape+ netting) and shoring is a'ailable where

appropriate.

"nsure that an! trench that the workers are to perform work in is of sufficient width to allow adequatesafe access and egress

0 1ccess to e%ca'ation

Every excavation and trench excavation exceeding more than 1.2m de th!

Workers must wear hard hats whilst in trench.

1ccess ladders/stairwa!s/ must be pro'ided to furnish safe access.

Workers must compl! with 2onfined pace "ntr!

3 Trench "%ca'ation

"%ca'ation e%ceeded more than 4 meters depth+

The materials used for piling+ shoring and bracing acti'ities must be well protected from falling

against to workers

The protection must be constructed in line with P" design+

,f trenching is more than 5 meters depth+ it must be done b! mechanical digger

Potholing needs to be undertaken with care and emplo!ing techniques least likel! to damage theser'ice:

5 "%ca'ation upport

8nce the e%ca'ation is completed the most appropriate method of ground support must be adopted.

horing if required shall be in accordance with Workplace afet! and 9ealth ("%ca'ation)

,t is important that the support s!stem be implemented as soon as possible.

7o person should not work alone in a trench.

1ll support s!stems should be regularl! inspected.

7o support should be remo'ed from a section of a trench where persons are working.

When using cage support s!stems a minimum of two module lengths must be used at all times.

1t no time should a person work outside of the caged area.

2ages must be installed and remo'ed from the trench+ assembled

*uring e%ca'ation the toe of the spoil heap should ne'er be less than 5 m from the edge of the trench.

,f the trench runs across sloping ground+ spoil to be put on downhill side of the e%ca'ation.

1ll pipes+ tools etc should ne'er be less than 5 m from the edge of the trench or bench and must bechocked

Trench walls and support s!stems should be frequentl! inspected b! the team leader or other competentand trained person to ensure that:

The e%ca'ating bucket is not undercutting the trench sides. supports are not being o'erstressed.

The ground is not fretting or beginning to collapse into the trench.

Tension cracks do not appear along trench top.

Trench walls do not sag under the pressure of the machiner!.

lumps are not appearing in the surface near the e%ca'ation.

"nsure worksite is safe/ secure before lea'ing.
