Strengths• “green” campus: fac/stu/staff have buy-in of cause. • A lot of space: 319 acres, close w/ HSMC• Eco-reps, Seac, SGA, SMPs (good student groups to help) • Location adds to awareness, urgency. • Good green publicity: and we create more. Growing part of our image! • We have some renewable.• We’re actively working on a sundry of projects. • Sustainability in general is now going to be in our Strategic Plans• We have a track record of energy savings in new buildings: skilled staff. • We did a SWOT. _____________________________________Personal strengths- we’re all dedicated to this…”yay”- age: it’s our issue. You have more time. - Optimists at heart! Woo! - Old people don’t party as much… joie de vive. - Easy to talk to others, build movement and momentum on student level. - Leaders to some extent, and really good PR face.
Weaknessess• We’re broke: - technology is expensive. - are we willing to spend what little we have on energy projects/new programs.?Not a #1 priority: we’re focused on education/affordability. -Culture of excess and waste. -Lack of motivation; we only have 6-10 here. NO STAFF/FACULTY!!! - No institutional sustainability frame. - We have to redo heat/cool, but we cant even keep our community comfortable. ______________________________________________- We’re all really busy. - We don’t have much technical knowledge!- We don’t have direct access to sustainability-knowledge. - We’re all young, not-established, not in power. -
Opportunities• HSMC connection• Small population- its easy to adapt.• SOMEONE (or more) HERE WILL BE THE NEW STUDENT TRUSTEE!
Seriously. Do it. NOW! • Our opportunity to redefine identity. • On the water (renewable location for geothermal/tide/wind/solar) • We could make new jobs (like in a farm) or credit opportunities for
projects. • Site for new projects (private funded) • Much of campus needs renovating soon • Alumni connections: Solar-Tech/ VP of BP solar, all our wicked
activists. MAT• Behavioral changes: (like laundry racks); we are personally
responsible so we can make a big change.
Threats
• Time! We have little time to act… and we’re on a deadline (may 15th)
• State could take a lot more money back. • Potential new president and administration
could be lax on this issue.. • Strategic Plan• Potential backlash from a strained community.
