Safe Work Practices (SWP) Loading/Unloading/Stacking Material by Lorry or Mobile Crane

Procedures check for minimum requirements (Please tick):

Permit-to-Work Procedure in place where applicable

Logout/ Tag out System where applicable

PPE requirements

Emergency Response Plan(ERP)

Before materials are being stacked, first ensure that the ground where the materials will be placed is level and firm, strong enough to withstand the load of both stacks and machinery, be well consolidated and its stability should not be affected by weather conditions such as heavy rain. Good drainage should be provided.

Clear any obstacles or unused materials from the stacking area as they may make stacks unstable.

In an indoor environment, the maximum height of the stack should not be more than four times the

shortest width of the materials ( i.e. a ratio of 4:1)

For outside environment, the ration should be reduced to 3:1.

Before un stacking, examine the stack for signs of instability or faults

Stack should not lean against or be supported by other stacks

Take steps to exclude people from all areas at risk from falling material

Arrange storage areas to give good visibility for pedestrians and vehicles.

Stacks of materials should not be placed too close to each other. Allow a distance between them for

safe retrieval.

Pedestrians should use designated walkways, segregated from vehicles where possible, and be

excluded from active stacking areas. Stacking areas should have adequate lighting

Drive your truck at a safe and reasonable speed (10kph). Take special care driving on wet or oily

surfaces and/or in congested areas.

Roadways or aisles should be clearly defined and strong enough to withstand the weight of loaded

vehicles.

Stack condition should be regularly monitored by adequately trained staff who can identify stack faults

Helmets, gloves and safety footwear will normally be required to protect employees, as well as

appreciate clothing for outside working.

High visibility clothing is required where there are frequent vehicle movements

During transportation or movement of materials, etc. it is essential that the overall height should not

exceed 1.2m (or above the eye level of the one pushing the materials, whichever is more applicable for

a clear view of the direction of travel.

Always give way to others and do not sound the horn unnecessarily except to warn others of the

approaching traffic, and at exits and turning corners. Ensure that your path of travel is kept clear.

Slow down and stop when approaching blind corners or doorways. Go head only when the way is clear.

Ensure that the overhead or height clearances are sufficient.

When driving, keep the forks at about 5 inches above the ground. Never overload a material handling

equipment – know its safe working load.

Never use a material handling equipment as a vertical access for personnel. It should not be used to

carry passengers either.

Material-handling equipment should not be parked along passageways or near exits. They should not

be left unattended without neutralising the controls, setting the brakes, shutting off the power,

removing the ignition key, and lowering the forks to its lowest possible position.

Only authorised personnel are allowed to operate material-handling equipment.

Before operating any material-handling equipment, check:

Overhead guard is in-place to protect operator from falling objects Forks are properly secured and aligned Tyres have correct pressure, threaded, and in good serviceable condition Steering wheel has correct control over the direction of travel Ensure battery water is at the correct level Effective brake and lift controls Effective horn and flashing (warning) beacon Report any defects to your supervisor immediately. Do not use the equipment until the

defects have been rectified.

Lifting Supervisor to inspect all lifting gear prior to slinging on to the lifting blocks and hooks.

Briefing by safety supervisor to all personnel involved on the sequence of activity.

Loading and unloading equipment by lorry crane or mobile crane.

Remove all loose items on top the machinery before hoisting

Attached tag line to loads before commence of lifting.

Lifting operations are not to be carried out during adverse weather.

Position, fasten and install all lifting gear at designated positions by riggers.

All personnel must be cleared from the top of the load prior to lifting.

No personnel must be under the suspended load or within the vicinity during hoisting.

Barricaded area of operation with warning sign.

Lorry crane or mobile crane to minimize lifting eccentricity and coordinate movement of rigger and

maintain signaller visual path with lorry crane operator.

Avoid hasty movement to minimize accident.

Position load over the designated position and lowered it.
